But hasn't the Snapdragon 800 and later been tracking steps anyway? Google Fit already does this, and iPhones have been able to measure steps since the 5s without massive drain.
Where it gets stupid is that Google Fit INSITS on using your location to track your steps. I mean that's great if you combine the step counter with location information to generate some useful information like in my Google Location dashboard or how the Moves App did things before /r/android hated it for being acquired by Facebook, but how about giving me an option to use my fitness tracking as a pure dumb step counter without adding additional drain using my location?
That's the idea, it simply runs in the background and tracks your movements. Moves is pretty similar, I used it a for a few weeks and it did a nice job of describing your day's activities, walking or biking.
Current Idea: One possibility I was thinking was basically copying the base premise of this app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.protogeo.moves&hl=en) and then building on top of it (like shareable summary views, adding a social aspect of it, exporting it into an instagram friendly image)
There is a program called "Moves" for iOS that I use to count steps. It is fantastic. The interface is very simple, minimalistic, beautiful and most importantly has all the functions required of a step counter.
It doesn't let you take notes, but Moves is fantastic about tracking your movements and showing it in a simple, pretty, readable interface. You can name the spots you've stopped at and it remembers them when you spend time there the next time. It works in the background counting your steps and barely drains the battery.
They were bought out by Facebook though, if that makes you uneasy, that's another thing.
I use Moves for this kind of thing.

It tracks your movement including cycling distance
Could you please try Moves and tell me if it works (i.e. tracks movements in the background)?
