I'm an Android user, and i'm using it right now: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
When you cover you proximity sensor it makes your screen turn off. It saves battery and prevent random touches in your screen. Works like a charm. BTW, don't pay attention to the purchasable features.
I'm still so embarrassed by it..
So I created an app to save battery while playing pokemon go. Some sites started noticing it and created posts about it. Then yesterday I've submitted an update and a few hours later the app got suspended and removed because of an easter egg I added when I started the development that showed a dick butt for users that had an ad blocker active (myself included). Now I had to submit the app with a different listing and lost all the users and ratings. FML
this is the app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
I've been using Go Extender for weeks: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
It turns the screen black when upside down and prevents unwanted touches. It also turns off the backlight when in your pocket (proximity sensor). Works great! I find the game's battery saver mode started causing bugs around 2 weeks after launch so I never have it enabled anymore.
For anyone interested, I also thought the built in battery saver was a little lacking so I created an app to enhance it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
This uses the proximity sensor and disables screen touches. It also keeps the screen on so the screen does not timeout if you don't interact for a few seconds. Try it and give me some feedback!
I've heard a lot of suggestions and tried most. Proximity and pokelock are popular suggestions.
I currently use GO Extender.
Saves battery. Blacks and blocks screen interaction when upside down. If light sensor is blocked when upright, does the same (So if you accidentally put it in pocket when upright) And it leaves GPS active when PoGo is blacked out, so you still get distance travelled.

GO Extender works much better than the native battery saver more and gives you more features to control.
I've used a third party overlay (Go Extender, although I'm sure others work just as well) instead of the internal battery saver basically since I started playing the game. In addition to working properly, it keeps the screen lock from kicking in while you play, and protects you from accidentally pressing soft buttons on your screen while the overlay is active.
I've been using go extender since shortly after the game came out on my s7 edge. Works great, and the unpaid version does everything I need.
No root needed. I'm on stock 6.0.1. If you're into other pogo apps try GO Extender. Turns your screen off but keeps Pokemon GO active. Saves a grip of battery. Also no root. Play Store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
Or you can use GO Extender to either dim the screen or actually close it via proximity sensor (if your device supports it) while keeping the game running. It only does so when playing pokemon go.

> the battery saver goes a bit funny at times
I really like this app as a replacement for the built-in battery saver mode.
If you're on android, I'm using the Go Extender, basically when the proximity sensor detects something it turns off the screen. I keep my phone in my pocket while out on walks and I've noticed a big difference on battery usage. Maybe it'll help you
I didn't even know they fixed the 2016 behavior. I've been using Go Extender to resolve this.

I don't know if you have android or iOS, but for android there is Go Extender:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi&hl=en
I have used this app pretty much since it got released. When set, you can hold your phone up side down to make the screen black, and proximity sensor will disable the screen when in your pants, even though the app is still running. Saves a lot of power compared to screen on.
I have several things in place to help prevent battery drain.
As others said, lower brightness as much as possible.
I have also lowered my screen res to lower the processor use (no root):
https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemongodev/comments/6554k1/tutorial_set_your_android_phone_to_a_lower/
I have also installed Go extender, this will keep your screen on while actively playing, but dim/turn off the screen when holding up side down or triggered by the proximity sensor. (free for 5 days)

Just for clarification, this reads your activity to check for pogo active, it does not require your account or anything.
I use an APP for a long time i found very useful. Among other things, it turns off the screen everytime the proximity sensor is activated.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
Try Go Extender. It keeps your phone awake when playing PoGo, turns off the screen when you put it in your pocket and blocks screen touches. That couples with the game's Battery Save feature increased my game time per battery charge by 1 hour (from 3.5h to 4.5h) on a Nexus 5X.
iPhone.. that's your first mistake. You can stop this with an android app that stops screen touches when the proximity sensor is blocked but still allows you to hatch eggs etc..
Edit : seems like a lot of you have done the same thing. Here is the app >>> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
No, it dims your screen and shifts the color to something more orange/red so it's easier on the eyes.
I suggest f.lux for this purpose though (if your phone is rooted) since it will turn off if such a screen (where you have to click install) is detected.
There is an app which does what you described as "awesome" called Go Extender. It detects when your phone is in your pocket or just upside down (can be configured to your liking) and then turns off the screen while the game is still running.
Hope that answered your questions ;)
I was having this issue with my htc one m8, but then I saw an app called "go extender" on reddit, which seems to work well so far.
Basically, it does what power saver mode does, but I haven't found any bugs with it so far - the app turns off the screen when the proximity sensor is covered or the phone is pointed down. Not sure if the app works on your droid, but it's worth a look.
Here's the link, sorry I'm on mobile so I can't make it neat:
Edit: To clarify, I'm not the creator of the app, I'm just trying to help you find a solution to your problem. It might help.
Any chance you could provide a non play link while it's restored please? Will happily download via play and donate once it's back up.
Edit - this should have been in reply to /u/asdtfdr
Edit 2 - here it is haha https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
It turns off the screen when the phone is upside down, or when the sensor is covered, but the game stays active, and it keeps the screen on while in game, so you don't have to use special settings, or keep tapping the screen every thirty second to keep it awake.
you can check it out here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
It's here now: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
It was suspended and I had to upload a new compliant version as a new app (in the meantime the other was reinstated but now I'll just use the new one and remove the other).
Sounds like your phone doesn't have a gyroscope (Moto X Play, for instance). In that case, use the app "GO Extender" and it'll use the proximity sensor to do a similar thing.
My Galaxy S7 does work with the battery saver option (I can orient the phone upside down and the screen goes dark), but I still use the GO Extender app as it's more reliable (doesn't cause the game to stop recognizing taps like the default battery saver sometimes does)

I just use this app. It does everything you want.
Not Tasker, but this app will do what you're looking for. Go Extender
GO extender fixes that problem https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
If you use Android, you can try this app. Works for me.
Maybe try this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
I've made this app that uses the accelerometer and proximity sensor to disable the screen in PoGO. Try it and see if it works: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
Found it : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi&hl=en
I don't even need Wakey anymore, thank you !
Hi, dev here. I had a stupid problemwith that app and google got it suspended. New compliant app is already available: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
This might work for you: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi&hl=en
Viva, sim foi suspensa mas entretanto já resolvi o problema e está disponível aqui: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
I have that a little, but go extender really kept it down. So happy with that app! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
Keeps the screen on but puts a black overlay on it to reduce battery use and avoid screen burn.

Not sure if there is an iOS equivalent, but this helps I've found:

Try the Android app GO Extender, it turns the screen off when the phone points down or when the proximity sensor is activated. Not only it should save more battery but is also avoids accidental clicks while the phone is in your pocket.
It's free to use for 5 days only though, then it should cost around 2 bucks iirc :(
There's no need to use developer options. Install this app, Go Extender, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dferreira.gopikapi
I've been using it while running/walking for a week or so and it works perfectly. It will keep your screen on when PokemonGo is running, and will turn off the screen if the phone is upside down or sitting face down on a table, all while keeping PokemonGo running. Seems like exactly what you want to hatch eggs at night.
