I like realm defense. It's a tower defense game and you level up heroes who have special abilities. There are some features that benefit from internet but the core game play is all offline.

This is not about the app update, but about downloading game data everytime you change worlds (or start the tournament etc.). This has been introduced in the latest update: "Download new world assets only when necessary to reduce disk usage"
I've been playing these tower defense games for some time and can guarantee that they are as enjoyable as kingdom rush series
