I've only started using it recently on desktop and for me, it is proving to be a good alternative to Google Maps. My only issue is finding a good Android app that uses OSM.
Not to threadjack, but was wondering how r/privacy felt about Magic Earth for an OSM app. I currently use Here WeGo for its offline maps and search, but Magic Earth seems to handle those better. I'm just not sure how better/worse it handles user privacy. I don't like how it asks for more permissions than Here, especially the contacts permissions (which I made sure stayed disabled). I've tried Maps.Me and OsmAnd and had many issues with both. Magic Earth is the first OSM app I've tried that ticks all of my boxes.
Magic Earth is a privacy respecting map app. It uses open street map data and just provides realtime navigation. Only downside besides osm being very incomplete is its proprietary.
I'm not so sure about maps.me. Maybe have a look at Magic Earth instead?
I use Magic Earth: I think it uses open street. I love the app regardless, really good!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.generalmagic.magicearth, their moto is PRIVACY FIRST! • We do not track you. We do not profile you. We do not trade in your personal data; moreover, we do not have it. Downloadable OpenStreetMaps World wide. Driving, biking, hiking &public transportation. All Free
Gmaps Web view, same as gmaps but no navigation, you can get access to the map and navigate yourself (i use this as i like finding my own way)

MagicEarth is closed source but a better option to OSM, even calyx dudes recommend it, it takes a while to get hang of it and has navigation. (Better to use while you drive)

I've struggled with OsmAnd as I find it can be very picky with place new, addresses etc unless you're absolutely spot on.
So recently I found Magic Earth and it's been very reliable.
Magic Earth for navigation - based on OpenStreetMap. Online and offline maps, privacy-oriented, free and without ads.
You can try the Magic Earth app - it uses OpenStreetMap data. The app is free, without ads and it is very privacy-oriented. You can either use the app with internet or download the needed maps for offline use (world map included).
If you are looking for an alternative to Google Maps, you can try Magic Earth (based on OpenStreetMap data). The app is privacy-oriented, free and without ads. It has great features and accurate navigation/routing.
Magic Earth, based on OpenStreetMap data. It is free, it can be used offline and, most important, it is privacy-oriented.
I personally love magic earth (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.generalmagic.magicearth&hl=nl)
>...take a look at Magic Earth, it isn't open source but they take privacy quite seriously.
We can't verify that without source code. OsmAnd is a better option.
It doesn't defeat the purpose of using microG, but that doesn't mean it doesn't compromise your privacy. If you use microG with Google Maps as a user app (and possibly restrict permissions) you can control what it can do. Without microG by default your locaton history is stored by Google. Google should only be able to find out what you do in maps or what you do in Vanced, not control your phone.
A little warning though: although GMaps works fine on microG signing in sometimes doesn't work.
I would also recommend that you take a look at Magic Earth, it isn't open source but they take privacy quite seriously. It is pretty strong alternative to GMaps, and has features like traffic-based turn-by-turn voice navigation, very smooth 3-d maps and quite a bit more.
You could block all the trackers with likes of Netguard or as other mentioned use maps which is same without trackers (but also without traffic).
I can also recommend https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.generalmagic.magicearth&hl=en which has zero trackers and is OSM based similar to maps.me
For maps, since traffic info is important for some people. I'd like to suggest Magic Earth
It's not FOSS as far as I know, and Aurora Store reports no trackers, but it mentions no tracking, and even gave a notice before asking permission for the device's location, which you need to tab a button to enable in the first place. I am not certain how it checks for traffic, though.
It also offers OpenStreetMaps for download, but I believe that's optional.
I use Magic Earth. It's not open source but it uses OSM data and works offline.
> Is there any map app (I use osmand) for Ansroid phone, that looks at your location with existing POI, or placea you stay for at least few minutes (so it is probably POI and not a road) and asks questions (similar to Google maps) about places, like shops, restaurants, coffee shops, or suggest to add photos, opening hours, website URL, etc. And does osm have any way to add and the search for companies, shops, etc by name? I often want to go somewhere, and all osmand accepts is the address, not places name (i.e. shop name).
To use OSM data in a drop-in, feature complete and then some, replacement for Google Maps on Android, I recommend Magic Earth.
For more advanced users who want to contribute back to OSM as well as consume it, I use Osmand as my default map app, and it does reasonably well. If that doesn't work, for whatever reason, I'll use AddressToGPS to ask Google's geocode, and A2G will take those geocoordinates and open Osmand so I can get actually good driving, bicycling or walking directions. And once I arrive and can see it in person, I'll use Osmand to drop a new POI and upload it on the spot so I (and anyone else using OSM) don't have to resort to two different toolchains in the future.
Magic Earth has a 'parking' button, but all it does is search areas tagged as parking.
Magic Earth is a pretty good (free) car navigation, can plan way longer routes than OsmAnd.
Mapy.CZ is also excellent for car (or general) navigation, also with Android Auto support. Their webpage (not too suprisingly mapy.cz) is also very useful for hiking route planning.
merretekerjek.hu ("where shall I cycle") is only available in Hungarian but it is an excellent way to plan cycle (or actually hiking) routes. It may be outdated now though...
Thanks, found it and will check it out!
my current maps alternative is magic earth
Magic Earth is a great offline app, with 3D terrain (use OpenStreetMaps)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.generalmagic.magicearth
This comparison made it their top pick: http://valutronic.com/gps-e.html
I also use Offline GPS (which uses Tom Tom maps)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gps.navigation.maps.route.directions
which is their second pick (I had arrived at these choices myself before I found that article, for what it is worth).
I will also mention OsmAnd, although I would describe that as a map app that can do navigation rather than a traditional satnav (no isometric view, screen updates are rather jerky when navigating, etc.). I use it when I want a more detailed, topo-map-like view of what is around me (with the right plugin you get contours and hill-shading), but rarely when I am just driving somewhere.
Magic earth pour ma part, mais comme le dis le commentaire précédent, tu perds le côté communautaire.
Magic Earth is what i choose
If you're going to go without gapps, I would install F-Droid and Aurora Store and here's what I would use:
Only thing is you'll only get notifications when not using gapps for:
This can either be good or bad depending on how you view it.
Magic Earth perhaps? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.generalmagic.magicearth
Or you can just use Magic Earth download your entire country and use it w/o internet
Whatsapp works just fine and the only issue about Maps is that you can't access your account (and I mean there are also Magic Earth, Here We Go and OsmAnd).
Magic Earth - free, privacy-oriented, it has both online and offline maps (based on OSM)
For navigation, try Magic Earth
If you are looking for a navigation app, you can try Magic Earth - it uses OpenStreetMap data.
The Magic earth app, link here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.generalmagic.magicearth
Maybe try Magic Earth. It's Open Source and it uses Open Streets Maps just like OSMand+.
Magic Earth is my favourite.

This comparison really liked it:too.
Magic Earth easier to set than OSMAnd+.
Here is the maps application: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.generalmagic.magicearth&hl=en
Try Magic Earth, it uses OSM data but the experience is almost similar to Apple Maps.
