I would have preferred the dark theme too but, at least, this is a start. If you have root, you can use substratum to get some cool themes like MAGPIE.
I believe Magpie is pretty good. Also I'm not sure if you mentioned this but Team blackout does some pretty nice skinned apps.
Magpie lets you build your own theme, you can select your own primary and accent colors. there are even translucent and gradient options if you're into that sorta thing.
im using an OLED device though so i'm all bout the blacked out life, swift black.
I like Magpie. It offers a lot of customizations and has a plug in for tons of different colors (The Colors).
The theme offers four different bases, I think that the Dark base meets your criteria. The theme is paid, but is well worth the money. I believe it is only $1.00 or $1.50.
Check out Magpie, made by the same developer and there is a plugin that you can use to mix and match different colors to different parts of the UI. Costs $1.50, worth every penny.
Also you only seem to need root when initially installing the theme, and you need busybox installed as well.
I disabled root after theming (I'm using the MAGPIE theme + the colors addon) so I could use Android Pay and so far it's working fantastic.

Is this the app you're referring to?
It is a combination of Magpie and Colors. Magpie is the base theme and then you choose what accent colors you want from The Colors layers. You get the option of doing a full theme, primary color, or accent color. The Magpie theme is $.99, but is very much worth it. The Nav keys are from a different layer called TimberWolf (made from the same developer).
You'll need root for these.
I use the latest build of Magpie which uses Substratum. In order to get the blackest theme possible I use this setup:
Base: BaseDark
Primary Colour: others_Black
Accent Colour: Soft_Grey
Background Colour: Black
For battery saving I use the Pure Nexus ROM with the ElementalX Kernel with is using the DarkSpice profile.
For battery saving I used three apps, Amplify, Greenify and Power Nap. I used this guide to set them up.
As for homescreen I made mine very basic as was shown, I use the CLock which is included in Pure Nexus and have resized it to hide the date, for icons I use Whicons.
Magpie with the Synergy style is pretty great if you like blue-tinted accents.
I use Magpie Layers - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.setiawanjimmy.TheMagpie&hl=en
You'll need to do a little search as to how to install them. Mainly rooting, installing busybox and the layers manager.
