Me and my dad climbed it yesterday, the road has been closed all week except for cyclists so there's been a tonne of people on it.
https://www.strava.com/activities/351501477
It's actually a super nice climb. It's steep, but it's not that long.
Jesus christ, can i send you a baby seat? free of charge? I have two extras sitting right in front of me. they look like this - https://www.amazon.com/iBert-Child-Bicycle-Safe-T-Seat-Red/dp/B01DQM0KEE/
dead ass tho man, i wear fuck this is a long url gloves from Mechanix Wear and they are great for riding and working on stuff with. bike gloves suck imo compared to these
I went in-depth about this in the second video in the article. They cut most of it out for broadcast requirements. I'm really just happy that something good came out of it. I know we're used to being treated as second-class citizens (don't read the Facebook comments that article is attached to, trust me) but sometimes we can win. Even the little victories like this matter.
I'm a bit concerned that they still want us to ride over to the right as far as possible, but if they're not going to harass me for riding legally, then what they want will probably not be what they end up getting.
Wear a camera. You never know when it will help you. The one I use is a Contour ROAM 3 from Amazon and a vented helmet mount for like $15. This investment has been worth every penny.
That's life. Want to trade? This is mine.

I work as a bank manager. No shower so I do a sink shower after and wear a suit at work. I don't do it daily but when I do, it makes my day 1000x better.
It gets better. I commuted 15k each way for years. The first few it takes a bit to get the routine down. It took you an hour so 2 hours both ways. That's your workout done for the day too AND your commute. You often can save time when you you remember you are effectively multitasking.
Get yourself a hydration pack with a 2-litre water-bladder (or two) , pull the bladder out, fill it 2/3 full, and put in the freezer flat the night before your ride.
You now have a long ice cube pack that cools your back, while it slowly melts during the day, providing you with ice-cold water all day.
A few dollars more gets you a pack than carry your pump, patches, tube, and tools; as well as your a snack, phone, etc.
Once they're available on the redditgifts.com we'll make sure to post it to /r/bicycling (either sticky and/or on the sidebar) and announce it on the Reddit Jersey Google Group.
Stop using that cable lock now. Get yourself a quality dual-shackle u-lock. Do not lock the bike up anywhere with that cable lock. USe it for your wheels only!
Just fyi: N=N++; has no effect on N's value
N++ will increment N by 1, but it evaluates to N's original value, so N will be set back to what it was. You could do N=++N; but the best way would just be N++;

Oh boy, am I going to be downvoted to oblivion with that. But I've some comment karma to spare:
Study from the university of Bath, UK
>(..) Dr Walker used a bike fitted with a computer and an ultrasonic distance sensor to find drivers were twice as likely to get close to the bicycle, at an average of 8.5cm, when he wore a helmet. >(..)The experiment, which recorded 2,500 overtaking motorists in Salisbury and Bristol, was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Of course, that is only the tip of the iceberg, because the study measured only one metric (passing distance). Since wearing helmets influences car drivers, which other driving parameters are also affected ?
This is my own opinion and I don't want to convince anyone, but I'm not very comfortable with the concept of increasing the risk of accident for the sake of diminishing the risk of injury when it happens.
The process is pretty simple: lace the hub and rim together with the spokes and nipples, and then gradually tighten the spokes in a way that keeps the wheel round and true. Like many skills, the process is simple, but it takes a while to do it right.
Tools are fairly simple too. A truing stand helps, but is not necessary, and you can get inexpensive ones. What you need is good instructions (Sheldon Brown or Jobst Brandt are the gurus I use), the correct parts, a decent spoke wrench, a dishing tool, and a lot of patience. The truing stand and dishing tool can be improvised. I also bought a tensiometer, but that is not required either.
In my opinion, wheel building is one of the most satisfying part of building a bike from scratch.

A huge amount of thanks go out to everyone who has helped us make this possible so far. My friends in Boston held a benefit at Goody Glover's Irish Pub in the North End that raised $10,000 in one night! And thanks to Steve Strickland and the amazing staff at Bent's Cycling in Lakeland, FL for taking time out of their very busy holiday shopping schedule to help us make sure we got the right size bikes and helmets for all the kids. Buy local!
Cordless grinders keep getting smaller. Something like this nearly hides in your hand: https://www.amazon.com/BOSCH-GWS10-8-76V-EC-professional-compact-grinders/dp/B01JMDZ0Y6. Cordless Dremels are smaller, but not up for the task of cutting a bike lock.
This is an easy way to steal a bike and will probably happen more often as cordless grinders come down in price. Usually there are no consequences if a thief gets noticed, they just run off and try again on another bike a few blocks away.
What I've always found beautiful about cycling is that it's such an elegant mesh of man and machine. But Robert M. Pirsig says it much better than I can:
“In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame.
On a cycle the frame is gone. You're completely in contact with it all. You're in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming.”

If you’re gonna ride it as transportation and lock it up outside, just get a beater bike. Cheap off Craigslist, nothing fancy.

It has a great route mapper too, so you can find good routes to give you a slight boost in distance when you want it.
Hey I shot this! It was on a morning commute in East London about a year and a half ago. For a few seconds I thought I had filmed someone's grisly death. Guh. Not sure how clear it is at the end but his front wheel was run over by the bus and bent into a 90 degree angle. You can see him throw it down against the building at the end. May be easier to see here.

As a motorcycle racer, we pay a lot of attention to track temps b/c we get different tires depending on the heat. I have my IR surface temp thermometer for reading tire and track temperatures
I meant once you get into the meat of the climb. You think anyone sustains their carried speed for more than 20-30 vertical feet of what's shown in the picture?
Using mgh = 0.5m v^2, someone hitting the base of a climb at 23mph will have all of that kinetic energy tapped in the first vertical 15ft of the climb.
This is a climb I did today on single speed: https://www.strava.com/segments/10949735 hit it at 130rpm and ground down to 50rpm by the time I was half way up. And this was a mere 40 vertical ft.
If you want maps with more detail for cycling I recommend Open Street Maps. It has a cycle view with trails and hidden paths that don't appear on Google. It's also kept more up to date. There are phone apps that use OSM like Komoot.

Emma isn't a real person, stop getting upset about Emma.
If you think this was the best and only way to market e-bikes to women then I don't know what you want me to say. It clearly wasn't.
Also, you are kind've sticking your head in the sand if you think Emma is a real person.
Because studies exist which suggest that the more common type of brain injury from cycling is due to rotational torsion, which helmets increase by increasing the width of the head, therefore adding leverage to blow. While the blunt-trauma injuries which helmets protect against are both less likely to occur and less likely to be survivable with-or-without a helmet at the crash energies that cyclists usually encounter.

It was awesome.
Originally my plan was to drive through a tunnel that leads back to the Golden Gate Bridge. Turns out that the tunnel was closed at 7:00 PM for construction, so the second big climb on the chart is me getting back to a road I came in on.
Here's a pic I took of the westbound descent from Hawk Hill in the Marin Headlands going towards Point Bonita. Riding down this hill felt like being dropped out of an airplane and riding on the wings of angels. It was one of the most exhilarating experiences I've ever had in my life, and I'm over 50 years old.
Biking is about 30 calories per mile IIRC. A McDonalds cheeseburger costs $1 and has 300 calories, or about $0.10 per mile. Pasta is $3.88 for 6720 calories, or $0.017 per mile.
Gas is about $2.15 right now. With a 45 MPG hybrid, that's $0.0478 per mile. With a 20 MPG SUV, it's $0.108.
lol, that elevation gain. I've done this ride a few times and it's pretty incredible, especially the downhill ;)

For anyone interested, I was able to keep the cost super low for three main reasons:
Microshift brifters. 3x7 set was $55.00 on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/microSHIFT-Shifters-SB-R473-Derailleur-Bicycle/dp/B011IL1EP4
Lucky enough to have a bike co-op in my town - sold me the handlebars and stem for $15.
Lucked out on my first craigslist bike (1992 Diamondback Override for $40), which I purchased with very little research or knowledge at the time. After I decided to go ahead with the conversion against the advice of most of the internet, I read everything Sheldon Brown has written about cable pull. Turned out I had no compatibility issues going from mountain brakes/shifters to road brifters since I have cantilever brakes. Had I wound up with a different bike it could have been a different story. Also was able to keep original derailleurs.

Trek makes some damn good bikes. I have a 2020 Domane SL7 with the Ultegra Di2. I've put prob 3000 miles on it so far and it still looks like the day I got it. I used a frame protection kit to prevent chipping. Also I would highly recoomend a chain catcher because if the chain drops off that small ring it will eat the carbon and it's not covered by trek if that happens. I have this one its a good $40 piece of mind: https://www.amazon.com/K-Edge-Pro-Chain-Catcher-Black/dp/B009UF8NEQ/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=chain+catcher+k+pro&qid=1626039545&sr=8-2
Wd40 should not be treated as a lubricant for that purpose. You'll want heavy grease for that.
Edit: parktools grease isn't that expensive, though you don't really need their grease for general purposes. A tub of automative grease works well enough, even better if it's rated for Marine use if you stay near the sea. https://www.amazon.com/Park-Tool-PPL-1-PolyLube-Lubricant/dp/B01EONS0VY
I had my doubts prior to making this purchase. How could bar tapes that cost this little possibly be of decent quality?
However, upon opening the package, the first thought that came to mind was that this bar tape is suspiciously similar in feel and appearance to my bike's original (Cube Grip Control). And that's a good thing.
This tape goes on smoothly, stays in place well with a generous adhesive strip and includes probably the best finishing tape I have ever touched.
Lizard Skins, Supacaz — eat your hearts out.
Came in a set of 4 so my wife and I have matching bar tape now! :D
This is way too much stuff (and the wrong stuff).
Cleat covers are unnecessary for this ride, you don't need a rag, you don't need bottle three on that route (plenty of refills), you don't need a back up battery (unless maybe if you still use iPhone for tracking).
Why did you only bring one PB&J and a gel on a century? No pump/tubes? For this ride your pockets should be all food, pump (or CO2, 2x tubes.
Also, ditch the gatorade mix and pick up something more worthwhile.

The guy sounds like a dickbag. He claims he couldn't stop, or even come to a slower and safer speed. Why do I think he was riding a brakeless fixie?
Edit: Rumors are yes, he probably had a fixed gear with no brakes.
I’ve heard horror stories of locks being tampered with so that when you lock your bike up they just unlock it and steal your bike without looking dodgy. Sure it might be a kg or two but I would never leave my lock behind.
The hip lock is quite cool, wear it around your waist so you don’t really notice the weight. I’ve not got one but have heard good things compared to putting a chain in a backpack.
Pretty sure that's photoshop, but you can buy leggings with all kinds of different prints.
Have a bell on your bike and ring it until they are aware you are coming. Use this method when I'm on the trails and never fails.
Edit: We have this one here on all our bikes and it's great. Easy to install and adjust, all you need is a screwdriver. Personally like it because you can use it without having to take your hand off the handlebars. And the fact that it's on Amazon for $2.00 is a bonus. We have about 5 of them.
Please don't use link shorteners, they get you caught in the spam filter. They break many of the underpinnings of the web, add another layer that slows things down and could break, and hide important context for users (Have I visited this? Is this site malware? Will it give me nightmares?). If the service disappears, like tr.im did a couple of years ago, I can’t use google cache or archive.org.

Depending on your trailer brand/model, you might actually be able to fix the "springyness" very inexpensively. I have had a bunch of kids trailers and some of them literally have a spring that provides the "give" that a trailer like these need. You can replace that spring with a stiff rubber/plastic piece that is a replacement part for a Burley. This takes out 95% of the annoying springyness! Obviously you wil have to make sure this will work with your current hitch or buy a new hitch that matches. This is what I am talking about-> https://www.amazon.com/Burley-Design-Connector-Round-Black/dp/B001GSQXUG/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1540468388&sr=8-6&keywords=burley+hitch+adapter

I learned the same thing about hobbies when I got into speakers. When I was first looking at speakers, the KEF LS50 ($1500 a pair normally, they're in sale right now it looks like haha) came up quite a bit, and I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that anyone would ever spend that much money on a pair of speakers!
Well, I've been into speakers for quite a while, and those speakers barely scratch the surface. They're phenomenal speakers, but plenty of people have speakers that are $10k+ and I don't think it's ridiculous now.
I was looking to get an electric bike recently, and at first I was like "why aren't there many options at around $1000 or less?" But then I remembered what happened with speakers, and it makes sense. I just wasn't aware that it was all out there, and that's a big hobby for a lot of people and it can get pretty expensive.
Now I look at pretty much everything like that. Unfortunately, my brother doesn't get it still. I was "into" watches for a bit (I've only got a few, and none of them are very expensive at all). He asked me to find him a watch that looks like x (he described it for me, I don't remember). I found him a Seiko that was $300 or so, because, knowing a lot about watches, I thought "this one is a great value for him". He saw the price tag and said "I was thinking under $100". Sorry bud, that probably won't happen for what you want.
Anyways, this is all to say, don't judge the amount of money someone's hobby costs until you really know what it's about.
$170? YIKES NO! People should buy the $49 Spin Doctor essential tool kit instead. It is the exact same thing minus a cleaning brush and $15 cable cutters.
I only started riding seriously two weeks ago, and for a really big guy am happy with my progress so far!

Thanks mate. Being big and liking riding up mountains meant I had to learn how to suffer very early on in my cycling career, I think that really helped. The only way to find out if you can is to give it a go, that's what I did! The road is known as Little Italy, 73 repeats, just over 19.5 hours total including stationary time.
you can look at different options for routing on ride with gps.
Best one goes North West then North then North East
I believe it is this one from Amazon. I spent a while researching options and drawing up potential plans to make my own before I ultimately decided to buy the two bike gravity mount. Only needs one drill hole and very little risk of it falling. For $45 I can put off a more artistic rack for a while. The thing is rock solid too with a road bike and cross bike on it.
Word of warning: if you order this and it doesn't come in the retailer's box inside the Amazon box send it back immediately and get a replacement. It is used and likely won't come together nicely.
You can make then out of old inner tubes which is often the fastest way of doing it.
Or get something like this from Amazon
You're looking for a rubber shim/band
I use this balaclava mask for Winter cycling. The face mask OP is wearing is super powerful, but if you don't ride in sub zero F (or -17.78*°*C), then you'll be good to go.
It extends toward your chest and back, so it keeps your neck warm too. I really like it.
I got a very similar jacket for walking my dog around the neighborhood. It was $30 on Amazon. The sizes run a little small but it works great. For some reason the front zipper zips all the way up the hood but whatever.

Undoubtedly, good sir. I am instantly taken aback to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance where the distinction is made about being in a car (it's like watching a TV [the windshield separates you from the outside world]) versus being on a bike/motorcycle (you're a part of the environment and immersed in the scenery).
Cycling is beautiful thing.
In the past I've made several orders of 20-50 pairs of each of the red and white lights in these links
http://www.dx.com/p/2-led-3-mode-fog-bicycle-light-red-pair-2-cr2032-48296
http://www.dx.com/p/2-led-3-mode-fog-bicycle-light-white-pair-2-cr2032-48295
and tested them and put them pairs of one red and one white. I'm not specifically committed to them and it's entirely possible that I can do better somewhere else now but this is what has worked well in the past for me personally. My specific requirement was under $5 per pair and could be clipped onto a bike without tools. I'd prefer they not use coin cell batteries but that is the tradeoff I'm making to get the other two things.
These lights can be found in lots of places for lots of prices. And just dx.com and affiliates has half a dozen pricing schemes you can use to buy these. Depending on where you are and how many you're buying different schemes will work better for you.

This was the last weekend before they open Hwy 20 (Washington State, USA) in the North Cascades to motor vehicle traffic for the season. Hundreds of cyclists gather to ride a portion (or all) of the closed roadway - especially when the weather is so nice, as it was yesterday.
From Ross Lake Trailhead to Rainy Pass and back is about 47 miles round trip, 4000' feet elevation gain. (Friend's RWGPS: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35849856)
I had ridden it before, twice, from the east, from Methow up to Washington Pass. This was the first time taking it from the west. The scenery was spectacular, through North Cascades National Park.
I started wearing four layers on top: wool undershirt, long-sleeved jersey, fleece - and carried a rain jacket and thick mittens. As I did the climb, in the warm mid-day sun, I shed down to just the wool undershirt, and seriously considered shedding the tights - and wondered if I had lost my mind bringing so much. But I put back on every single one of those layers - plus the mittens, plus pulling the bandana over my face - for the first 5 miles or so of the descent. The sweat evaporates cooling you rapidly, and the walls of snow are COLD.
But I agree, carbon layup and lightweight wing construction techniques have advanced a lot in the last forty years. Partly due to their use in sailing.

There's a segment I tripped the other day on Strava. The #2-#5 guys all maintained somewhere around 23-24mph up the hill on this segment, but #1 apparently averaged 346.7mph
Yep, just found it. It was created by Bryan Couchman. You can request a reprint of a shirt with the logo. He has some other nice designs as well.
That does look cool as a tattoo BTW.
If you just use that smaller wheel on the large bikes front fork.....you'll be tilted downward.
This makes, effectively, a self-powered bike!
The acceleration you'll feel forward is gravity*(cos(angle to the ground))=8.09m^2/s*cos(30)=7
Given the average weight of a person to be 7kg, this will make a force of 49 newtons pulling you forward (7X7=49)
You can only travel until you end up behind where you started (otherwise, you'd be gaining height and this wouldn't work), so, the farthest you can go is the circumference of the earth (before getting back to where you were). That's about 1,000,000 kilometers (1 gigameter)
Energy=force*distance
Energy=49 newtons* 1 giga-meter
Energy =49 giga-jouels
according to wolfram alpha, 49 gj's are about 68% the power an auto needs to work for a year
Not bad for almost whatever you pay to get the little wheel!
Side note: You can probably run 25's just fine so don't confine yourself to 23's. As long as you have about 1-2 mm of clearance between your tires and brake calipers you're fine to go slightly larger and might be able to find some 25mm for cheap. Those tires have a good rating on Amazon.com. Here's some Continental Ultra Sport II for $16.50 each on Amazon with prime shipping.
it's called politi, https://itunes.apple.com/dk/app/politi/id805575005?l=da&mt=8 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.politi.borgerapp&hl=da
only works on bikes reported stolen in denmark
Unfortunately, something came up and I won't be able to watch the interview live. If someone here would like to keep up with the bingo card that I was doing last night, here is a link to a download of the .psd file I was working in. I'm counting on you, /r/bicycling!

Build and adventure details:
After owning a dozen-plus bikes, and having 7 in my current stable I finally bought my first-ever bike in an LBS. My friend (who helps manage said shop) and I worked together on parts selection, and replicated the fit of my favorite fitting touring bike. A few tiny details to work out through riding in the next week or two mostly due to switching handlebar type (110 vs 120 stem)
The build:
First adventure:
In 25 days I'll be packing this up into a backpack case, flying to Paris, taking a train and then riding this route over 6 days. I'll be adding a Tubus Duo front rack prior to then to support two small Ortlieb panniers. It'll be a credit card tour so no camping gear this time.
hi, i like komoot.com. Gives you a detailed tour. Evlevation, road surface, type of road etc. You can plan everything in your browser for free. You dont have to register either.
You only pay for offline maps on android or iphone per region. One region is free so you can try it on a tour.
Or you plan in a browser and print everything.
I used it for touring and bought all maps in some christmas special for 15€. Its much for an app but its super easy to download the maps and offline maps will save your ass when you are in the middle of nowhere with no mobile data :)
it has values to look for
mtb:scale (higher is worse)
smoothness
tracktype (higher means less good quality)
surface
example:

Can be tricky to deal with them in a bike router, but a few are looking at these values
I lubed my chain two weeks ago, so I'll pass for the video if you don't mind.
But if you use something like this, which is what I have at the moment, it's really easy and quick. The lube is viscous enough that you don't apply more than a drop and it's quite precise thanks to the rather small head.
Dang, that looks like a pretty awesome road for a nice training ride, too.
This is why we can't have nice things.
