Im working on a bike app that lets you look up bikes and see their specs. you can use this to derive what standards/compatibility applies and help identify/compare bikes in general.
Sprocket is free on Android. Rating it helps more mechanics see it :D https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket&hl=en
I built an Android app that allows you to look up thousands of bikes by brand>year>model to reference their specs. and standards:

I recommend being honest with your customers about your level of experience, so that they know what to expect, atleast until you feel that you have "picked up on the pace". :)
read through the resources I just added in build 1.3.3. ParkTool, SheldonBrown and JimLangley will get you quite a ways in the right direction ;)
My Sprocket app has some great repair reference links on each bicycle page to Sheldon Brown, Park Tool & Jim Langley. All 3 have a step-by-step indexed RD adjustment tutorial

+1 on threads being visible.
-or when the sidewalls are showing threads and/or bulging.
Usually tires will say on the side what kind you need to replace them with, but if they dont you can use my Android app, Sprocket, to figure out the diameter by looking up your bike: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket&hl=en
Im going to shamelessly plug the Sprocket app I just made because it can help with maintenance and repair:

I've built an app for looking up bike specs like this. Its called Sprocket. Its up on the Android Play Store. I dont think I have that brand in yet... but I will eventually. :D

You can use my app, Sprocket, to look up your bike. If its in our database you can find out what brand-year-model crank you have. Then you can look up your crank and see what standards it follows or give that information to your LBS mechanic.

You can use my Sprocket bike catalog app to get a good feel for whats been built by whom - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket&hl=en
The best way to get the most quality for your dollar is to find your local bike co-op. They usually sell fully rebuilt 70s-90s bikes for $200-300 that will last a lifetime
Wow this did better than I thought it would
For the record I run the first major independent bike marketplace app here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket
Check it out - maybe leave me a good review or some feedback ✌️
Thanks for the write up!
I added my social accounts to the bottom of my description now. Can you take a look at my ASOd app description quickly and tell me if there is anything else that jumps out for improvement?

Not sure if you have a busineness helping with something mobile and want app-related optimization tips or if youre asking for mobile business ideas in general.
Heres my app description page for example. I just went through the description and AppSearchOptimized (ASO'd) it further today. If you already have a page I recommend Googling the term as well as searching for articles on Medium.

You can shop around or online for a second bike and use my new Android app, Sprocket, to peek into the bike specs for a 9sp drivetrain. Once you find one for cheap, you can use your better quality 9sp parts to upgrade it :D
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket&hl=en
You can look up your bike in my app Sprocket and find out what year it is and if all the parts are original https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket&hl=en
Recommendation 1: unbolt the "Turkey" levers that go to the flat part of your bars. They were designed for speed modulation, not braking, and are known not to brake well. Most bicycle co-ops remove them from bikes like yours automatically.
Recommendation 2: Take your bike to a local bike shop for a look-over. It sounds to me like youre new to this and they usually wont charge you anything for advice. :D (Id rather have you become part of the velorution than get in a serious accident because we did not spot something on an internet forum.)
Im doing the same thing with my vintage racing bike here: http://www.bikeforums.net/bicycle-mechanics/1040334-building-1x-drivetrain-vintage-road-bike.html
I am going to be buying a new 7sp mega-freewheel and keeping the system running on retro-friction barcons, because I dont want to spread the drops or by indexed shifters.
Check for you bike in my Sprocket Android app and it will help you figure out whats compatible or share it for any future upgrade help.

I just added a whole bunch of Litespeed bikes to the Sprocket app including 1999. @sporobolus is right, the 2000yr models are 1-1/8th

Look up your bike in my bike info app, Sprocket, and see what derailleur type you need. Show it to your LBS and they will order and/or install a replacement for you :D

The only way this would work is if you had a Phil Wood BB which can be adjusted left-to-right, but those are expensive and require two proprietary BB cup tools to set up.
Next time you can use my Sprocket catalog app to check bikes ahead of time and make sure their BB standards match up :D
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket&hl=en
Look up your bikes in my new Android bike app Sprocket and see if your bikes list BB info: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket&hl=en
Might be compatible and it might not. If not, you can bring my app into your local bike shop and show them what you need. They'll order it for you.
You can use my app to see what bikes what companies made each year - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket&hl=en
Made an app for buying and selling bikes called Sprocket. You can check it out here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket
Anything you see that does not work and can be improved in my pages ASO? - here:

Interesting
I might try it out later today when I get home for my app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.retrographic.sprocket&hl=en
That was good. I always wondered if I should reply to every review on my app page:
