They're quite obvious, if you could see the box in your mirrors it would have been clear when it flashed.
In future, if you're using a headset and have an android phone, install this app, go into settings and there's an option to have it start up when you connect to the headset. It's saved my dumb ass countless times.
I ended up switching to Waze specifically for the speed limit alert after getting two tickets in two days. If you've got an android phone Tom Tom does a free overlay app for google maps tho'.
Tomtom Speed Cameras is an even better alternative. It has speed limit and a very good camera warning system. You can overlay any app.

I also used to use Velociraptor but prefer TomTom Speed Cameras over that. But as noted, probably not available in US.

TomTom is one of the biggest satnav names so you can trust it works, and it has features such as re-routing when accidents occur and warns you about speed cameras.
It's probably the closest I can find in terms of features that I like compared to GMaps
And, actually, they renamed it recently so I sent you off on a complete wild goose chase, I'm afraid!
It's this guy: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomtom.speedcams.android.map
I used to have it configured to start up when I paired my bluetooth headset with the phone, which is a neat feature. I only don't use it now because apparently I never reinstalled it when I replaced my phone.
I've also just remembered that Here Maps now doesn't do speed alerts unless it's got a route to (try to) guide you along, which is probably fantastically annoying if you use the voice directions from a satnav and don't want to have to set the right destination every time you go out.
I use TomTom Speed Cameras (recently upgraded and rebranded as TomTom AmiGO) and it's worked well for everywhere I've driven, from Uusimaa to Vaasa and all around south and central Finland. There seems to be an active community because it often also warns that a mobile unit was spotted here (X minutes ago, reported by Y users).
Seriously though, just drive within the limits. You're more likely to be pulled over by a motorbike or unmarked police vehicle and you shouldn't be speeding in any case.
TomTom has a free speed camera app that does what you're looking for.

On android, this is the best app. I still don't understand how it's free. You get a speed camera overlay and it saves your bacon a few times! (Also, it handles average speed cameras perfectly).
Waze for me looks too cartoon like and I prefer Google Maps over all so far.

For those who prefer Google Maps for directions, but want speed limits and camera warnings - just download TomTom speed camera app. It overlays a little box over the top of the screen and does everything you want! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomtom.speedcams.android.map
If you have an Android phone, there's an app by TomTom that will beep every time you approach a fixed speed/safety camera. Nothing you can do about the existing points, but you can reduce the chance that you'll get any more.
You can set it so that it automatically starts when your car's bluetooth connects.
If you're in the UK, I'd highly recommend TomTom speed cameras.
It gives you a small overlay with current speed and also cameras (wren you're 15 seconds away, so you have enough time to check your speed)

Use this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomtom.speedcams.android.map&hl=en
It overlays a small speed limit from tomtom's data. I use it all the time
OEM = Stock/Original
image = ROM/Firmware
One of the reasons I personally chose to Root, De-bloat & FireWall the stock ROM is because I didn't want any of the issues a new ROM/GSI might have.
Some Maps APP I have installed
Organic Maps: Offline Hike, Bike, Trails and Navigation
OsmAnd+ — Maps & GPS Offline
TomTom AmiGO - GPS Navigation
Sygic
This one is free and very good, sadly doesn't work on Android Auto
So does the TomTom Speed camera app.

Check out TomTom AmiGO https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomtom.speedcams.android.map
It's the closest I've found with features to Google, such as traffic and closures, whilst being free and not shite. Although you don't get any of the reviews or store suggestions if that's something you're in to.

Use this app from TomTom. It overlays a nice little speed limit from tomtom's data
