Fongo is free and has worked well for me in the past. You get your own Canadian number so choose an area code that is a free call for your parents so they can call you toll free.
It's a hardware limitation/issue.
This particular variant of the S7 will only connect to AWS-1 (Band 4
) FDD-LTE [and MBS (Band 41
) TDD-LTE in the future] for data on Freedom Mobile, so it works, however as mentioned above, it will not be able to make voice calls through the phone dialer.
One could use a VoIP application like fongo to get around this limitation.
I used to use Telus for the first 4 years I was here and I now use WIND. I'm pretty happy with it. ITB had meh coverage for Telus and Wind, but most of my communication is from data/wifi anyways. If you need to use text/calling services a lot in low connectivity areas, get the free Fongo app. They give you a free number that you can send/receive calls.
I even live in a basement and the service isn't that bad. It might also depend on how new your phone is. I have found that service is pretty bad in downtown Toronto or in concrete buildings.
Fongo allows you to port your existing cell phone number to them and call/text from that number using their app.
Fongo, when i used them 2 years ago, they gave me a kitchener number, and you could receive calls on it too https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fongo.dellvoice&hl=en
