I've never had this issue in Bristol in the decade I've lived there. And ive also moved around almost yearly in the city.
As others have noted, check the bus actually stops there or if the stop is closed.
This app is a godsend. I find it super useful for working out stops and routes. It hooks into the same feed as the electronic boards which are reasonably accurate, and even useful for checking if your bus is at least making progress when it's not accurate.
> Is this only a London thing?
No, there are loads of apps that do it, e.g. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fatattitude.buscheckeruklite&hl=en_GB but they all get their info from traveline: http://www.traveline.info/about-traveline/developer-area/
You could try this application...
...found it pretty useful myself, and covers the whole country, not just Sheffield so useful when travelling.
You have got some great advice. You might also find this app useful if you have an Android phone, UK Bus checker: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fatattitude.buscheckeruklite
It will locate where you are with GPS then show you all the bus stops near by. You can then click on a bus stop to see what time the buses will arrive at and the route they will take.
Have to say this is where https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fatattitude.buscheckeruklite comes into it's own, one of the few apps I've paid for. I'm sure there are free equivalents. I don't know if your local buses have GPS, loads do these days, this app tells you not just timetable times but also as the bus gets close. May help.
For checking bus times I find "UK Bus Checker" is a really useful app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fatattitude.buscheckeruklite
It will locate where you are and show the bus stops which are near you, when the next bus is going to arrive and the route that bus will take.
As for etiquette , if you see the bus approaching that you want get on stick your hand out to signal the bus to stop otherwise it might just drive past you as the driver will think no one at the stop wants the bus.
If your not at the front of the line, don't rely on people in front of you to signal the bus to stop, or ask if you want that particular bus if their not catching it. If i see a bus approaching and it doesn't look like the people in front of me are going to get that bus ill just ask them if their getting that bus or not., if their not ill go to the front of the line and signal the bus.
This app is pretty usefiul for bus times. It's hooked into the arrival time board tracking system. The free ad supported version used to be really unstable but the crashing went away when I bought it (on sale). Maybe it'll have been fixed, but it might be worth a purchase.
