Finally a test of the two apps I had downloaded, eQuake and Earthquake Network Pro. I had been leaning towards eQuake cause it seems like there are more users... Nope! The only one that alerted was Earthquake Network. It was so close it couldn't give advance notice, but it went off within seconds and eQuake didn't pick up a damn thing.
Edit: Link to the one that worked (non-pro version, I have the pro but it probably works the same) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.finazzi.distquake
If you have a smartphone, have a look at this app which sometimes gives you early warnings, and in any case lets you talk to other people who were involved, and can automatically send emails and SMS with your location to predefined contacts in case you're in trouble.
Maybe also follow my https://twitter.com/BrainstormBot since it's back working now, and could also give you some warnings (less likely).
Yo en stgo.
Sismo detector me avisó unos segundos antes.
Here is the app I have been using. It turns cellphones into earthquake detectors. If enough start shaking in the same way, it sends alerts.

All you can do is be prepared. Have a emergency kit ready, make sure nothing in your house can fall on your head. Buy earthquake insurance, its a seperate policy from your renters insurance. Hope your not in a place that crumbles when it hits.....
As far as getting to where the quakes are no big deal, you just have to feel a lot of them. I just got back from Mexico and in 1 month I felt 4 quakes. You get a little used to it, if its mild, its when its 'different' that its scary.
Like the last one we had here a couple months ago.....lasted a long time and was scary because it kept going on, and leaves you wondering if its going to get worse.
I found this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.finazzi.distquake&hl=en_US
and its been very useful.
It actually works sometimes as an pre alert! The biggest earthquake I felt in Mexico, this app sent me a warning before we felt it! (Only 8 seconds, but still amazing to know this tech is out there....)
The same app also has a twitter, and they do make it for IOS.
Be careful guys. It feels silly to get under a table but it has actually saved lives. I suggest getting this app if you have Android — I'm not affiliated with it and, if anything, my bot that posts here and on Twitter is competing with that app, but honestly it just works better if it has enough coverage, and seeing some of the felt reports in Puerto Rico, I think it does have enough coverage.
It gives you at last a chance, though obviously no guarantee, of receiving a warning before the shaking starts. My bot, on the other hand, can do that maybe only 5% of the time (look at the times above: earthquake started at 12:54:45, my bot warned at 12:55:58, that's quick but still more than a minute, and there's no chance it comes before the shaking even if you're way off the epicenter). 10 seconds can be enough to shut off the gas, open doorways so they don't get stuck, and then hide under a table. Look for videos of the Japanese early warning systems made by NHK on YouTube to see what you can do in about 10 seconds.
My phone alerted me with the earthquake warning app because it was relatively close, but I didn't feel it in Irvine.
There are few alert apps on play store which ring an alarm. Not sure if they will work properly in India:

I don't know that one, but there are many applications on Play that simply notify on events reported by one or more agencies like USGS or EMSC. Brainstorm wants to be different in that it tries to aggregate as many of those sources as possible, and also to warn in advance based on people tweeting when it can.
There are only a few apps around that alert in a similar "crowdsourced" way. I know of:
Some experimental apps have a similar end goal, but for now they only gather data without actually relaying notifications to users, while they "tune" the system:
Then there are some early warning apps for countries where an official early warning system is in place, which can work faster than the crowdsourced version if it's implemented well:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.finazzi.distquake
https://apps.apple.com/do/app/sismo-detector/id1449893235
I have this app. It woke me up before we felt the shakes. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.finazzi.distquake

>
> Image
>

It's called Earthquake Network - Real time alerts. I'm on Android, so here's the link to that. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.finazzi.distquake
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.finazzi.distquake: "Contains Ads·Offers in-app purchases"
Really? In-app purchases I'd understand for donations to the network, but ads? Wow.
