I use an app called quick for wear instead https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.michy.quickforwear
It allows a view of the whole conversation, quick replies, a breath between dictation (so you can press the microphone multiple times and send at your own leisure instead of all at once ) and use of a keyboard, so also emojis. I love it.
In the GMail app on your phone, under settings > [] > Inbox sound & Vibrate, make sure that 'Notify for every message' is unchecked (you'll still be notified when messages come in, but if three come in at once, or if you've still got outstanding notifications when another comes in, you'll only get a single notification/vibration)
Also: QuickForWear - yeah, its all about putting a keyboard on the watch, but it intercepts notifications in order to add a reply feature, and it handles the vibrations as you'd expect them to be handled.
There's also Quick for Wear which I've been using for a while, works really well. I've just hidden WhatsApp and Hangouts messages on my watch and use this instead.
Quick for Wear allows you to use a keyboard as well. Perhaps you can use it for a voice reply and then edit the words you want to change?
