Try E:D Miner Tool if you have an Android phone. You can input the system you're currently in and it will tell you what the closest system with a pristine metallic site is.
1) Yes it is though you may have to commit to a couple of sessions of venturing out and back to, let's say, get your name on some star and/or make a worthwhile amount of money
2) You can also get interdicted by enemies in your power's space :) but i'm not even sure i get interdicted more often than before or that it's just that now, whenever the game decides that it's time for an interdiction, there's a chance that it's not a pirate but an enemy (same sh*t different name)

4) Trade rank is determined solely by the amount of money earned from trading. Until you can make tons of profit with the sheer amount of cargo space of some bigger ships, rares hauling is quite profitable
5) no downside
6) find a metallic ring with pristine reserves, this app may help (no idea why it's a mobile app but whatever). RES generate better resources but in the long run having to deal with the pirates there is generally not worth it (i have ever only mined just for fun without looking for specific resources though)
There is This App that you can get (IDK if it's on the apple store) You put in your current system and it gives you a list of systems with pristine metallic rings in order of distance from you. Super useful for both new and veteran miners.

Android app for finding the nearest pristine metallic rings system, works very well but my need an update.

If you look on the system map for the ringed planets info it will tell you the level of reserves. If you have an Android phone there are also a few apps that will tell you the location of the nearest according to your current location.

There is an app you can get on Android, called ED Miner
It basically has a listing of all known pristine rings in the bubble and if you enter your current location it will list them based upon their distance from you.
The best advice I can give you is get that app, and then check with the galaxy map in game until you find a match.

I've just got my first ever painite and palladium :) bring on the BIG MONEY!! and bring on the type 7 in a week or two :) also i highly recommend this subreddit if you havent been there https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteMiners/
If you have an android phone, this app might help (haven't got a chance to verify it yet, but the reviews are good).
Even the wiki does a fairly poor job of explaining a lot of game mechanics (while the game itself often explains nothing at all).
