Free NES emulator + Original game files you find on your own = Better "free" product?
Plus most emulators support a slew of neat free features like save-states, rewind, cheats, use of Bluetooth and the like physical controllers wirelessly.
I use Nostalgia.NES for NES emulation and SNES9X EX+ for SNES emulation. Both of them are malware-free.
In general, try to stick to Play Store stuff and FOSS, and you'll avoid malware.
It's Nostalgia.NES if you're interested. I definitely think that it's the best free NES emulator, but NES.emu is the absolute best for Android.
I use this app on my Android (SAMSUNG) phone: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nostalgiaemulators.neslite
It's not the same as playing with an original controller, but for strategic games vs. the computer like "North and South" (even though that one requires some practice with a touchpad when you are on the battlefield) and "Spy vs. Spy", it's super fun!
I haven't found any good app on the iPhone yet.
Nostalgia.NES works a treat. And yeah I grabbed all the NES roms from emuparadise (literally all of them - only a few hundred MB, haha) and just dug out the ones I wanted after digging around on NES/co-op forums for the best recommendations.
Retroarch isn't great, at least on Android. It's just a kludgy front end for a bunch of other emulator "engines," which do the actual emulation.
Nostalgia.NES has always been my goto for NES emulation on Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nostalgiaemulators.neslite&hl=en

Most of those are free, but some have a paid version. The only that is completely paid is ePSXe.

Do yourself a favor and just get Nostalgia.NES (NES Emulator)
Try Nostalgia NES (free version), the Robert Borgalia NES app (only paid), Lemuroid (free), or a NES RetroArch core (free). RetroArch has a learning curve and millions of settings but honestly is great. Lemuroid is RetroArch cores without millions of settings. Easier to use. And like RetroArch, it has more than just NES. The .emu app is a RetroArch core in app form to my knowledge. Pretty easy to use. Dude makes great apps but almost all are paid except for the SNES one. But to answer your question, I don't know. I just know John emulator's aren't the best so try something else
