(shameless plug) I didn't have a smartphone when Latitude was available, so I'm not sure if it's exactly the same, but I needed a location sharing app, so I made one: Graticule
Graticule -- simple location sharing app
Features:
Uses:
You can see how the tracking page looks like on the homepage: https://graticule.link
Graticule - You can start a location beacon and send the link to someone. Quite handy to notify your family or friends for ETA.
Shameless plug: I actually made Graticule for easy real-time location sharing because G+ was too much of a hassle.
You just install the app, start the beacon and share the link.
You can also choose if you want gps location or if network location is good enough.
The tracking webpage is device independent, see example on the Graticule website
I've had similar concerns when motorcycling/xc paragliding/offroading, but I can't afford a SPOT tracker and some negative reviews online didn't convince me that it works 100% all the time.
Shameless plug: So I made a free Android app called Graticule that is fit for this purpose.
You set it to send your location as often as you like (less often means less battery used), using either GPS (good for outside the city) or network triangulation (good for inside the city) to a private tracking page.
You can then send that private tracking page to anyone you want, and they can view it on any recent browser (no old Internet Explorer support, sorry), they don't need to have an app installed.
Now, granted you need to have enough signal for a data connection to send the beacon, but lacking anything else, your last known location is going to be a lot more useful than nothing at all.
EDIT: You can see what the tracking page looks like on the main page: https://graticule.link/
Graticule works well for android. It's really simple and sends your position data to a website. You can share it with a link from the app. The web-interface works well with mobile and desktop browsers. Beacon interval can be set in the app from 1s to almost unlimited so that it doesn't drain the battery too fast.

Graticule - you start your location tracking, there will be a link, that can be shared over sms/im. The link can be opened in any browser.
Is wifi an option ? like you have a hotspot running in your main phone to which this phone connects.
If that's possible try Graticule. You can specify the duration it streams your location too.
Graticule - location sharing app
SMS for Nexus 7 - SMS app for Nexus 7 tablets (because SMS was blocked at the OS level on this device until Android Marshmallow)
And another utility app that I won't link because it only makes sense in Romania.
"The tracklog is NOT saved in this free version, just the last beacon!
You need to get the PRO version if you need the whole tracklog."
This feature I assume was removed and it is still mentioned on the Google Play link.

>How do you choose your destination? A hill station / Beach / historical lover?
Depends on mood, money, time and what I like.
>Any tips for first time traveller
Don't trust anybody. Always negotiate. Keep your family or friend in loop, so if things are starting to go bad they know where you are. Like use graticule app to share your location.
Graticule, i actually think it was created by som guy from this forum, since this is where i learned about it originally. :-) it works by sending a link to whom ever you wish over text message / email, then the receiver can live track you through a web site. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.emilburzo.graticule
try Graticule. Very easy on battery. Read the description for features and how to use.
Graticule. Uses next to no battery and data.
Graticule: privacy conscious real time location sharing app
I use an app called graticule for this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.emilburzo.graticule
How it fares against graticule ?
$ find . -name build.gradle -exec grep minSdk {} \; minSdkVersion 10 minSdkVersion 19 minSdkVersion 8
Depends on the purpose of the app, really.
