Ah, like that. Well, I completely agree with that point of view; I also hate using the phone for these tasks.
Having said that, I think we're mixing up two different points:
And I think both are true, because people read the news on their phone while going to work in the bus or train, and you can fill in the other examples. That's also what the data shows. With that in mind, when it is a given that someone is already on mobile, is the on-line activity most likely to be on an app or in the browser?
Regarding that, I would say the bigger issue overshadowing all of this is companies undermining the open web with both websites and apps that do their best to ensure that you leave their playground, with Facebook leading the charge. And apps are worse here, and IMO to be avoided at all costs.
(For example, although I should probably ditch Facebook altogether, for now I use SlimSocial for general browsing, and Notifications for Facebook to deal with message notifications)
It's called a dark pattern. Facebook, especially Messenger, uses it everywhere. The unique Facebook notification tone, the sounds it plays when you send a message, the sound it makes when you press and hold the like button, it showing a notification badge on the account overview icon (even though you haven't received a single message). If you must use Facebook, use some other app for it like SlimSocial.
Use lighter and open source alternatives like SlimSocial or Hermit
I use SlimSocial on my phone and have it set to "most recent". Since it's just a wrapper for the mobile site, that means that as long as I open the app once a day, the setting persists in on my laptop too.
I've switched to SlimSocial app ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.rignanese.leo.slimfacebook ) in combination with official Messenger app. Facebook app just made my phone slow. Not unusable but noticeably - like when trying to do some multitasking - browser, FB app and Messenger, copying links and photos from one to another or simply browsing... It's all much better without official FB app.
Sure, it's not the same, UI is different, not "animated", not that fancy... But in the end - i can actually do what i need. I can post, share, comment, public and send photos, tag people etc.
My phone is still not THAT bad, it's Moto G 1st gen. And still - FB app was the biggest app on my phone and it was the biggest battery eater. Another thing is - i've been in FB beta program for over a year and it's just ridiculous how they treat users and how they "make it better". For over a year and for like 30 big number versions - changes were cosmetical and there were so many errors and bugs... It's just not worth it.
BUT i understand that people with much better and faster phones may not feel the need for any alternative. On my wife's S5 Neo it's all flawless with official aps.
