Dungeons of Chaos is just awesome and has zero microtransactions. Dozens of hours of fun rpg content. It plays a lot like Divinity. If you're a fan of rpg's, you cannot go wrong with this game.
Looks like my kind of game. Congratulations on your success. I didn't think there would be a market place for this type of game anymore.
Here is a link to the Android store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Prometheus_Indie_RPG_Games.Dungeons_of_Chaos_UNITY_edition
Worse than Gurk?? Lol, just kidding. Dungeons of Chaos starts in a cave and there's some rats soon after, and there was spiders in a forest and a desert somewhere as well.
Heroes of Steel starts in a jail in a cave too.
Are you looking at the God Mode Edition?
If so, don't - that's very expensive as it is essentially a way of supporting the devleoper for God mode etc.
The actual original version is this one, and it's much cheaper!
It used to be called Dungeons of Chaos UNITY because of an app store update issue, but it looks like he dropped the UNITY part.
Dungeons of chaos. Party based old-school rpg. Maybe a bit simple in terms of story/dialogue but otherwise nice. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Prometheus_Indie_RPG_Games.Dungeons_of_Chaos_UNITY_edition
I liked very much Dungeons of Chaos. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Prometheus_Indie_RPG_Games.Dungeons_of_Chaos_UNITY_edition It's has similar vibe to Spiderweb Software games when it comes to world exploration and graphics
This is the exact type of game I was searching for. I'm glad you made this thread.
I noticed you said it can be roguelike, action rpg, or rpg. If you are open to mobile games, give Dungeons of Chaos a try. It's the reason I'm searching for these types of games right now. It's a RPG that has rogue-like elements (can't grind in chapter 1, experience penalties upon death), but plays like a tactical turn based RPG. Chapter 2 opens the world up and you can grind if you so wish. Huge world to explore, developer's very active on facebook and open to feedback, procedurally generated items with thousands of possible combinations, no legendary items as of today. There are shops but even shop inventories are randomly generated and take in game time to restock. Thing to keep in mind is it's still a work in progress. The developer's been working on it for years, but there are still a LOT of features that are to be added, including chapter 3 and the conclusion of the story.
Dungeons of Chaos (an amazing retro style RPG, with a TON of depth) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Prometheus_Indie_RPG_Games.Dungeons_of_Chaos_UNITY_edition
PUBG Mobile (increadible gameplay, graphics, controls and smooth servers) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tencent.ig
The Battle of Polytopia (Amazing game play, cute graphics, a simplified Civilization) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.midjiwan.polytopia
Hearthstone (I only played it a bit, but when I did it sucked me in for a good couple days) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone
Retroarch (because console classics are wayy more solid than playstore games) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retroarch
I think there is definitely a huge structural issue. First is that the vast amount of devs and games means that you would need to spend advertising / marketing dollars to be noticed, and then of course you are all competing for a fixed pool of spend that gamers have. And there big companies go hard after the main audiences' money. So it is about the worst competition you can expose yourself to. But at the same time, there is definitely money there for niche players.
I am a finance professional by trade so when I launched my indie game (spent many years building it in my spare time) I was taking a closer look at my options, and decided to go all in and did some costly but targeted Facebook ads. Ended up reaching the audience I wanted and because it is a niche retro feel game I made good sales so far. But after store cut and ad spend, it is not enough to support a family.
But nevertheless I just decided to take a career break (starting last week) and focus on gamedev for a year, because it is just so much more enjoyable compared to an office job and a long commute. But very conscious that an indie dev life is quite unpredictable financially, you are basically up against global competition, and all the pitfalls of having a creative/artistic, project based job.
My tips for anyone considering an indie dev career (by which I mean alone or really small team), would be to make a game you love playing yourself. Don't make a game trying to get rich. And use an engine you can release to many platforms from. The platforms are diverse but with the right engine you maximise your customer base.
For anyone interested, this is it:

Also on steam greenlight for PC port (fans told me there is a huge retro RPG fanbase via steam, just need to make sure his is not perceived as a simple mobile port):

My game DUNGEONS OF CHAOS was inspired by Zangband, I tried to have a static overworld and storyline and now the roguelike elements are probably not dominant at all any more. But should still be good fun for roguelike fans. If you want, PM me and I send you a promo code.
Background: been chipping away as a hobby on this game for almost two decades. Released in its true glory June last year. 4.8 star rating, 20,000 fans and happy so far with the reception. Currently working on expansion with ETA late April if all goes well.
