You should really just google this for a better explanation, but ok.
Think of a barcode. It's a load of lines that can be read by a barcode reader. In reality, it's a load of numbers, used to identify the product. The barcode just makes it easy to read by a machine.
Someone got that and messed around with it a bit and now we have a black and white square with loads of cubes in it and a square in one corner. This is a QR code. It has the same function as a barcode, but is cable of containing not just numbers, but text too. Mobile phones can download an app that let's then scan these QR codes and see what they contain.
Some are simply web link, others small strings of text, others contain contact details.
There seems to be a sort of agreed upon format, so some can even contain wifi network details. The format looks something like WIFI:T:WPA;S:mynetwork;P:mypass;; where T is the authentication type, S is the network name, P is the password, and H is if it's hidden.
You don't need to know this format by memory because most QR code generator tools just prompt you for the details and generate the QR code anyway. On android I like to use QRDroid as it also includes all the tools to generate them.
Once you have a QR code made, you just print it off and stick it wherever.
> Do you really nees a different app?
The better 3rd-party barcode scanner apps, like QR Droid can do a lot more than just read QR codes. They can also create QR codes for a multitude of phone tasks and features, like WiFi password, app transfers, text messages, location, URL links, phone number, etc.
> If QR reader is built in on many OEM camera apps, then why are these crappy QR apps so popular?!
Because the better ones, like QR Droid can do a lot more than read QR codes. It can also create QR codes by turning phone files, apps and productivity tasks into QR codes.
Too late now, but ...
You can backup the authenticator secret; it is just a text string of the form
'otpauth://totp/EVEOnline:account_name?secret=xxx...xxx&issuer=EVEOnline'
Use any trustworthy QR code reader app to capture it (I use QR Droid for Android).
I keep mine in the 'notes' section of my Password Safe. I keep the encrypted 'safe' on my GDrive. I re-display it using the 'qrencode' utility (don't use an online site!).
Another method is to take a photo of the QR code, and put it somewhere secure, like a USB stick in a safe. Make sure to delete the photo from the camera, and don't auto-upload to the cloud!
QR Droid can make a QR code image of your WiFi credentials (which you must supply), that allows others to access your WiFi by scanning that QR image.
While this method is useful for no-brainer logins, the credentials within those QR codes can be easily revealed with available software.
QR Droid Code Scanner is the one I've used. You provide the network credentials and it creates a WiFi barcode from that. It can also read a WiFi barcode for login. Very easy to use.
Others have reported on Android's unreliable restore of WiFi credentials, especially if you've changed ROMs or previously wiped your phone. It appears that 3rd party WiFi backup/restore apps need root.
I've backed up my WiFi credentials by creating a QR code for each one and having the other phone scan each barcode. QR Droid Code Scanner can scan all the WiFi networks for you and selectively convert them to barcodes.
Too bad! I haven't tried it yet myself, but apparently QR Droid and Barcode Scanner still win, then.
Qr Droid and Qr Droid Private are QR Code reading apps that are free and ad free. I regularly use QR droid private to open links from my Desktop's browser on my phone. We should really use QR codes more often, they're incredibly useful and simple to create.
Habit Bull is a habit creation assistance app that I feel offers more wiggle room in your habit definitions than other apps.
Songza is a Music streaming app that offers you different themed selections at different times of different days, however you can always select whichever genre you want if you simply go into the overflow menu. It's completely free but ad supported. I use it for runs because I don't have an iTunes collection.
Utter! is a voice controlled personal assistant that can do way more than I can explain in text. Ever since I got Utter I've used voice control for just about everything, and I don't think I can go back to doing it the old way.
Lastly, Chromatik is a great sheet music app that offers you a wide selection of sheet music for a growing number of songs.
They're all free! Who needs a link bot, I did all this on my phone. =D
Edit: I forgot to mention News Republic, it offers news from several dozen sources with keyword-based sorting, an extremely customizable tile based interface, night mode, the option to save the article for later to read offline, the ability to automatically download suggested articles for offline reading, the ability to suggest articles based on what you read, and a fair bit more. You can't add your own sources, but they do add more from time to time and you can disable them yourself if you don't want to view that website's content. If a keyword exists you can create a feed for it.
This app creates them for free:

I am not the dev or involved with them in any way. just a user.
QR Droid Code Scanner https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=la.droid.qr&hl=en
Have you tried QRDroid?
Bixby is the slowest QR reader i've ever used. Try QR Droid (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=la.droid.qr&hl=en) which is free and lightning fast
There are qr readers out there that can scan images on your phone. I'm not sure which ones are best. QR Droid is one I know of though.
It's a Data Matrix code. Most barcode and QR code scanner apps (like QR Droid or ZXing) can read these. It probably just contains a nondescript number identifying the lot and not much interesting stuff.
Each Google Authenticator account had to have been created with either a QR code or secret key, either of which you should have saved for restoring you accounts. Google Authenticator accepts either one to restore an account.
QR Droid Code Scanner can extract each account's secret key from its QR code, or can create a QR code from a given secret key.
