Go for it, just don't stress yourself. I've been practicing for a year now, once or twice a week, sometimes I skip a whole month, then the interest is back again and I find myself practicing almost every day for a week, then it's gone again for a couple of days and so on, you get the idea.
You can get a cheap guitar, mine was about 250 € and my buddy who plays since he was a kid helped me pick out the guitar and he says it's amazing how much they increased in quality and that you can get a very good model for so cheap. Or borrow one from a friend if you want.
Additionally you can use GuitarTuna for tuning it and Yousician for learning how to play. You can use the free version of Yousician which offers 30 minutes of guided sessions each day which imo is enough.
If you start practicing and in case you ever get frustrated, put the guitar aside and pick it up the next day. Even if you think you're making no progress, it's suprising to see the next day that chords are easier than the day before.

I use this app to tune my guitar and bass. (Though I payed for the full version, the basic version should work for you to get standard tuning) I don't know if it's on iPhone if you use that.
Look for guitartuna on android/ios it's made by the guitarbots people. Has mini games like guess the chord etc and listens via mic to allow you to play the "play this chord" style games

Actually there’s a ton of apps for Android and iPhone, or tablets that can act as a metronome or tuner. I use my phone a lot as a metronome. Just type In “metronome” in the search box and a few different choices are available for you. Same with tuners.
My favorite tuner is guitar guitar tuna
Don’t have to waste a bunch of money that way on fancy equipment.
Remember modern day cell phones are like 20-30x more than the computing power nasa had to put people on the moon in the 60s. Take advantage of that. With a mic and a speaker it’s easily capable acting as a tuner or making a tic sound accurately timed to a specific bpm.
Assuming you have a smart phone that is. It’s fine if you don’t I just thought I’d point that out Incase you did.
That's awesome! A tip if you don't know it yet: there are great phone apps that help you to tune the guitar, e.g.
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ovelin.guitartuna&hl=en
iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/guitartuna-guitar-bass-tuner/id527588389
Get a dedicated clip-on tuner AND a tuning app. I recommend a tuning app because the one I use has a feature that helps with tuning when you install brand new strings, however, they are not as accurate as a dedicated tuning thing.
JustinGuitar.com for guitar learning stuff. The best IMO.
As for the amp, every band is basically different. Some use high mids, some use low mids. My advice would be to get high gain(around 8-9), and mess with the "middle" knob until you find a sound you like, I recommend messing around with mids first as it affects the sound the most. Then fine tune it with bass and treble. That's how I go at least.

If you're interested in learning, the app Guitar Tuner by Guitar Tuna has a really decent beginners course put together. It can be frustrating at times with the app missing when you strike the correct cord or note, but it's good for a free service.
If you have a smartphone there are many guitar tuners that are easy for beginners to use.
Even though I bought a really nice cheap snark tuner for about $10. The first time I did my strings I used Guitar Tuner Free - GuitarTuna on my android phone
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ovelin.guitartuna&hl=en
It lets you pick your head style and you can tune each string in order starting with the thick E string. Realtime feedback with high or low so you know which direction to tune.
The snark tuner I bought is similar but clips onto your guitar head and is more accurate. But if your a newbie like me, I felt more comfortable starting with the app. Once I had it roughly in tune the first time I stopped using the app and just use the Snark tuner for checking and adjusting each session.
The method above takes away a lot of the guesswork and your unlikely to break a string unless there is something mechanically wrong with your guitar. Like a sharp edge on a saddle or something.
I got a guitar 2 years ago, tried so hard, pretty much forced myself and then gave up. Came back a month ago, picked it up, had some fun with it and learned how to play guitar in a week. My mind understood how it worked. I just played the chords mostly. Alot of great songs just use simple C G D E-minor chords.
What also helped was getting the GuitarTuna app.
Anyways, my TLDR story is that it's not about giving up and some things in life are about timing or the moment. It's about letting go sometimes and accepting that. If you go back to it that means you really love it.
Things I wish I knew before learning guitar was:
I'll think of more as they come into my head over time.
The best tuner for Android which I've (as absolute guitar newbie) came across is GuitarTuna.
Apps are fine. I personally use:

Here is a reference to Music Memos so people know what you are talking about: http://www.apple.com/music-memos/ http://www.theverge.com/2016/1/20/10797250/apple-music-memo-app-announced-iphone-ipad-free https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSDCbXGIovM
Do you want the easy to record feature, or the backing chords feature of this app. For just the recording, one of our apps allows recording by pressing Power button 3 times - even when screen is off.
Music Memos includes a guitar tuner - for that you can use Guitar Tuna: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ovelin.guitartuna
For auto-detection of notes and transcription, there are the apps by Smule: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=smule
Here is something which may be similar to the auto transcription feature: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.musicroquis.hum_on
There are some other apps on Google Play for auto-transcribing - but they have very low ratings, which may suggest they don't work as well.
The F310 plays perfectly well, but it definitely sounds like a student instrument. The big difference is the top - the FG800 has a solid spruce top and a sophisticated bracing system, while the F310 uses a laminate top with simpler bracing. The FG800 sounds richer, more balanced and has better sustain.
It's entirely your decision, but I think you'll be happy with the FG800 for longer, particularly if you get into fingerstyle playing. If you're on a tight budget, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with the F310 - it's a perfectly good guitar, you just might outgrow it sooner than the FG800.
If you're just starting out, the only accessories you really need are some picks and a good quality tuner. The tuner is optional, because there are lots of good smartphone apps. Avoid cheap unbranded tuners, because they're inaccurate and unreliable - stick with a Snark clip-on or a smartphone app to avoid frustration.
You'll want a case if you're taking your guitar to lessons or jam sessions, but I'd strongly recommend a hard case rather than a gig bag. Soft padded bags are fine for electrics, but they don't provide enough protection for acoustics. If you're just playing at home, a case is optional as long as you've got somewhere safe to keep your guitar - under the bed is a good choice.
Regarding learning material, everyone around here recommends JustinGuitar and for good reason. He's a fantastic teacher, he covers everything from total novice to expert and it's all completely free.
Ultimate Guitar App and GuitarTuna as a tuner.
That is what I bought when I started last year. The guitar is fine for learning on, but I eventually decided to get a new amp (arrives tomorrow). I also got the Snark SN-5 tuner, which is cheap and works well, and a tuning app for my phone. I also got Rocksmith 2014, which is a fun way to practice. For actual lessons, justinguitar.com is great.
I recommend also getting some extra strings - this is what I got. You'll have to change them at some point and my high E string on that guitar broke shortly after I received it.
Hm, idk how to define what a tuner does other than that it helps your strings sound proper. For example, if your guitar is out of tune and you play a C note, it will either sound too low or too high. Then you tune the guitar so that it sounds like how a proper C should sound.
Also I found that GuitarTuna is available for Android!
