Step 1: Buy an Opal card
Step 2: Plan your trip using google maps (or if on Android) the Tripview app and head to the station.
Step 3: After entering a train station, make use of the indicator boards, make your way to the correct platform.
3.2: Wait for the train to come to a complete halt, make way for passengers wishing to egress, then board that train.
Step 4: Exit the train at a place convenient to you.
Or better yet, TripView is an excellent public transport app, especially useful for buses you catch regularly. Includes the real time tracking and GPS maps in one.
What one has to keep in mind is that we weren't really in lockdown until Friday when the new restrictions were introduced (we could still go tighter I think, but yeah).
As of yesterday Sydney is at 9% mobility according to the Citymapper mobility index (https://citymapper.com/cmi/sydney) meaning people are moving around less. To compare, last year during Melbourne's lockdown they got to 7%, Sydney's lowest in March was 11%, and Sydney's current is the lowest of all the cities whose mobility data is published).
While recent numbers are pretty troubling (and we can expect them to get worse over the next few days), we will start to see them coming down pretty soon I think. Still, the government has totally bungled this, we didn't need to be in this mess, it's very frustrating! Just don't lose hope, guys. Stay at home :-)
> Let's just replace Google with Crown for a second and see how we feel.
The side effects of having a giant tech HQ is that you get more tech firms around it, highly skilled people want to live around there, etc.
The side effects of having a casino is that poor people get poorer:
> One disadvantaged working-class Sydney suburb, Fairfield, gambled away more than AUS $8 billion from 2015-16 -- or just under $40,000 per resident.
Clearly one is not the same as the other
Edit: these are for an earlier version, latest version seems to only request camera permission
I'll just keep using the plastic, thanks.
Just so you know, at the bare minimum, Google and Apple will know the time when you show your drivers licence. On top of that, this app has access to:
Calendar:
Camera:
Photos/Media/Files:
Location:
Storage:
Other:
Yeah, I'll pass, thanks.
I've been using Private Internet Access for a few months now. Can't complain, seems to be fairly fast and easy to use. PIA also has Aussie servers too which is a plus, although their US servers are pretty good too. Reasonably cheap as well. Would recommend.
Just going to leave this here: Should I Answer
Good for Android phones that dont have the in built call screening. I don't know if there is a iPhone equivalent.
Just get to the blue mountains and start hiking. This photo is beautiful and a compliment to the OP. But as location goes it is one of so many easily accessible places.
If you want to know nice walks, there are two sources I can recommend:
AllTrails is an international web site but has great Australian content. Just open its Explorer page and take a look
WildWalks is more Australia focussed and has some good thematic collections. Also provides extensive hiking notes
Interesting we dropped to 9% mobility on 10 July but haven't gone below 10% since even with increased lockdown rules. https://citymapper.com/cmi/sydney I'm still not 100% sure how this is calculated but I imagine there's a lot of statistical noise meaning any figure between 7 and 15% could be the same.
This is a sweet deal but I see lots of people talking about super cheap lunch options other places.
If you're inclined to play Russian Roulette with your Colon to save a few bucks I'd recommend downloading something like the Name and Shame App which I'm pretty sure is put together by a Redditor from memory.
Simple way to get a heads up on some of the very dodgy stuff some cheap eats get up to in the kitchen.
Going to the beach and catching up with friends who have finally come home!
The game I spent four hours making last night got featured on Kotaku today, and is getting good reviews and shared a bunch on facebook. Really interested to see how it goes over the weekend.
Driving up the coast now, just pushed an update and now I'm hungry for dinner! :)
Gonna spend the evening stuffing round with my old MacBook Pro in an attempt to get my game on to the Apple App Store by tonight, or tomorrow. Had another win today, Tone's Sinking Ship hit #1 for top new games in it's category. Some of you might be sick of hearing about it, my bad if so, but I haven't had this sort of a win in a while and it's nice to share the news with you guys.
We're having parmis for dinner, and the washing is on. Currently waiting on downloads to finish so I'm watching old controversial fights in an effort to stay awake. So far I've chomped through Hendricks vs GSP and Hendricks vs Lawler I and II. I feel like there's a common theme with the fighters there ;)
How were your days today guys and gals?
Morning all! Had a great last night hanging out with some cool people, came home and started hashing out all the iOS stuff for Tone's Sinking Ship.
Actually hit number 8 in it's category overnight, which is pretty great. One behind Kim Kardashian's Hollywood and one above Ice Age Adventures. Hopefully eventually we knock Kim's ass outta the way and hit a top 5 spot lol.
Edit: Whoa, someone just gilded my original link for the game. Cheers! :3
piss off back to td you lousy foreigner, why would we want the american version of free speech where people are allowed to hurl abuse at the funerals of veterans and neo-nazis are allowed to march in the streets and run people over
Yeh, the BOM is ultimately the source of weather data in Australia anyways, just a question of how you want it displayed. Some other redditors programmed up Aus Weather, which is pretty spiffy.
I use Seabreeze because of its focus on wind - scroll across the day and you'll see the wind strength for a given hour. Southerlies always bring cool air (and usually storms), westerlies hot. Normal skimmer direction is north east for the harbour area.
Woke up this morning to an email from Apple saying that my submission of Tone's Sinking Ship was rejected due to being possibly "considered objectionable by many users" and sent a screenshot of this saying that it is apparently offensive.
Have a whinge Apple, lol. Guess I'll just ram it through photoshop and try again.
Man, after ~~weeks~~ months of no dramas with my customer, they've had everything fall over yesterday due to a VPN issue on their side, then first thing this morning, it looks like they've lost access to everything that we supply them with that requires a licence.
Just as I was gonna chuck a sicky.
On the plus side, the NBN guy actually came at exactly 8am this morning and was gone in about 15-20 mins, leaving me with a fully functioning service. Looks like even the switch from Telstra to ABB has gone smoothly!
If I was in Sydney I would offer you over for an "Orphan's" lunch. Instead, I am going to tell you what I would do if it was my perfect Christmas day without the family.
Hope you have a good Christmas.
Try meetup.com perhaps? There's also facebook photography groups where you might find some likeminded people.
What kind of knowledge are we talking here, like learning to shoot manual, or more advanced lighting and speedlite techniques kind of thing?
If it's the former my advice is to just take lots of photos. Read the basic principles of how aperture and shutter speeds work on the internet, have your camera's manual handy, and get out there. Start with a semi-automatic mode (Tv or Av ... I prefer Tv, just seems to work better on my canon) and have auto ISO on, so you only control one variable. See what settings the camera chooses for the aperture and ISO and you'll start to learn how these things come together, then you can move on to experimenting with all the settings to make the kind of images you want to. Getting the correct exposure is a balancing act.
It's hump day, so I'm starting to look forward to sailing on Sunday.
Mind you, the wind forecast is trolling me - one day they reckon it'll be 20kts plus, the next day, the forecast drops to maybe 5. Guessing it'll all depend on how the high interacts with a leftover cold front. Come on weather gods, don't fail me now!
'ravishing rava' + 'parramatta' into a search, found it:
Sankalp $ $ • Indian • Vegetarian friendly 326/336 Great Western Hwy, Wentworthville Shopping Plaza, 17, Wentworthville, NSW 2145
and for those brave enough to order some cum flavored soup, go for it, here is the ubereats link to it:
https://www.ubereats.com/au/sydney/food-delivery/sankalp/Gwamom4cSu2aOx2yd_GcAQ
edit: apparently it is a franchise, come on boys, lets open up some more cum eateries!
edit 2: jokes aside, the restaurant appears to have good reviews, so I guess if you in the area (near one of their 5 locations) and into indian food, give it some patronage
You could try smoothing out the footage with Hyperlapse.
I just got a GoPro and am waiting for a part in the mail, but I hope to get some bike time lapses of Sydney soon. I've wanted to try all this since I learned Hyperlapse exists - I don't know if it works - but it looks super neat.
Yay, it's Wednesday! Hope you guys have all had a solid week so far, can't believe we've made it this far already! (I had to check my calendar a few times because I really wasn't sure)
Found out last night that Tone's Sinking Ship is ranked 11 for it's category in Australia. Pretty awesome, I'm stoked and now set on shipping a few updates and starting a new game this week!
Alas, not yet. Some heavily vetted app devs have been allowed access to it, but Transport seem to still be having a hard time of getting out of the habit of micromanaging how the data gets out. They got Price-Waterhouse-Coopers to run an only-the-prestigious-need-apply hackfest FFS.
http://www.zdnet.com/au/real-time-tracking-of-sydney-buses-makes-its-way-into-apps-7000008871/
Edit: On the bright side, they let TripView have access to it. It's way of looking up busses is nowhere near as elegant as for trains, but it will show you realtime data if you know what stop you are going from and to.
Using Google Flights You can get Qantas tickets (but flying on Emirates through Dubai) To Frankfurt for about $2,500.
I would take Emirates over Scoot!
Just before you start you should look at packages such as Shopify. E-Commerce in a box, pre-integrated & you can just build a custom connector for what I presume is an inventory database ? https://www.xero.com/us/shopify/
Better than re-inventing the wheel :)
TIL!
Guess its this:
but not my hood, no idea?
> $11 million spent
It's a rounding error on the >$15 billion we spend on roads every year https://bitre.gov.au/publications/2011/files/is_040.pdf
To be honest, I think you'll be better off not using flash (it's a dead thing in 2017), and since it's a simple task, you should be better off using some JavaScript library for that.
Have a look at processingjs, you should be able to do what you want in an afternoon:
For frontend and (presumably) webdev backend, most roles can be divided into agency (where you work for a company who does web work for a lot of other businesses) or client side (where you work at a company on their website only).
Client side usually means you're locked into their existing technology choices - you'll be working., for example, with their Wordpress site or their Sitecore site or their Drupal site, so you'd need to be familiar with WordPress/PHP or Sitecore/C# or Drupal.Python. Those CMS choices are kinda linked to industry segment/size too, Drupal is more common in government and academic sites. Sitecore is more "enterprise" than WordPress, smaller companies and SMEs tend to run WordPress where Sitecore is more likely to be a much larger company (that's not a set in stone rule though, WordPress does run some huge sites, and SMEs that are heavily Windows shops are sometimes running Sitecore).
Agency side work will give you exposure to a wider range to technology to work with, you likely end ups working on a range of CMSs and even doing one-off sites and single page applications using stuff like React or Flutter.
If you want a client side job, you'll want to be able to demonstrate deep experience in their one tech stack, whether that's WordPress, Drupal, Sitecore (or Magento/Shopify/Squarespace/whatever) - when you're looking at individual roles/companies, https://builtwith.com will give you a good overview of what their public website is using.
If you're more interested in agency work (which is probably better as an early career move) then a more "polyglot" approach will be needed - they're less likely to care if you've not done any React.js work, ion you can demonstrate flexibility and capacity to learn new things by being able to show off Angular and PHP and Python, rather than, say, just a string of WordPress sites.
I'd recommend http://www.codecademy.com/ first. You can do it in your own time, and (I reckon) it's better than any in-person courses.
It will teach you enough to go off and start playing with actual sites, and learning from other sites, which will be faster, easier, and cheaper than doing physical courses.
Reading the play store description:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.curbcycle.curby
You'll sign up for an account. Buy? or be sent tags to attach to a bag you put the plastic in, scan a QR code with the app.
Just the usual, give a private company your data, crowd sourcing stuff.
Doesn't everyone want to do that? /s
That's what's shown on the news, because that's what news do, i.e. they're not going to report "Here we are at a stable country with no war in 100 years."
In most metrics that you can measure we're doing very well in the world.
TripView’s UI and user experience is pretty confusing tbh. The fact you need to create and save a trip before seeing the next train to somewhere, and it doesn’t do walking, the pain just adds up.
Check out Opal Travel on the App Store- it seems much faster to use and less cluttered
https://apps.apple.com/au/app/opal-travel/id941006607
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.opal.travel&hl=en_AU
I’ve converted a bunch of my die hard TripView colleagues over to it
I've been using this SunSmart app which lets you input your skin type and location, which then tells you how much and how often you need to apply/reapply sunscreen. Sends you push notifications to remind you every 2 hrs too if you want!
Also on apple if you search for it I'm sure.
Morning all! Got bored yesterday afternoon, and made Tone's Sinking Ship for Android. Have fixed some bugs but apologies if it crashes on you. Feel free to rate it if you like it, I make no money out of it either way :)
Hope you guys have had a good week. What are you up to this weekend?
> Uhhh. Something more secure. Since email isn't a secure system. The packets sent to your provider are unencrypted and relatively easy to pick out.
Say what? POTS is in no way secure. Stop spouting the same bullcrap that keeps faxes in demand.
You can tap any landline from the street cabinet with a $10 linesman phone, or any dumbphone (GSM) for $30.
And if you're not using encrypted mail, you need to get out of the 90s (SMTPS = 2002 / IMAPS = 2003).
What sort of skills do you have?
You might be able to do some work with Amazon Mechanical Turk. https://www.mturk.com/mturk/welcome
Some things require typing in validation codes or transcribing audio etc.
The simpler the task the less the pay. But you can probably churn through a whole lot.
Oh, I did an IFTTT applet last week
You can snatch it at https://ifttt.com/applets/QSmiCAzP-notify-when-a-new-list-of-this-weekend-s-events-happening-in-sydney-is-posted, no configuration required but you're gonna need an IFTTT account and the app installed on your phone.
You can use IFTTT for tons of other things though!
I went shopping and spoilt myself for Valentine's Day. May have gone a little overboard. Love thr Satsuma spray from The Body Shop. Also, here's that meetup link https://trello.com/b/1Mqqpyn8/meetups I am thinking waffles, in the spirit of Galentine's Day next week! Edit: Note you need to be a member to vote and edit Trello stuff. Sorry guys, I should have noticed that before :(
> take saving money far more seriously than what I have for the past two years.
Spend a couple of months at least tracking every little thing you spend money on. Shove all the data into it. Then you'll understand better where your money goes in real terms.
Perhaps try YNAB?
Put in eeeeeevrery little thing you spend money on as a category, include a 'blow it' category too. Assign a target amount to each per month. Also do similar things for more expensive/infrequent things (overseas holidays, house deposit, new car, etc - eg if you need $6k for a new car in 12 months, assign $500/month toward it). Also add things like emergency funds etc too.
You'll then have a million little categories of where money is assigned, which may help transform it from one giant pool of 'blow it on blackjack and hookers', to 'well that's for the car, and that's for the O/S trip's etc.
It helped me figure out what was important too.
Neat, I spotted myself at the start: http://i.imgur.com/24s2397.png
I had an epic clipstack at one of the lights, was near the front and pushed off hard. My left foot wasnt clipped in right, slipped off the pedal and down I went in front of everyone. Most embarrassing thing I have ever done on a bike.
Fortunately the front left shifter took the brunt of the fall, just bent it back in position and I was good to go. Rode like hell afterwards to outrun the embarrassment, but now I have to own up to my stupid mistakes.
Strava linkage: https://www.strava.com/activities/424054670
Hope you had a fun ride! Its definitely a blast cruising along the sea cliff bridge :)
The hottest day of 2014 in Sydney was November 14, with a high temperature of 37°C.
Hottest day of 2014 in Richmond was November 23, with a high temperature of 44°C.
You can book regular taxi through Uber which is charged at the regular taxi rate (by law.)
Or, if you book the more premium (and well worth it) uber black, it's a bit more. Keep in mind you don't get the 10% cabcharge fee with either.)
[shameless plug] Use my referral code uberfromjosh before 21st of Jan and get $20 off your first ride (and I get $20 as well)
Bit of feedback for the site:
#1 Death to all signup overlays.
Kill off the overlay that wants me to sign up to your newsletter.
I've only just opened the site, it's not even finished loading yet (I'll get to that in a second) and I'm being prompted to sign up for something.
I don't even know what it is yet, why would I sign up for a newsletter?
#2 It's Sloooooooooow
I'm on a really fast business fibre connection, and your site is taking forever to load. I can only imagine it's going to be worse for people on dodgy ADSL or 3G.
There's a couple of causes for this:
a) You're hosting it with GoDaddy (presumably one of their shared hosting plans, but VPS isn't much better with them).
b) GoDaddy are physically locating it on a server in Singapore.
c) You have a freaking 5.7 megabyte image right up the front. (Possibly more, my jaw just hit the floor at this though)
A and B are pretty crap, but you can probably mitigate it a little bit by solving C.
You can also help things out by putting your site behind a CDN such as Amazon Cloudfront or Cloudflare. They both have endpoints that are far far faster, don't cost much, and are in Australia.
Using Cloudfront/Cloudflare/etc will mitigate issue such as that (oh my god) 5.7MB image.
Consider using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights. This is the report for your site
Otherwise, seems like it could be interesting. I'd want to know more about the kinds of teas I can expect (even if you can't mention brands, like you said in other comments)
Things I've done on trains in the last month:
I used to dread the thought of commuting for roughly an hour each way, but can comfortably say that I'm never bored doing it.
> I’d suggest you have a smart phone that has Google Maps, as all transport options are available on there. Check it your phone is locked to your carrier in the US before assuming you can get a prepaid service here :)
To expand on this, this app is great for planning train, bus and fairy (edit: I'm leaving this spelling rather than hiding my shame) routes.
Not sure if you're Android or iOS, OP so here is links to both stores
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grofsoft.tripview.lite&hl=en
https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/tripview-lite/id312389512
Hopefully this app is accessible from the US versions of these stores.
Welcome!
Netflix started blocking VPNs so it would be a bit tough to get Netflix US these days. Still, all the Netflix Originals are available here of course, and they're pretty good.
Sky Germany might be possible, things like Private Internet Access offer Germany as one of the countries.
For Google Play, follow these instructions
A friend has bee trailing Private Internet Access (when you search it, its the site with all the smiling cyclists on the front page), he said its been reliable while hes used it (2 months now), it doesn't im[act his connection speed and they do not keep traffic logs.
Yeah the prices have been insane these last few weeks. The upcoming long weekend might have something to do with the sudden surge.
I use the 7/11 app[1], it lets you lock in a price so that helps. I also regularly check prices on NSW FuelCheck[2] too. Usually it's cheaper around Ashfield, Croydon area but even they're expensive...

Hi!
TripView is probably your best bet, it's available on Android. There's a free and paid version, free is fine for most but paid saves your trips for later :)
Also has real time tracking and all that good stuff.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X and The Master and Margarita were two stand-outs, but really, the whole exercise was pretty worthwile. It got me reading more, and more widely than I've done in years.
Like I said in another comment, The Autobiography of Malcolm X and Master and Margarita were probably the best of the lot. That said, reading Bukowski for the first time, and Vonnegut for the first time in ages was pretty fun too.
> steam that checks if you're computer is powerful enough to meet the minimum specs to play the game ?
There is this place, http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri
Its kind of dodgy though, sometimes it recommends wrongly, YMMV.
What can I steal from work.... well there's a lot of stuff in a hospital you could quite easily walk out with. You wouldn't get very far with anything bigger than a roll of tape probably, but you could make it to the door.
Now I'm not if anyone noticed but Sunday night was a beautiful cloud free night so I headed up to the long reef headland and took some pictures of the stars and the like. Which, for me a noob like me at least, turned out better than expected and I have to share somewhere. So check out the half moon rising over the ocean here, especially with a that beautiful red colour from rarefaction with the earth's atmosphere. Pic here
Kinda following on my previous point, I've been trying to document as much of the process on video as possible but now I need some more SD cards, so can any photography/video give a good source for 4k recording capable SD cards?

Flux changes your monitor's display colour temp to warm, it's easier on your eyes and doesn't keep you up as much at night.
The wikipedia entry explains it well
"The program was designed to reduce eye strain during nighttime use and to prevent disruption of normal sleep patterns"
I have flux on pretty much all day except when I'm editing photos.
Chuck your email address in https://haveibeenpwned.com/, at a guess your login details for some service have been compromised and a bot is trying to use the same login/password for steam so they can buy stuff on your credit card and trade it to another account.
> to try and quit smoking
I'd suggest you read Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It's super easy to read -- only took me 4 hours all up.
Worked for me, haven't had a cigarette since 9th Jan 2014 and never looked back. It is true what he says, when you finish the book you're not an ex-smoker, you're a non-smoker.
Part of the reason the book works is that you're not allowed to stop smoking till you read it. Seriously, if you really want to quit and haven't read this book I don't believe you really want to quit. It's $16 -- less than a packet of cigarettes -- shipped to your door.
Before I managed to quit I bought my propylene glycol - nicotine solutions from China, but they were a bit shit and it was a few years ago with older egic tech.
I know this is off topic but seriously that book changed my life and for $16 you're kidding yourself if you don't give it a shot. If you read this book you'll understand why people don't end up quitting cigarettes when they swap to ecigs. I've known half a dozen friends who've tried it (ecigs) and none have managed it for more than 6 months, plus, you're still addicted to nicotine so it's SSOOOOO easy to relapse. I have two friends + me who have quit smoking after reading Easy Way. I have one friend who didn't finish the book and still smokes.
And just down the road from The Clare. Bonus.
I've updated the Google Group. Join it if you haven't already.
There is (current status most likely: was) a geocache called Tank Stream which brings you to all the art installations with regarding to this.

Grande is a grave word, the stress is at the bold part: gran-de, and since it ends in a vowel, it doesn't get the accent.
so-fá, ca-fé, and me-nú are all acute words ended in vowels, so they get the accent.
There's only one way to pronounce a written word in Spanish, and also only one way to write a spoken word.
It's not like English where for example read is pronounced differently in past and present tense

It's a bit daunting at first. But I built this computer with the sole purpose of running OSX, so everything is compatible. I should edit that I have separate audio and ethernet connections for OSX though. This is also maybe the 7th computer I've installed OSX on.And tell your mate to buy my computer, blows the current iMac out of the water. I could get maybe 18k on geekbench 32 bit.

Honestly, the first was such a piece of shit the only good part was Branch falling off his horse. #2 is apparently even worse and not worth spending any money on.
two died at home... people really need to buy a blood oxygen meter so they know when there in the danger zone... $20 on Amazon.
> Just so you know, at the bare minimum, Google and Apple will know the time when you show your drivers licence.
Fair point, they know when you open the app, and the app itself could record/phone home every time you ever used the app and what you tapped on. I mean, you could always use it while in airplane mode, but no guarantees it's not logging when you last opened the app.

>On top of that, this app has access to:

There is an official Opal app by TransportNSW, which also gives you the price for the trip as well. It has a trip planner, I just tell it to use my current location and type where I want to go.

If there are any wear developers here please make a Monty themed watchface :-)
Picked up a Samsung S20 FE the other day and just got the 5G turned on.
I've only got 4G coverage in my house, which is not bad, but if I walk maybe 100 metres away just by the shops, I pickup 5G, which is somewhat better.
It does seem to be a word that has fallen by the wayside. I looked it up http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/peak#peak-2 and i do not think i have ever heard peak used in this way.
I have a strange interest in etymology.
I don't think there's an email list just yet, but if you use IFTTT.com, you can create a trigger for any post and have it send you an email with the link.
If u/AnorhiDemarche doesn't mind, I can publish an applet for this
Keep your expectation low - most is ADSL, we just got a conservative government that decided they'd kill off the NBN - it's dead now, so forget about it.
Getting connected is always a pain in the arse - so again, keep expectation low and hopefully you'll find it less painful than you expect.
If you want an ISP that will go to court over your rights online rather than cave to the media companies- IINet deserves a mention.

You won't be able to get a lightning extension cable.
I've been using this cable for years, still going strong.
It's MFI certified so not a dodgy yumcha ebay special
I guess... Go to Bali (lots of Australian tourists, you can stay in a resort and experience zero culture or go to a more rural area and experience less tourists and some amazing people/food/nature).
I've worked in a few locations, in non-CBD suburbs food outlets can be quite hit and miss.
We should do a map of CBD food courts, like my Underground Sydney map ;)

Thanks for the comments
That sounds like a slow connection (or overused by something else at your place). https://fast.com/ gives you a good idea of current streaming speed since it tests using Netflix data. (That won't actually fix anything, but will at least tell you if speed is the problem.)
The password could be from one of those top 10000 password lists (low probability) or as another commenter said could be an old password of yours that was uncovered in a hack. If your password is similar to that I would suggest changing it anyway as it's quite a weak password. You can also check https://haveibeenpwned.com/ to see if any services you've you've signed up for have been compromised which could have leaked your password or email.
https://duckduckgo.com with the dark theme.
I used to use https://startpage.com but then I discovered !bangs in duckduckgo and it is much easier to use e.g. !g test = google search 'test' or !a watch = amazon search 'watch'.
I get most of my print books from http://www.abebooks.com - you will have to wait 2-4 weeks, but there are so many books on there for not much more than a buck each, even with postage they're cheaper than new books.
Also try http://www.booko.com.au for a meta-search - it looks for new and used copies.
For anyone interested, if you borrow eBooks from City of Sydney (or basically any library) via OverDrive or other online stores, as long as you can get it into Adobe Digital Editions you can probably rip out the DRM and read it as God intended.
Have a look at Calibre and the DeDRM plugin by Apprentice Alf. I use that to remove DRM from eBooks I borrow from various libraries so I can read them on my Kobo. Just return it in ADE once you've imported it to Calibre so other people can check it out. :-)
Jump on to /r/LearnJapanese. Get the Genki books - http://www.bookdepository.com/search?searchTerm=genki&search=Find+book. These books are by far the most popular books for self learning for beginners.
I'm going over next month on a working holiday visa and I can't speak a word. I do have the books but I've never gotten around to them but I'll have plenty of time next month when I'm there!
You will enjoy watching this then: http://www.openculture.com/2013/08/the-origins-project-brings-together-neil-degrasse-tyson-richard-dawkins-lawrence-krauss-bill-nye-ira-flatow-and-more-on-one-stage.html That would be an amazing event to go!
I guess from a Sydney perspective it's pretty flat :)
I occasionally record rides using Runkeeper and it suggests it's about 268m of climb all up.
EDIT: and you're right. It's not the most direct route. I could shave a couple of k's off the route but it would be riding down some busy roads. I've given that route a go on the weekend and didn't enjoy it then so haven't tried during peak hour :)
I installed MapBox TileMill, then downloaded the OpenStreetMaps Sydney data from here and did some very basic styling (roads grey, rail red, footpaths very light grey). Exported that to a surprisingly small PDF so I could draw over it in Illustrator. If you open up the PDF in Illustrator (or your favourite drawing app) you can edit all the stuff.
I think you'd get different routes starting at different locations but I can also see the sense in a Sussex St line.
=/
Well shit.
I was expecting this to be a fun silly little thing that I could just knock out and forget about. But I got an email this morning from mapbox.com saying that because I got 6900 views in one day, they're going to start billing me.
The free account that I was on was only good for 3000 views per month.
So...... I'm either going to have to shut this down or put ads or something on it.
Upgrading to 10,000 views per month would be $5 per month.
Upgrading to 100,000 views per month would be $50 per month.
I could switch to google maps, which would let me have 25,000 views per day for free.... but then I'd have to put a bunch of work into rebuilding the website from scratch. (And I don't think I'd be able to have as much control over the pins - or at least, not as easily control the pins).
And they're actually full of the Waze beacons :) https://www.waze.com/en-GB/beacons
>Powered by Eddystone beacon technology, Waze Beacons transmit a wireless signal that can be received by any phone or tablet with Bluetooth® wireless technology enabled and provide an alternative to GPS signal. In other words, Waze Beacons enable uninterrupted location service with driver devices, yielding tunnel navigation not possible with GPS.
>
>Installed on tunnel walls, Waze Beacons send location information to driver devices (one-way communication only) to empower Waze or other navigation providers to offer real-time routes and alerts, ensuring drivers never miss an in-tunnel exit and reducing collisions caused by last minute lane changes to reach an exit.
Has anyone tried prime video from amazon?
It seems to be a bit worse than Netflix, but they are offering it for only $3/month for 6 months, and then up to $6. And you can cancel any time... I'm thinking about just giving it a go for six months @3 bucks...
Do you have a access to a computer with a cd/dvd drive? Then its simplicity itself to do it yourself. I use free software Audiograbber for quick CD ripping......converting to mp3 requires a free plugin which is located below the link for the audiograbber download. http://www.audiograbber.org.
Good mobile app developers are expensive, and most likely won't want to go into 'partnership' unless there is a solid business plan or a clear idea of exactly what you want to do. If you are looking to create a mobile app, I would recommend:
Remember, most good mobile developers will probably hear "hey, this is an awesome idea for an app" many times a week, if not daily. You need to wow them with something thats different.
Hope that helps!
Yeah but if you want to transfer the most data the quickest... hard drives in a van is still the go, see: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/aws-importexport-snowball-transfer-1-petabyte-per-week-using-amazon-owned-storage-appliances/
Not sure why the downvotes, you're completely right. AWS has even launched a hard drive courier service in the US as a more effective way get up to 50 TB of data at once across to its cloud. This is in the US which is the centre of the Internet (network-wise) and has many orders of magnitude more capacity than Australia.
There are literally 1000s of websites that do this! Just google it!
I use this: https://www.openshift.com/ they have a free plan and can support from a simple html website to php to java!
They also set you up with easy to remember URLs.
