That being said, there are some developers for Android that are leveraging the Wi-Fi functionality these cameras have to deliver expanded features via a connection to another device.
Here is one such example for a timelapse app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thibaudperso.sonycamera
I haven't gotten a chance to use it yet so I can't comment on how well it works but the reviews look ok.
I've previously used an Android app to do a timelapse.
It interacts with the standard Smart remote app, so doesn't need anything extra, and it's free.

Another option for time lapse, which I know does work with the NEX-6, is the Android Time Lapse app which does it over WiFi.
There is an android app that lets you do so. I have a cheapy tablet and have done some timelapses with my M2 via connecting to the app wirelessly.

Only time lapse (which I tend to swear at as much as by) and mainly with this third party timelapse app on my phone.
Part of the reason I've not bothered much with apps, other than the comment that others have made about a lot of them being things you can do in post anyway, is that it's a PITA to get them onto the camera. We use Linux here: we don't have any Windows or Mac PCs at all now. Why they, and firmware updates, can't just be installed via SD card is beyond me.
I downloaded this Time lapse app yesterday and was pretty pleased with the results. It's pretty easy to put together in Premiere pro as well.
The deciding factor for me was the fact that an intervalometer is only 10 dollars more than the app. I think the app limits your shutter speed to 30 seconds. And you can't set it precisely, the options go from 25 to 30. If you ever want to try astro photography it's useful.
There's also this free android app which works pretty well. You have to set your phone to never go into sleep mode though, and you can't use your phone while it's running.

This app works alright too

I didn't try that one yet. To be clear this is the app I was referring to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thibaudperso.sonycamera
There's no app like this

for the App Store :((
You could try Thibaud Michel's TimeLapse application. It's not perfect, but it does work:

I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but take a look at this. Seems to have no limit.

Well, fact is here, in front of my eyes.
( firmware 2.0 )
I've found a workaround: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thibaudperso.sonycamera&hl=en
There is no built in TimeLapse feature on A6000, there's none in any other Sony camera. If I recall correctly whole PlayMemories support will be dropped. Also the TimeLapse app is limited only to FullHD.
Anyways, your options would be:
But only Sony app will create a video automatically on camera, otherwise you'll have to use some sort of software to combine all the images.
