To be fair, "pocket calculator" for 8-year-olds today includes a Pixel XL with something like this loaded, so neither of you are wrong. :-)
If you're wanting something with a "scientific mode," I've come to swear by Real Calc.
There's a free version and a paid one.
RealCalc Plus. It's really a great classic-looking calculator. I use it all the time--I teach chemistry. I used RealCalc free version for awhile and decided to support the developers. Solid app.
Thanks for the suggestions. I did some more looking before I saw these messages and I found RealCalc Plus.

I had no problem paying the developer because it's exactly what I needed. There might be other good ones for free too, but this works for me.
I haven't used the stock calculator in many years. Try RealCalc. It's simple, yet advanced if you need it. Classic-looking LCD display.

That's the Plus version. There's a free version, too, I'm sure. I paid for Plus because it's so awesome.
In terms of scientific calculators, somewhere in my house is the Casio scientific calculator I had from Middle School through high school. I really want to find it. In the meantime, the RealCalc app has always been my favorite calculator app that emulates the functionality of the calculator that I know I'd somewhere in my home. Someday I will reunite with it.
Never underestimate a venerable classic! 🤓❤🖩
If it's any consolation, I think every OEM ruins the clock, it's not a Samsung-specific problem at all. Sony saw fit to only allow you one countdown timer at once (which as an added bonus you can't dismiss without unlocking the phone), and changed all the nice functional keypad inputs throughout the app for horrible spin controls so it takes five times as long to enter anything.
As for the calculator, I gave up on that years ago. Realcalc was always the answer to that question.
RealCalc has this function
I use this one:
Yep.
I use RealCalc Plus by Quartic Software on Android.
I love Realcalc Plus, so many uses plus it has a wide array of conversions.
My go to calculator is RealCalc Plus:
