It's not officially possible but, you can do it with third party apps.
I use Slideshow for Picasa - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.dip.mukacho.picasadaydream
but, fairly sure that in the past I've also used PhotoGuru Media Browser - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cmpsoft.MediaBrowser
There's a new app called Slideshow for Picasa that allows you to use your own photos for Daydream. I literally JUST downloaded this so I haven't tested it out yet.
Yup! If you have an Android TV, you can install this useful app. You can link it with your Google Photos account and it'll display a random slideshow of photos from your account.
Like others here, Gallery & Screensaver is my first recommendation. I've read your issues with it, and can suggest:
Double check - b/c paying for the screensaver, and paying for the gallery (picture viewer), are two different payments, to different orders.
Also - maybe recheck the settings, they are very wonky and it's not always clear what albums you've selected.
The dev's website and address are on the play page: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.dip.mukacho.picasadaydream&hl=en_US&gl=US
Doesn't mean they're responding to those addresses though, of course.
~~Finally- Maybe check out Slideshow for Google Photos~~ Never mind, that's for Google Photos only. Although if you were willing to move your photos to Google photos this might work. I recently discovered this app and quite like it. I'm evaluating it next to G&S to see which works better. Slideshow does have a limit of how many pics it'll use on free, and a pretty wonky way of pulling pics from different albums though.
I am pretty sure you can't on non-Chromecast devices.
On both my Nexus Player and my Shield I've never seen the option in backdrop settings (using the Google Cast app) to use my own photos. However it's there for an actual Chromecast I have.
I assume it's the same for the Mi Box.
That said, you are not limited to using the built in backdrop on your Android TV.
Here's what you do:
Go to http://photos.google.com and upload the photos you want to use for your backdrop. If they're already there, great. Select all the photos you want to use and place them in a new album.
Name it whatever you want.
Once you have your photos in an album, install this app to your Mi Box:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.dip.mukacho.picasadaydream&hl=en
Now after it is installed, from your home screen on your device, navigate to Settings -> Daydream
You should now see a new 'Slideshow for Picasa' option. Click on it.
Click on 'Select Albums'
Click on your Google account
Now all your albums that you've created in google photos are shown. Select which album you want to make as your backdrop. You can select multiple albums.
Navigate back out of the album selection screen and fiddle with the customization options if you want. Like enabling the clock (not necessary though).
Scroll to the bottom and click 'Finish'
Scroll down and click 'Start now' to immediately start the daydream (so you can test that it's working).
That's it. All your album pics will be used now instead of the regular backdrop.
I use an app called Slideshow for Google Photos to cycle through a Google Photos folder of wallpapers.
You can use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.dip.mukacho.picasadaydream
You can use this app to have your own photos as backdrop.

I downloaded Slideshow for Picasa
I downloaded Slideshow for Picasa. It does the job, but it's not very fancy. Wished it had a little more functionality.
The app I use is Slideshow for Google Photos for a photo type screensaver

500px – Photo Sharing & Photography Community https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fivehundredpx.viewer
So the only options are what then... just these two? Anyone know which one works the best? Do these function similar to the native google photos ambient mode in chromecast?
