Is self-promotion allowed? I am a independent game developer in my spare time. Only released one game to date on the google play store. It's a unique take on snooker/pool, it's free to download, no microtransactions etc. but does have some ads (I know ads can be annoying but you have to try to make money somehow!). Here is the link if anyone is interested.
What is your view on ads? I am a part time app developer who released my first game a few months back. It is free to play but I would never put microtransactions in my games. I do however have ads on it. I have a single banner ad that is on menu screens and a single fullscreen ad that appears upon exiting the app. I think the banner ad is fine but the full screen ad is a bit intrusive. When I get free time I plan on doing an update that makes the fullscreen ad optional, you can turn it off or keep it on for a small reward. So what is your opinion on ads within free games or would you prefer to outright buy a game for like 99c or whatever?
Edit: Link to the game if anyone is interested, I know reddit generally tends to hate self promotion unless you're a famous celebrity promoting your latest work but as a guy with zero funds I have to take every opportunity available.
Notch is also the reason why I got into making video games! I however was 22 at the time and am now 24. I published my first game just over a year ago and have gotten maybe 500 downloads since that time (Family and bugging people on the internet!) which is much more than I ever imagined. It is great you got started so young, having a app published will make it so much easier to find a job as a software developer which will help fund your hopefully successful indie game development career!
Your game is pretty fun and amazing for your first one! It's very hard which may intimidate some casual mobile gamers but I personally like the difficulty aspect. Maybe you could have a diffculty settings allowing people to limit asteroids? Also on my phone there is a slight GUI issue. On the main menu the credit button is halfway off the bottom of the screen (see screenshot here) and there is no way to exit the game. I assume the exit button is below the credits button so I have no way of clicking it. Possibly an issue with scaling to different phone sizes? My screen is relatively small (Samsung S3 mini).
Here is a link to my game if you are interested in checking it out, I appreciate any feedback because the only piece I have really got is my mom telling me it's the best thing since sliced bread but I know she has no idea how to even play it and she has to say stuff like that haha. Keep up the good work buddy and I wish you the best of luck!
lol technically I am an indie game developer because I released a stupid game on the play store. Hopefully one day I will have enough technical knowledge and money to make some better games.
Edit: Here is the game if anyone is interested, it's based off the game of pool/snooker, free to play, no microtransctions but it has ads unfortunately.
It's a game based on pool/snooker, it's a unqie take on this game so it's unlike all the other pool games out there. Just to be completely honest about the game, it's free to download but has zero-micro transactions. It does have ads, a banner ad that appears on menu screens and a single fullscreen ad that appears upon exiting the app. I'm currently working on a small update to make this fullscreen ad optional so you can turn it off or keep it on for a small reward. Yeah sure - Link, it's not that great to be honest but it was the first game I ever made.
Will do, here is a link to the first game I made as well if you are interested.
