They're removing Moto Assist and the Moto connect chrome extension - and these are the two major features that have driven my decision to buy Moto phones (along with battery life).
In particular, the Moto Assist 'speak to me' and automatic detection of driving mode is NOT duplicated well on any other phone. Does M provide this feature, or will I lose it?
If you read the reviews of Assist, you'll see people LOVE it and many folks say its the reason they stick with Moto. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.contextual.smartrules2&hl=en
WTF Moto, are you trying to make me an iPhone or Samsung user?
My (2013) Moto X uses Moto Assist for all of this.
The phone does all the heavy lifting, the car stereo is basically a bluetooth speaker at this point.
Ok, Techie time.
It's rare, but this is one of those "Android did it better" times. /bias
If she's got an Android there are a few Apps for it already.
If she's got an iPhone though...
So the iPhone is a sandboxed environment, which means that no commercially available App can actually do what we're talking about doing. There are a few that can detect motion / speed and send push notifications to not drive distracted etc but then the phone is going off in the car and given her distractions are phone based, that's probably not the way to go.
There is a solution.
You need to Jailbreak her device. It's a simple procedure and it's safe and reversible. Just do a quick iTunes backup first in case you have to restore the device. Once Jailbroken you'll find an App called Cydia, it's an App store or sorts with a number of tweaks to do all manner of cool or silly or, potentially, dangerous things. So use it with care.
I spent a bit of time looking but couldn't find a specific tweak. /r/jailbreak has a few discussions related to it but nothing concrete. Nor do any of my iPhone / Jailbreak blogs. Tweeted a few people in the industry, well see if they have a line on something.
There are a few iOS / Android Apps here that apparently do a pretty good job. A few of them couple with hardware that's installed into the car, which seems like the most reliable way of telling your phone it's moving in a vehicle.
Canary seems particularly worthwhile as it's targeted at parents of children who have just learned to drive. And since your wife's behavior in the car is certainly childlike...
Hope that helps. I'll update the post if I hear of a good always-on Cydia tweak.
