Pretty sure it is Today Calendar Pro. I highly recommend it, even though it costs a few bucks. Looks great and the widget is wonderful.
I really like Today Calendar. It has different options for how to view the month calendar and having the actual event titles is an option.
Edit: Didn't read your post right, not sure if the month widget also shows the event titles.
I actually like Google Calendar, because I like the multiple views. I use the widget's Agenda view for a quick glance at what's upcoming in the short term, and I launch the app for the month view for scheduling new events.
That said, try Today Calendar if you don't like it.

Any calendar apps to replace Today Calendar by Jack Underwood ?
I love his app, but sadly he isn't developing it anymore :(
Does anyone have any calendar app recommendations?
I've been using Today Calendar for a few years, but it hasn't been updated in a long time and the widgets are broken on Oreo.
Something similar with material design and a dark theme would be ideal.
It may be serendipity, or shrewd marketing, but Today Calendar is currently on sale. If it is shrewd marketing I definitely fell for it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.underwood.calendar&hl=en
It's a one-time payment. I believe it's currently $4.49 and it goes on sale pretty often (or it used to at least).
edit: My bad, here's the link Today Calendar Pro
I really like the G'cal app, but I hate the widget. It's just toooooo colourful and intense for my taste.
I found Today Calendar that has a great widget, with an appearance you can customise which suited my needs perfectly. If G'cal had this too, I'd definitely switch back.
I use Today Calendar Pro. There's also a free version, though I can't remember what it's missing/its limitations are.
Today Calendar Agenda Widget. Clean, customizable, and pretty. I think there's a free version. (Edit: "!")
It has a day view widget.
This was the one I was referring to, used to be a free version. Seems like the devs have abandoned it though.

I personally use Today Calendar Pro. It's not free but it fits my needs and may fit yours too!
