First, You need one of these.
Second, cold northern states are always the ones where kickstands sink in during the summer, because the asphalt needs to be prepared extra soft in order to withstand freezing temperatures in the winter.
I do it so often, I made myself a shirt to commemorate it.
Edit: Wow, I didn't expect that response! I just made it for some friends, but, I put it back up since you guys were asking. You can get them here (Mods, does this violate the 'No sales/donation posts'?)
Because I think I might want one, and because others may as well, I present "Squishy the Squirrel" and his friend "Mr. Frog".
HJC sells that helmet lmao.
Buy a used gopro 3+ silver. Specifically the 3+. They make a battery that clamps on AND replaces the stock battery.
In 1080P it lasts 6 hours on a 64 gig memory card. That's long enough for any ride. Ive been using that set up for a few years now and love it.
$100 for the camera
$30 for the battery
$15 or whatever for one of the knockoff go pro accessories kits. Comes with all the arm pieces and sticky mounts so you can lego together something that will work for to mount it on the side of the helmet.
$20 for the memory card.
Here is the battery I use. Its been flawless for me I tried the one that clamps on and uses the factory battery, but was unreliable in switching between them when one ran out, This one has been perfect and not let me down yet. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MFWO8YA
If the $20 one has a vent button like the No-Spill brand containers then yeah it would totally be worth it.

Here we go again everyone! Round 4 giveaway: Reflective black. I have 10 mirrored pairs to give away. This is what they look like in their normal, non-reflecting state. Same rules as before, send me a postage paid, self addressed envelope to the address I provide through PM and when I receive it I will return it back to you with these fancy stickers inside. (Outside the US just send me a self addressed envelope and I'll take care of the return postage)
This project is entirely funded by you guys! Without your donations, none of this would be possible. Here is the PayPal donation link for anyone who would like to contribute to the giveaway fund to keep things going. As a token of appreciation to those who donate $10 or more I've been sending out reflective white or reflective black stickers. Donations, as always, are not required to win these stickers. They help keep this project going.
I need those who send me a PM to do 2 things. The first thing is I want you to tell me what your favorite bike is. If you are one of the first 15 I will respond with my address along with a unique code. Write the unique code on the back of the envelope that you send to me along with your reddit username.
And that's it! Good luck and ride safely!
EDIT And they're gone!
In the few years I've been looking at Craiglist posts, I've never looked at the Prohibited list until now. I guess $1 posts would fall under
>false, misleading, deceptive, or fraudulent content; bait and switch; keyword spam
F1 cars are faster at every track, and they brake fast due to high downforce, four fat tires, 4 carbon discs and only 700kg weight. https://www.quora.com/Which-is-faster-F1-car-or-Moto-GP-motorcycle-Why
At Sepang, F1 cars are 25 seconds a lap faster.
Well yeah, compared to the big 4 in Japan no one stands a chance.
But statistically, here are some numbers from that infamous consumer reports article a few years back.
Brand | % Failed |
---|---|
Yamaha/Star | 11% |
Suzuki | 12% |
Honda | 12% |
Kawasaki | 15% |
Victory | 17% |
HD | 26% |
Triumph | 29% |
Ducati | 33% |
BMW | 40% |
Can-Am | 42% |
It's difficult to even find any other studies out there showing other major manufacturers or updated details in the past 3-5 years. Ducati is 33% followed by BMW at 40%. Both of those are pretty high!
If you'd be up for a cheaper alternative, I used one of these for a year and it worked fantastically:

Not as cool and technically not as secure as a rigid shell, but really affordable.
In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame.
On a cycle the frame is gone. You're completely in contact with it all. You're in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming.

I don't want to just watch more TV, regardless of how fast it may be...
There pricing is very good, especially on gear with the return policy you receive. Part pricing is still good, especially if you make the free shipping on the smaller moto-specific items like chain lube, etc. Beats Amazon's price by several $$.
Maxima Chain Wax
Amazon - $14
RevZilla - $11.50
Not to mention I have to pay tax on items sold by Amazon which really sours the deal.
Every product you bought you returned? Every product was $50-$100 less when you bought it somewhere else? Why did you keep buying from RevZilla and keep returning their items? Why didn't you do research before you bought it?
After getting rear ended by a small SUV going 30 when I was going 25 and having my 2009 Vstrom totaled, I made sure to mount a front and rear dashcam onto its replacement, a 2008 R1200RT. Powered from the bikes accessory circuit, which is programmed to stay hot about 5 minutes after key off. DVR, that has it's own screen and is also viewable on a smartphone using the DVRs own wifi. I never worry about battery life, and I never worry about forgetting to turn it on. https://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Recording-HaloCam-Waterproof-Recorder/dp/B07D371DRF

If you're going down this road, go slow, and be careful with cutting your pieces off the sprues cleanly. The kits aren't tough to put together, but you've really got to pay attention to what you're doing.
The insurance premium part is easily proven or disproven by calling up insurance companies. Service for exotic bikes is more expensive just by the labor cost of people willing to work on them. Whether they need significantly more service than other bikes I think strongly depends on the type of bike, though Ducatis did not fare well in a Consumer Reports survey. Anecdotally, I know people who have had nothing but problems with their Ducatis, and I've known people who have had only minor problems with their Ducatis. That said, a motorcycle is impractical, and if a Ducati is what tickles your fancy, then you'd beat yourself up if you didn't at least try to live with one.
Bear mace. I have to drive thru a large homeless area on my way home from school and this crossed my mind before after seeing a homeless man put his face on the window of a car. Fuck that noise.

I bought some craft syringes from Amazon when I couldn't find my applicator tip that came with the Hylomar. I also ended up using them to apply oil in tight spots while I was replacing my cam shafts and doing a valve adjustment.
The gasket maker I'm using is Hylomar Universal Blue which is great for engine building. I've used it in full rebuilds. When I took the valve cover off, the Hylomar came off easy and was still a bit tacky.
EDIT: The motor is for a 08 R6 and yes I'm reusing the OEM gasket so I'm applying the Hylomar all around to be safe.

I loved the big obvious 'Suzuki' logo, the company that makes a total Monster tribute (and in more forgiving litigious climates, a total ripoff.
Places like Amazon sell it for like $7 for I think 6 feet of it
edit: first guess was off a little. You can get this kit for $6.59 for 9 feet with the battery holder and inverter.
You Never See A Motorcycle Parked Outside A Therapist's Office is a bit cliche, but there is a thing to it. Enjoy the ride once you're healed!
But as others have said, real clinical depression may need other attention than just riding. It helps, though.
That's way to expensive for what looks like a fibre optic cable.
Edit: After doing some research I found out it's electroluminescent (El) wire. El wire is ridiculously inexpensive, 9 feet (~2.7 meters) for $8 including the battery pack.
In other words this is an ABSOLUTE SCAM.
Also here's the link to the product I'm referring to on Amazon
Family full of law enforcement in various states. De-escalation is a recent addition to the ones working outside the city, and even in the city it's pretty new: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/28/us/long-taught-to-use-force-police-warily-learn-to-de-escalate.html?_r=0
A lovely quote: “Last week, there was a guy in a car who wouldn’t show me his hands,” the officer said. “I pulled my gun out and stuck it right in his nose, and I go, ‘Show me your hands now!’ That’s de-escalation.”
It's a real problem unfortunately.
Edit: Come on guys, it's a valid criticism. Don't downvote someone adding to the conversation.

If you own a snowblower, you absolutely live in a location that needs heated grips on your motorcycle.
I live in CA and even use them on the few “cold” mornings we have. Go buy them from the link below and thank me later.

You can also try silver wheel paint, it has a very similar finish to the paint that Yamaha uses. Slightly lighter in shade but the flake is just about the same. Take the cap off before you paint it, then you won't have to worry about masking the tank and you won't get paint in the fasteners.

Welcome to the forum! If you're new to reddit, a couple pointers:
There are literally a hundred thousand people here. A couple of them are dicks. NBD (no big deal).
Those little arrows next to every comment & post are voting arrows. If you upvote something, other users will be more likely to see it. If you downvote it, it may disappear entirely. So, use accordingly.
This forum is a very broad, general interest forum, mostly used by novices, plus a handful of grumpy old know-it-alls. There are other forums: there's /r/Motorrad, /r/motorcyclesroadtrip, and /r/motocamping for example. In general, the smaller the forum, the less it sucks.
RES will let you look at photos and videos without leaving the site. Good piece of software.
For another recommendation for ear plugs, I use the Alpine Motosafe Pros. Used them on a long highway ride on my KLR and they make a world of difference. On a related note, for anyone looking to do this with a car you can buy cheap bluetooth OBD2 modules on Amazon for about $25.
On Android most people use the app Torque.
I use the $5 paid version of torque, I don't remember what the limitations are for the free version of it but it's money well spent because you can view a lot of diag data, check engine codes etc.
There are a couple times where I connected it to peoples cars, texted them the CEL codes, and cleared the light for them when its something simple. It was money well spent.
yep - she was halfway through a streetfighter conversion when I got her, the exhaust is an R6 Two Brothers (hence the janky attachment). Pegs are from Amazon cause I'm a cheap bastard and a bit tall for this bike.
Get the $7 can from Amazon.
I got one of those little reminder cables. I attach one end to the lock and the other to somewhere visible on the bike, so I see it every time I walk up to it.
Current favorite new app is Weather Route. Give it your average speed, starting point, and one or more destinations and it tells you weather along the way and warns of the best time to start to miss storms. Does routing through Google maps.
Depends who you ask, Consumer Reports did a study in 2015 that showed a 33% failure with Ducati which was a little better than BMW's 40%. Probably don't see a lot of people saying BMWs are made poorly and have bad engineering though, right?
A couple of friends and I went on a weekend trip on the Mae Hong Son loop, which is a sort of a legendary riding trip around here.
Left to right: Honda CBR 650 F, Honda CB 650 F, Kawasaki Versys.
According to a recent owner's survey conducted by Consumer Reports, Harley scores well below the major Japanese brands on reliability, but ahead of Triumph, Ducati, and BMW: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2015/04/who-makes-the-most-reliable-motorcycle/index.htm
Remote deals are super, extra shady. There's usually an advance-fee con, or a forged cashier's check which you end up paying. Conveniently not available for prosecution.

ooh get that FZ750 that's a sexy bike. love those colors.
FYI, the FZ 750 was only made by yamaha for ~one year, 1985-86 (excellent years, btw). afterwards they swapped it to the FZ*R* 750 Genesis (the band, not the book).
This was the first bike by yamaha to feature the aggressively tilted forward cylinder arrangement, which required relocating the carbs, airbox, and fuel tank into the traditional arrangement we see on modern sportbikes (sub throttle bodies for carbs). it wouldn't be too much to say this bike was the first "modern sportbike" from Yamaha, not just in style, but in substance.
94 hp @ 9400 rpm max AT THE REAR TIRE, 105 @10500rpm max at the crank.
60 lbft of torque at 8000 rpm
you should still be careful because that bike is very powerful and still fling you into something faster than you realize. IMO, this isn't the best choice for a noob bike, but you have a few years under your belt and you seem to have taken enough classes to at least know what respectful riding is, so you should be okay!
It's an 80's street runner, lean and mean. Can seriously rip it up all punk rock style.
> high maintenance costs haven't been a major issue since about 2008 (they're on par with most Japanese bikes now)
My riding buddy commutes on a 1199 Panigale, and in comparison to any other Jap sportbike, that thing is a maintenance and repair nightmare. Intervals are normal-ish but under warranty, Ducati strongly advises to have all maintenance done by Ducati for them to want to honor the warranty. That means $$$. And stuff is breaking on it all the time. I think his has spent as much time in the shop as it has on the road. And then look at Snowcat's Hypermotard.
And the reliability report from a couple years ago. Ducati having issues 3x more often than Japanese brands across their lineup.
No, Ducati is not on par with the Japanese bikes now.
The one Duc you have is their low stress touring bike, so I'd hope it'd be more 'normal', but their whole lineup isn't that way.
> Baclava for my head/neck
DuPont Teflon Chain Saver can be found at most walmarts... It's cheap and WAY better than most other chain lubes. I've used tons of different lubes of the years and most of them suck.
Chain saver is waxy and does not collect any road grime, I used to clean my chain every month or so with old (sticky) lubes, I haven't cleaned my chain in nearly two years and it still looks clean.
I bought this exact model off of amazon a few weeks ago. It comes with it's own power pack/converter. All you need to add to make it work is 2 AA batteries.
A GoPro would be a great addition, but if you replace the bike, you may want to consider front and rear cameras. I hit a car yesterday when the driver pulled out in front of me. I had my cameras running, so I have a recording of the whole incident. Unfortunately, the driver's insurance company claims that his policy is "not in force". He probably stopped paying the premium once he got the car registered. So, I'm paying for some minor repairs. Full gear helped me a lot too and I got away without injury.
This is the camera gear I bought: https://www.amazon.com/Blueskysea-Motorcycle-Recording-Waterproof-Version/dp/B07MTC4YJ5/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=dv688&qid=1570159877&sr=8-2
A friend of mine launched this app recently, motogo. It calculates road curvy-ness based on OpenStreetMaps data. As far as I understand it, it only works in the US and western Europe at the moment. More locations are being added over time.

You don't get navigation but I wouldn't really want that anyway.. I just wanted something that points me in the right direction. I've been using it quite a bit lately and I really love it.
It's really really new so there might be some bugs here and there.
Is that really the case?
I realize there's some controversy to their findings, but consumer reports is usually pretty reliable.
~~Does the GoPro have a looping record mode like dash-cams have?~~
~~I've considered getting one but I'd never have the foresight to hit "record".~~
Nevermind, one search for 'gopro loop recording' later and I'm watching a video of a guy setting that shit up. Goodbye, money!
Unfortunately this sort is scam is very common http://hackaday.com/2016/03/10/yet-another-kickstarter-scam/ is a recent example, it's very easy to scam people with fake prototypes because most people don't know anything about electronics to be able too tell the difference.
Here is another one where the product was already on the market and they wanted money to improve "their" prototypes, even the pictures of the boards where scaled down to appear that they where making the devices smaller http://www.eevblog.com/forum/crowd-funded-projects/anonabox-or-how-to-make-$2m-for-a-week-of-work/
You should check out this report: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2015/04/who-makes-the-most-reliable-motorcycle/index.htm
States that in quite a large study, Ducati bikes are 2-3 times more likely to fail than Japanese bikes.

Or just $25.00 every day at Amazon
Hell yeah! You're spot on about them being Portal bikes now, right on, absolutely beautiful.
I'll get customTAYLOR33 tape on my grey/green Ninja 400 next week, not sure about which color I'll go with. I'm thinking lime green or gold. Maybe blue. Also thinking about getting this light kit sometime
> But Hell's Angels started riding Harley-Davidsons mostly because, unlike today, they didn't have much choice. In 1957, it was either ride a Harley or settle for a Triumph or BSA. They'd already stopped building Indians. It's always been important for Hell's Angels to ride American-made machines. In terms of pure workmanship, personally I don't like Harleys. I ride them because I'm in the club, and that's the image, but if I could I would seriously consider a Honda ST1100 or a BMW. We really missed the boat not switching over to the Japanese models when they began building bigger bikes. I'll usually say, "#$%* Harley Davidson. You can buy an ST1100 and the mother#$%*er will do 110 miles per hour right from the factory all day long." The newest "rice rockets" can carry 140 horsepower to the rear wheel, and can easily do 180 miles per hour right out of the box. While it's probably too late to switch over now, it would have been a nice move, because Japanese bikes today are so much cheaper and better built. However, Japanese motorcycles don't have as much personality.
—Hell's Angel: The Life and Times of Sonny Barger and the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club
Dude, just making a point. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a fucking great book. One of the early books I read that interested me in Buddhism, and subsequently motorcycles.
e: I accidentally botched the book title.
OP actually seemed reasonable until this, nevermind the fact that the 3 major japanese manufacturers are way more reliable than HD.

Sunday June 28, 2015. The crowds were coming back from Paradiso at The Gorge. I was on my 919. I had a camelback, but it was still kind of hot. It was 103. Sorry I was off by two degrees.
ಠ_ಠ
My bike used to be an MSF course bike. The stalling issue is caused by the rubber coupling holding the air intake to the carb. Look at that picture, and you'll see the carb is just "dangling" there by it's intake manifold. Good stuff.
The fix? Das Boot. This one part fixes 99% of the Blast's engine difficulties. Why they don't sell it this way stock is beyond me. It's a stainless band around the entire coupling. The old one would crack (without rotting) and you'd get all sorts of stupid symptoms. Since I've installed this - smooth as silk.
> Harley stock is down 25% from January, as analysts know the company has no future.
Well, then it seems like the CEO made a good move, if the company wasn't going to survive.
https://www.fool.com/investing/2018/05/03/harley-davidson-sales-go-from-bad-to-worse.aspx
It seems like the company needed to change the type of bike they manufactured. I wonder how the brand value would have been affected if they started making different types of bikes.
Sensors, yeah, I had sensors on my RAV4. One time I was reversing towards a bike but they didn't pick anything up.
Confused, I got out and took this picture.
That's quite a blind spot.
Consumer reports did an article on this in April. They typically do a decent job at surveying so I'd accept their data as relatively close to reality. Looks like Yamaha and Suzuki are at the top. Which, anecdotally sounds right to me as my Suzuki has been bullet proof.
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2015/04/who-makes-the-most-reliable-motorcycle/index.htm
Using https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/stopping-distance you need 450 metres plus your reaction distance which is at least another 50m. Nobody is looking that far behind them in their mirrors.
You need a minimum of 0.5km clear vision ahead of you at 300kph. Thats 0.5km of zero chance of a vehicle pulling out in front of you at 80km/h
That's a lot more than the just over 100m you need at 160km/h closing on 80km/h vehicles.
See this knob?
Twist it a bit until the lever tightens up to your liking.
Keep in mind that adjusting this will move your catch-point on the clutch, so make sure to test that it works properly on a stand before attempting to ride the bike.
And if like me, you already have the extender, you can buy just the keyed knob HERE on Amazon :)
The Art of War is a great book, but i've always felt that the Hagakure was more applicable to day to day life.
EDIT: holy shit. sorry guys. apparently error:500 means it's gonna post, but only when it gets around to it!
Have you taken the MSF course (or equivalent for your location, if outside the US)? It sounds like you're struggling with some of what is taught there.
Read/watch Twist of The Wrist 2? If you haven't, do so. If you have, do it again. Also, read 'Sport Riding Techniques' by Nick Ienatsch. Very good resource.
Me too. I figured it was an exercise class for your sphincter.
Clench, release, clench, release, clench....
I'm used to this level of realism.
Here's the right hook he alludes to in the description via his Instagram
Dominoes response: "We expect professional standards from our drivers, this behaviour is unacceptable. We are working to resolve this issue swiftly"
I think you've got that backwards, but I agree that more electrics are definitely on the horizon. My only issue is that I take long road trips and I have no desire to sit around waiting for a charge every couple hundred miles.

Bump stop. Order some thick adhesive race seat foam off Amazon and make your own that's what me and my teammates did. We doubled it up to make it the correct thickness.

Lots of different answers. The correct short answer is “no”.
The slightly longer answer is, only if the charging system puts out enough current at idle RPM to overcome the current draw of the ignition system, the lights, the fuel pump, and and other misc electrical stuff that’s on while your bike is running as well as replenishing all the juice used up by starting the bike in the first place.
The faster the engine runs, the more current made by the charging system. Excess current is bled off as heat by the regulator-rectifier. Why would a manufacturer build a charging system that always makes more energy than needed at cruising RPM by building one that delivers net-positive flow at idle? 😉
Buy a trickle charger for $20 and either hook it to the battery while it’s in the bike, or remove the battery and bring it inside somewhere and hook it up and leave it for the winter. (Battery Tender on Amazon)

Disregard Device Finder, acquire Cerebrus.
It's a paid solution ($5/yr) but look at the feature set.
It was amazing. This is on Hwy 93 in Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada
Funny how overall, Harley riders are satisfied far more. As I type that, it occurred to me that many Harley riders simply could be ignorant and not care about technology on their bikes etc and are thus happier with an infection product. With that out of the way, I'll offer a counter point. Harley's are raw, and old school. They've stayed largely the same for so long that it's almost a virtue. If we wanted the safest, cheapest or most reliable form of transport, we'd all be in a cage, or the metro. But we don't. We want that feeling of freedom, and control. And Harley's give you that more than many other brands. Everything on it feels built to last, and it is. You can work on it with basic tools. The engine just feels glorious, and the connection you experience with the machine can only be matched by few other motorcycles. Objective fact? No. But a lot of people love the feedback loop so to speak, same as the Ducati L twin, or that moment where the power kicks in, one an inline 4. It's like the difference between a Camry and a V8 Mustang. One is smooth, reliable, efficient. Other is loud and not well optimized. But it's fun, and has character. So while they don't perform the best, they've been updated enough to perform as well as the average user needs it to. In real world performance on the street, you'll never find it lacking, especially due to the way the motor makes its power. Ride one, if you haven't. Odds are you'll like it.
Yes. It's like a more compact version of the Cone of Silence

edit: Apparently you guys are taking this a little more seriously than I thought...I should clarify that this is just a 3D artists rendition, not an official Koenigsegg concept. Nothing to get worked up over, just an interesting conversation starter. I'm neither for or against the design, just thought some of you might find it intriguing.
Fortunately, there are actual statistics on this. Consumer Reports - Who makes the most reliable motorcycle?
Brand - Percent failed
Yamaha/Star - 11%
Suzuki - 12%
Honda - 12%
Kawasaki - 15%
Victory - 17%
Harley-Davidson - 26%
Triumph - 29%
Ducati - 33%
BMW - 40%
Can-Am - 42%
So, while not the least reliable, 1/3 of Ducatis run into mechanical trouble within 4 years. TIL Can-Ams are horribly unreliable.
Unfortunately, anecdotal evidence isn't evidence.
Consumer reports show they're less reliable than other brands. Sure, you could get a good one. You're more likely to be just fine than not, but you'd do better with a more reliable brand.
Check it out here.

Sorry didn't realized it was behind a sign-in wall. It is a group buy site, it is currently $300. Here is the amazon link to the camera.
Awesome! Its super satisfying.
parts are surprisingly cheap! I really like eastwood and amazon for finding stuff for painting.
Pretty awesome $70 paint gun that will work with a cheap compressor (only uses like 4cfm!): http://www.eastwood.com/concours-lt-hvlp-paint-gun-1-3mm.html
Eastwood also has some nice single stage urethane paints (clear coat built in) that I like a lot and are cheap, or your local auto parts store should have a budget brand.
Definitely a fun project to do yourself, and surprisingly easy!
I would recommend that if you have a little space to work in, you can hang up some plastic and put a fan on to make a little spray booth, even outside! But also you will find like you did that you can get a good finish just sanding between coats even if there is a little dust.
Cut and buff with some polishing compounds and you will have a paint job that will look and feel pro, with high corrosion, solvent and wear resistance!
according to Consumer Reports it goes:
Brand | Percent Failed (First 4 years) |
---|---|
Yamaha/Star | 11% |
Suzuki | 12% |
Honda | 12% |
Kawasaki | 15% |
Victory | 17% |
Harley-Davidson | 26% |
Triumph | 29% |
Ducati | 33% |
BMW | 40% |
Can-Am | 42% |
Looks like a run of the mill generic Chinese cheapo. I think I found the same type of engine on Alibaba for sale here.
Here is my crash from 5 months ago that is very similar to yours. I saw gravel in the road and I decided to un-commit from the turn. The correct decision would have been to stay committed and ride through the gravel. Motorcycle tires grip well, even in gravelly conditions.
Now that you've crashed, you know better and will be prepared for next time.
I didn't know either and googled around a bit. Apparently it is common to do a sideways nod in the UK, since there greeting would mean to take your hand of the throttle (comment by Peter Murias). TIL.
Works with GoPro mounts. The only annoying thing is that you can only change the settings from their app. Can't do it on the camera itself.
