My MVNO disallows tethering unless you pay extra (only on Verizon). I use EasyTether ($10) which leverages android's ADB interface for tethering.
I started out using USB tethering, then got bluetooth tethering working. Theoretically it's slower but I only bought 1mps mobile data anyhow. And BT allows me to put the phone whereever in the van it gets best reception. Right now I am in Organ Mountains - Desert Peaks national monument using the laptop at the galley. The phone is several feet away in the window where it got more bars.
Next step would be to get a BT dongle for the glinet router and tether to that so it can repeat over wifi to other devices.
I use EasyTether. Seems to do the trick, though you have to be a bit more thorough to fool T-Mobile. If you want to be as tinfoil hat safe as possible though, you want to root your phone and edit build.prop above all else.
Could try this: http://developer.samsung.com/galaxy/others/android-usb-driver-for-windows
Even better:
Step 1: Remove tethering from your bill and save like $20 a month
Step 2: Still keep on tetherin' using this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mstream.etpc&hl=en 8-) I am pwning AT&T hardcore by pairing it with my unlimited data plan. :B
You might try something like EasyTether Pro: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mstream.etpc&hl=en
It was free on the Amazon Appstore a few weeks back. It uses Bluetooth, so the speed may be limited a bit, but it does work.
FWIW, I was trying to avoid rooting just as you, but ended up doing it anyway, modifying the build.prop, then disabling root (had to in order to get past employers MDM).
If you have and android you can just use EasyTether pro and get unlimited full speed hotspot

I think this is the app I used.
