I struggle with math quite a bit and I've found this useful. Hopefully you're an android user.

You can also convert fractions to decimals by dividing top number by bottom, so 1/2 means 1 ÷ 2 = .5.
If counting inches, you can try using the bones between knuckles on your fingers when they're bent (there's 12, finger tip, middle, and the bone that connects to palm x 4).
Fraction Calculator plus. Very easy and useful for doing math for measurements using fractions of inches so you don't have to try and convert from decimal to fraction in your head.
Not an electrician's app per se but it has use for us Fraction Calculator Plus. (pretty sure there's an iPhone version too)
It's a calculator app with a UI designed specifically for fraction math and it does exactly what it says on the tin
I measure stuff all day long and this helps me figure out center much faster than using my dumb brain.
It makes fraction math like 4^7/16 + 32^3/4 + 15^5/8 super easy and is way faster than I can do it in my head.
(52^13/16 or 52.8125, BTW)
I use the Fraction Calculator app so I don't have to jump back and forth.

To answer your question directly not all numbers translate well to a fraction that is convenient to woodworking. For example say the result ends up at 3/57, how does that help if your tape goes to 1/32's? If wanting to do what you mentioned your best bet is to reference a conversion chart to get as close as you can.
Fraction Calculator Plus 2 3/16 - 1 5/8 = 9/16 easy, peasy, freesy.
To explain it to the school ... it's called dyscalculia and it's a genuine brain wiring thing, much like dyslexia. They MUST accommodate your problem, and the easiest way is to have you use a calculator or math software.

Math apps can do it for you. You aren't taking math classes, you are taking woodworking classes.

If you use metric you can use centimetres, millimetres and tenths of millimetres. Way easier than the USA's barbaric fractions.
The tip he gave is awesome, but there are still many times you'll need to figure out more complex measurements and the FractionalPlus App is a life saver!

I'm good at math and still use a calculator. I actually use a fraction calculator.
I'm a pro and just use this if I need to be exact. My trade 1/4"-1" tolerance is fine.
