> To actually play music, I use mocp from command-line - just point it to a directory, and it plays it (this is the feature that can be really hard to find in smartphone music players, with all their "databases" and "collections").
Nice project, and always great to tinker with these things yourself, but in this case I'd like to highlight the awesome Music Folder Player for Android devices. Does what it says, and what you describe - I've been using it for years for audiobooks as well as music.
How do you plan to move on the GSM front? That's arguably the most phone-like feature of a phone, otherwise you've just got a glorified MP3 player. Integrate a GSM module, or continue using a USB dongle for now?
The app muting media has been a "bug" for maybe about 2 years. I dunno if NIAOPS ever explain why they changed that suddenly but you can use another music player that can ignore these control (I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.zorillasoft.musicfolderplayer&hl=en)
Try this out - Folder Music Player: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.zorillasoft.musicfolderplayer&hl=en
The app uses a folder based approach for playing music.. It also has a built-in audio equilizer and has tonne of features such as custom playlists.
The app gets updates and has an active dev. I think he uses Google Plus.
Did I mention its free as well?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.zorillasoft.musicfolderplayer this one has a great equalizer and some effects like speed and pitch but I think not echo.
What I like about this player is that it keeps the music files in their folders and play following this structure, more or less like a music player in a car.
I don't really know if it works offline or anything. But this is the music player I've been using for a while now and I think it's great!

Well I like using this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.zorillasoft.musicfolderplayer . If this helps? It's called "Music Folder Player Free" by ZorillaSoft.
I think they're great!

That does soISH, but it's in the notification bar, and the app is pretty buggy for me these days.
Music Folder Player Excellent easy to use but deep music player specialized in displaying and playing your folder structure rather than organizing your music with regards to ID-tags.
I started out like you, but along the way I found that properly tagged files are worth it in the long run. There is just much more information that you can store in tags than in file and directory names. I also have song and album titles with umlaut characters (German and French) which can be a pain when you move between Windows, Linux and Android.
However, searching for 'android music place file path' I can across this player, which may be what you need:

There's some really great playlist and mp3 tagging apps out there. I've always been partial to "Music Folder Player" or "N7"
> Vanilla music (I love folder browsing).
That's my preferences too. I spent lots of time organizing my folders, naming my mp3s... just the way I like them:-)
I installed Vanilla Music just now and played around with it for a bit. Small size, wicked fast, lots of configuration options. Very nice. How do you exit the player? I had to go into AppManager to force close - like the old days:-(
Currently using the closed source and ad-supported, Music Folder Player Free (n/a for this thread as a suggestion). Does a great job but always looking for open source alternatives when I can.
I use "Music Folder Player" for audiobooks. My audiobooks are organized in folders and "Music Folder Player" stores the last played location for each folder.

If you want basic, reliable and bare-bones, then Music Folder Player might be worth a go. It scans your specified music folders for any mp3s or you can choose to just use a folder view like a file manager. It also has 2 sets of forward/back seek buttons that can be set for a specific amount of seconds and a specific percentage - which is great for podcasts. It ran well on an old Samsung for me a few months ago, so I assume it'll be fine on the Droid.

Edit: Play store bot only found the paid version, this is the free one.
does this app help ?
Want to plug a few apps that I have found to love and have put on every phone I have ever owned. All are odd ones that few seem to care about, but if you have the need, these can be lifesavers.
Music Folder Player is hands down the best player I have ever had. I collect a lot of audio books, and each one is in its own folder. So the ability to play a single folder at a time without mixing them all up in invaluable. And as an added bonus, I have set up folders with playlists for work, exercise, relaxing, and so on. check it out, and if you like it, grab the pay version to support an under appreciated need in the play store.
Lumiya possibly the only decent second life viewer for android. if you have any pleasure in second life, this lets you in while mobile. a very nitch need, but a welcome one indeed
Work Shifts I work retail and the hours can change from week to week, often with radical changes. so the ability to jot down my shifts quickly and easily is a must. The free version can create common shifts if you work the same one several time a week, the pay version can keep track of weeks past in case there are any problems. Both worth the effort for retail workers.
Pocketcasts Is hands down the best pod catcher I have ever found. Given I have to drive for about a half hour to work each day, as well as have to spend time in wanting rooms sometimes for hours a week, the ability to listen to podcasts and keep track across multiple devices even onto my pc, and even help find new ones I might have missed, makes it worth the money hands down.
TV time given my hectic schedule, I often don't get to watch TV for days as a time, and with shows all over the place, on hulu, netflix, broadcast TV and shows coming and going through the year, its hard to keep track, but tv time allows me to make lists of shows I watch, and it will alert me when something new is available. and if I miss it,easy to go back and check out what was on over the last week.
Music folder player has many editable buttons for skipping: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.zorillasoft.musicfolderplayer

Have you tried 'Music Folder Player'? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.zorillasoft.musicfolderplayer
It's a very decent player, I use it for my audiobooks because you can set up custom skip buttons. There's also a Pro version without ads.
