When you see climate change as an anti Tory or anti Police or pro SWP issue you alienate people who support the issue, but not these extra add-on issues that you are claiming.
I saw a program at he weekend where former Republican Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger talks about how to communicate about climate change.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0011b03/arnold-schwarzenegger-on-climate-change
As he said climate change is not an (American) party political issue.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Why-Civil-Resistance-Works-Nonviolent/dp/0231156839
Collected data on protests between 1900 -2006. Showed that non-violent protests are about twice as likely to work than violent protests. This is the book that extinction rebellion frequently talk about.
A lot of the reviews for the app on the Google Play Store look fake - obviously fake.

In the BBC documentary Status Wars One Summer in Bristol there's clearly some other marketing/social media manager who is in charge of the Twitter account.
A walk around Chew Valley Lake (http://www.wikiwand.com/en/Chew_Valley_Lake) is pretty nice - there are some bird watching trails around the lake. Also a bloody good café that does a cracking ham egg and chips.
To follow on the book trend - i have loved the walks from Beyond Bristol: 24 Country Walks if you are looking for walks more in the 5-10 mile range.
I've never had this issue in Bristol in the decade I've lived there. And ive also moved around almost yearly in the city.
As others have noted, check the bus actually stops there or if the stop is closed.
This app is a godsend. I find it super useful for working out stops and routes. It hooks into the same feed as the electronic boards which are reasonably accurate, and even useful for checking if your bus is at least making progress when it's not accurate.
Nice, I've made an Android app using the same data.
Although I've just noticed they've changed the API to restrict the lat/lng boundary box size so I'll need to fix that.
The easiest way is to open up the laptop and remove the hard drive (plenty of youtube videos showing how to do it) then put it in to a usb enclosure to access the data using another computer. Something like this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ORICO-Transparent-External-Enclosure-Support/dp/B01N48791I/ref=mp_s_a_1_18?dchild=1&keywords=2.5+hdd+enclosure&qid=1628105236&sprefix=2.5+hdd+&sr=8-18
Scour the internet and fire off an email to every builders in Bristol big and small, be honest about your history but focus on what you can do rather than what you can't. Say you're just looking for a break to build up your recent employment history. Something along those lines.
Also i just found this gumtree category which has a few adverts for labourers on it, worth keeping an eye on.
https://www.gumtree.com/tradesmen-labour-jobs/bristol
I don't have much to suggest beyond that, but I wish you all the best.
They have a slide showing a brainstorming session from a while ago, which implies they are fairly legit. It is odd they don't have more of a presence though online. https://prezi.com/ydkbftzkg8oo/bristol-quality-lettings/
Get yourself this book. My wife got it for me in November and as a born and bred Bristolian there are a huge number of things I'd never seen or heard of before. Get yourself on one of those electric scooters or a bike and you can see one or a few a day.
My genuine words of reassurance are that this city is amazing. Stick with it and when we get some slack and can go out you won't find it difficult to meet people or get into a community. There's literally something for everyone here. And Bristol in the warm sunshine is like nothing else.
I've always moved away to far flung places but always end up back here.
Also if you fancy a booze fueled bit of outdoor activity in the summer come and join us for softball on the Downs every Wednesday from April onwards. Its a community of about 300 people all having a laugh, drinking beers and ciders, relaxing and occasionally playing "sport" - check our the website for more info Clifton Softball League I'm one of the organisers and can put you in touch with teams looking for newbies if you're at all interested. It's where I met my wife, all my closest friends now and have had some of the best times.
We use this great book by Nigel Vile. Circular routes with a pub at the end!

yep, i see its blowing NW. And theres a little formation that will pass over us... unless it also just completely goes around like before. Just lets get that bit of rain. Litttttle bit. I see flashes, but no result
https://www.accuweather.com/en/gb/bristol/bs1-6/weather-radar/327328
Yeah it's really nice - I commuted Bristol to Bath by electric bike for a while (needed electricity to get up the massive Claverton Down hill at the other end, but the cycle route itself is pretty flat), speaking of which do be aware that Bristol is quite hilly!
If budget is a major concern then Gumtree is a good place to look for second hand bargains, especially if you have the skills to service an older bike back to life! Also events like this https://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/huge-bike-sale-on-monday-saturday-107-used-bikes-bristol-upcycles-workshop-road-hybrid-mountain-/1388915936
I have walked sections of that trail. I think it is meant to go behind some industrial units, you can see the path marked in red on Open Street Map here. From Feeder Road, down Kings Park Avenue, under a bridge then snakes round behind the M&S at Avonmeads. But last time I tried (coming from the direction of the centre) it was blocked off, with vague directions to get to Feeder Road by road. I hopped the barrier anyway and it was a muddy overgrown trek, but just about manageable. I don't think it is designed as a bike trail so bits may be like this I suppose, and it isn't well maintained in general at all.
Once that section is done, it follows the Avon between Bath Road and St Phillips, behind Temple Meads and you can follow past the harbourside and on towards the sea.
You might already know but I find this service invaluable for finding which stream a movie is on. It's quite frustrating there are so many different services that it is required though.
https://www.justwatch.com/uk/movie/terminator-2-judgment-day
are you familiar with reading OS maps? I can't really imagine planning countryside walks without them
hot tip, bing maps has an ordnance survey layer
for example, you could do something like this to avoid a decent chunk of roads between the edge of Leigh Woods and Tyntesfield, still involves some though.
Seconded. Caught it by accident and watched to the end. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b09jggy5/blitz-the-bombs-that-changed-britain-series-1-episode-4 or it's being repeated on Monday 18 Dec at 11.15pm.
If I had a bike spare I'd give it to you! Not sure if this has been mentioned but freecycle may be an option, people may list a bike on there or you can say you are looking for one. Everything must be given away free. https://www.freecycle.org
Hi mate, just been through this myself. The WiFi power of those boxes is shit. You can think about replacing it with something decent - something with antennas. https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-Archer-C50-V3-AC1200/dp/B075PDLQ2Y/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=ac1200%2Bwifi%2Brouter&qid=1554460961&s=gateway&sr=8-6&th=1 looks like it might fit the bill.
My solution was more expensive but involved buying kit with the same basic power, went from getting no WiFi at the bottom of my house to getting full bars at the bottom of the garden.
Also if you order something like that from Amazon and it doesn't work you just pack it right back up and drop it off at your local shop for a full refund within 4 weeks. You will need to put your Virgin box into Modem Mode, happy to guide you through it.
There are a fascinating range of iterations of the scroll ... here’s the book for us logotype nerds ... The Bristol Scroll: its origins and evolution https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0948975954/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_i_WmKBFbNM5QKPP
The Williams book is good for a first-year perspective of these topics, but in the second year most students are redirected to the Tanenbaum books, along with some Linux kernel books. I've still got both my Linux Kernel and Williams book; perhaps it's time to stick them on eBay...
As it seems you're looking to go on the MSc conversion course at Bristol (I was briefly on one of the Advanced MSc's) I would highly recommend looking through the programme structure on the CS department website as all the information a student will need is on there. You'll want to get a decent Java book and a C book; Thinking in Java is the best Java book I've read, but it can be quite tricky to pick up. As mentioned in the top post Java Software Solutions is the main UWE Java book and it's fantastic for beginners, but is a bit wishy-washy if you're really into the why, rather than the how. In regards to C the definitive book is The C Programming Language. It's a small reference, but it's so concise and it was what most lecturers at both UWE and Bristol were keen to push on students.
Finally, there are plenty of girls on the conversion MSc (if anything, far more CS girls at Bristol than at UWE). From what I witnessed, people won't think any less of you. If anything, you'll have to learn how to fight off the nerds who keep coming onto you.
This is a DJI Mini 2 I'm using and it would currently cost around £470 from Amazon in the "Fly more" combo pack (you get extra batteries, a case etc). I'm planning on upgrading to a Mini 3 Pro at some point in the new year, but this drone has served me pretty well.
How many points is that in the Michelin i-SPY?
32 yo here and same. Not single but I don't want to only hang out with my SO. It's hard to meet people. I've looked at meetup.com but nothing seems quite the right thing (mostly networking or drinking/partying).
I like climbing and running. I drink but would appreciate non-drinking activities.
This question comes up alot, the answer is always:
Sorry, I've just been reading the whole thread and forgot exactly who I was replying to.
This one has some quite nice discussions and links to further reading. Hopefully you find it interesting. https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Bicycle-helmet-workshop-Helmet-Laws-%3A-creating-from-Robinson/c8c8a26719a1770a92589a01384012f55b70a613
They've literally made helmets mandatory in Australia and it's not made a difference to fatality rate.
As requested; one per reviewed study: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/275338909_Evaluation_of_Australia's_bicycle_helmet_laws

Not seaside, but I did this walk last weekend, it's not the most exciting of walks but the views are very nice. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/england/somerset/lansdown-and-bath-racecourse-walk it's a circular walk that starts and ends at the pub :) bath skyline is also a nice walk.
highly recommend the alltrails app for looking for walks nearby.
Soften the wax for 10 days or so and use the thingy in the bath . Lovely. Buy it in tesco or any chemist 7 quid ortex ear way cleaner
Always take medical advice with a grain of salt online but....
I always have had ear problems and a few years ago I bought an ear syringe off amazon and it has literally been a GAME CHANGER.
I don't really want to admit it but I have it with me whenever I travel; it's as indispensable as a toothbrush for me.
Maybe book an appointment, and buy one of these in the mean time and see how you get on?

I've never had my bike pinched, I think I only ever lock it up in very public places for a couple of hours at a time.
Same issue as you, found sometimes Waitrose have it (best to call ahead). Pour it in, scrub a bit, leave overnight and flush.
I have this issue from time to time- i though my shites were caustic as the water where I live is pretty soft. So…I did some research anf got some Citric Acid crystals from Amazon.
Throw half a cup in the pan, slosh it about with a bog brush a bit, leave it for 15 minutes, slosh it about a bit more, maybe leave it 10 more minutes, brush, flush…science!!
The citric acid is fairly safe to use - it’s an additive in cooking. Use gloves and wash your hands well after (duh..cleaning the shitter).

I'll let it go for £60, its still below its R.R.P.
Best regards,
I work in a nightclub and what we do to try to stop spiking is using bottle stoppers ( like these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spikey-Bottle-Stopper-Spiking-Protection/dp/B00102537C?th=1 ) and give them out for free on all bottled drinks and people have said about how much they like them. I think we also search bags and that to stop drugs and anything that can be used for spiking from getting in. I don't know if this will help you but this is what we do to try to help the community :)
After investiagtion, it appears to be alluminium
This is the frame: http://tinypic.com/r/2i0emwh/8
The bit that's broken is the hinge on the top right, the hing that slots into the main frame keep coming out as the metal that slots inside has sheared. However, as the two pieces are in constant contact, it looks like they can just be permanently fixed together.
I'm in Stoke Gifford so reliability might not be the same between exchanges (also mine's an underground line) but Openreach's FTTP in general is pretty solid. Been with BT for 3 years now with no major drop-outs, and always getting at or above the advertised speed.
Advertised 900/110, just did a check on Fast.com and got 990/110.
I am with you, I live next to Bristol College in a block of flats, a Stack of Leaflets advertising this came through communcal door. I am on BT, they tell me I am on fastest https://www.speedtest.net/result/8973036385 and according to the checker, no plans to upgrade my street to fibre. No Virgin here.
You have GOT to get yourselves a heated vest each. I've had one for 2 years and it is an absolute game changer. It's a thin zip up vest you wear over a t-shirt but under a jumper and it is powered by the type of pocket USB power bank you use to charge your phone.
It's your own personal central heating system and I have no idea why everyone on earth doesn't own one.
We don't currently have central heating in our house - no problem... electric vest! Needed to do some drainage groundworks last winter at minus 2 degrees - was toasty warm thanks to leccy vest.
I have a couple of 20,000mAh power bricks I keep on rotation and I'm basically never cold.
Here's a link to the one I bought - Heated Vest
Assuming you were hoping for a freebie, but I just spotted this advert on gumtree. https://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/victorian-reclaimed-bricks/1417648816?utm_source=com.p1.chompsms&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=socialbuttons&utm_content=app_android
Good for you, I don't think estate agents add any value to the tenant-landlord relationship especially after some of the rules around deposit and maintenance have been firmed up. I would be slightly weary of properties which are clearly marketed towards the lower end - studios, etc. Lots of those landlords will be looking to maximise profits. If it's a manky bed and dilapidated kitchen then expect the same from the rest of the service.
I think Gumtree is where all the private landlords post their properties: https://www.gumtree.com/property-to-rent/bristol?seller_type=private. There will be very few on Rightmove because RM only allow postings from estate agents.
No idea about viewings. This is all quite unprecedented. Pretty sure landlords will be cooperative though and offer to either do a video viewing or let you speak to the current tenants.
Also I don't know if this is an american thing but people don't use Skype here. Whatsapp video calls is the most common denominator.
Riding a bike uphill isn't actually hard and most of the hills here are fine. There are some particularly bad streets like Park Street, Windmill Hill or Ashley Hill but there is always a long way round, and after 3/4 months cycling you will be up those hills no problem. The majority of routes around Bristol don't involve hills.
Riding in the rain sucks a bit but you get used to it. My wife does get an Uber to work when it is raining and then bus/walk back, and because cycling is free that works out to be the same as getting a bus or paying for parking.
Most important thing is to get a hybrid/commuter or cheap road bike like this one: https://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/boardman-bike-/1365507605 If you use a mountain bike it's going to be needlessly difficult.
As you have mentioned, a huge amount of people use their bike as their only form of transport in Bristol. It's cheap, reliable and you can even have a few jars. Also - if you need to rent a car for one-off trips, we have a Zipcar-like thing (Enterprise Car Club) where you can pick up cars for £5/hr, usually located nearby.
If you drive to the top of Romney Avenue in Lockleaze, there is a path which runs through some woods down to a viewpoint which is worth a look at also, then you can swoop down to the yellow house itself. Stoke Park Estate it is all called. There is a fishing lake at the bottom too. I don't think there is much parking (or anything to look at) on the side of the house, might all be permits because of the University. Map of it all here
Cool, thanks for the tip! Series 3, currently up on iplayer. Also, didn't realise David Olusoga lived in Bristol.
Watch this, its very informative https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000h3nm/horizon-2020-9-coronavirus-special-part-1
https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-COVID19-NPI-modelling-16-03-2020.pdf this study predicted what would happen if we did nothing. This is why the herd immunity approach was a bad idea. Basically the govt started listening to scientists, the govt did the right thing in the end.
Honestly I think it's a bit weird that you are so concerned with trying to find other Irish people. The people who live in Bristol are all varied and lovely, you should come hang out with us.
That said, a good way to meet like-minded people and kickstart a friendship group is by using Meetup.com and going to a few events. You'll likely make a few friends and go on from there.
Hello
I am moving abroad next week and need to get rid of all my furniture/kitchen supplies (most for free): king size bed, small Billy shelf, sofa, desk, chair, table, soup maker, toaster, frames, etc. Some are on gumtree (prices to discuss of course): https://www.gumtree.com/profile/accounts/418799928e4412964cdadf5d1ff03d9f
Thank you veru much, feel free to DM me
I have a set of pioneer 850 cdjs and an 850djm mixer for sale, price is advertised but negotiable. Based in Bedminster!

I'm moving overseas next week and have a lot of furniture and things to get rid of... bed, desk, printer, microwave, kettle, toaster, TV cabinet, sofa bed, wardrobes... the list probably goes on. Gumtree link below but if you're interested in anything else, let me know and I'll put more info up.

There are some much cheaper ones on gumtree
Sounds worth looking into. Slightly cheaper than an old second hand car, but without the additional costs of insurance, tax, fuel, parking, and maintenance
No freebies unfortunately! They periodically put ads like this one up on gumtree: https://www.gumtree.com/p/wood-timber/wood-off-cuts-oak-turning-diy-craft-projects/1267277544
I'm currently busy with a big project, but I've got some little projects in mind for when this one's complete, and some nice pieces of oak in the size range they describe would be just right.
I've found finding places in Bristol really difficult, so try not to leave it to the last minute. Gumtree (https://www.gumtree.com/property-to-rent/bristol) is the best for house shares.
Clinton and Redland are the best places to live (in my opinion)
If you just wanna put any ebook on a Kindle you can just use calibre, you just install it, connect you Kindle and copy over your ebooks. Getting the book well you can work that out
Or just buy one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mesh-Fruit-Basket-Black-Pack/dp/B0812ZMBKM and a set of these https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/kalas-plate-mixed-colours-80461380/
You put the plastic plates in fruit bowl as a means of providing both insulation¹ and a place to put your keys, phone or anything else you wish to protect.
¹without the insulation the faraday cage fruit bowl becomes a giant aerial rather than it’s intended faraday cage.
They aren’t and cannot be illegal as that would make up to half the building in the country illegal too. Now most do it by mistake because they don’t envision an ever connected world when they built em a short as 30 years ago. See most people then and now figure steel is strong so let’s use lost of steel in a building but guess what! That how you make a Faraday Cage. Of course those are unintentional, and generally a bit annoying to live in but purchasing a woven mesh fruit bowl well that’s another thing entirely.
I'll see what I can find. But I decided to get one of these after I saw a guy doing deliveroo runs with on of these on and during the day the indication lights were still very visible. I explored other options, but naturally with an e-scooter there's not much frame to clip things on to. The other thing I looked at was Winglights https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B076CQ7VTN/. You're meant to stick then in the holes in the side of your handlebar but in my scooter model the handlebars aren't a circular. They are like a fluted B shape to make for a little canal to run wires down.
I ride a privately owned scooter responsibly. I have a high vis light rig mounted on my backpack connected to a little set of buttons on my handlebars like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/FANCYWING-Accessory-Backpack-Direction-Indicator/dp/B07BQNB1K9
You could get one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cycling-Reflective-Rechargeable-Direction-Indicator/dp/B083Z18Y8S/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=Cycle+Indicators&qid=1618746597&sr=8-9
Other bike indicators might be something you could fit too. But this one doubles as something you can take to a rave so it's clearly the best.
Am I the only one who didn't know the significance of 42,069?
Google offers me a Lego set
https://www.amazon.co.uk/LEGO-42069-Extreme-Adventure-Toy/dp/B06VVPJ3B7
But I learnt something new on Urban Dictionary.
These are ok for £20 Streetwize SWPW Portable Power Washer - 8 L Multipurpose Pressure Sprayer – Washer Gun for Spraying, Cleaning, Painting https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GOLJLLI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_eYH.FbJDQ771P
I used to live in a flat as well and would just fill up one of these and do outside. It’s no pressure washer but it certainly does the trick.
I recommend the OS Explorer map, which can be download to the OS phone app once you buy the paper map. I have got so much use out of the Bristol and Bath Explorer 155 during the first lockdown and summer.
They’re all over the place. Do you know the Pill path along the south side of the river? The many paths up to and around Cadbury Camp?
Try the ViewRanger, Komoot or GoJauntly apps, or get the Explorer 154 map.
Lady head shaver checking in.
I use one of the shavers with the handle on it, ([like this one] https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B085ZSSL16?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share)), so it's easier to do your own head, if you keep on top of it it'll only take a couple of minutes in the shower every few days. I used a shaving foam bar as the texture from your hair helps the lather and takes seconds. Also used an aftershave balm on it when done cause I did get razor burn sometimes.
In between shaves I just washed my head with whatever soap I was using to wash my body, and didn't bother with moisturiser or any of that jazz, honestly the best part about shaving your head is the low maintenance.
Assuming you're a man, No More Mr Nice Guy (Amazon Link) is quite good as well. It has a cheesy tag line but it caters to married men who feel they're doing everything they can to please their partners and nothing seems to be working and they're at their wits end. It's a good book for any guy to read though as much of the advice will apply in the future. It talks a lot about how being selfless is not the best move in a relationship and how this behaviour of trying to fix your marriage by being 'nice' essentially is actually dishonest and destructive to it.
Pretty much anywhere online, just search for mirror or reflective window film. Or try frosted window film.
I don't like Amazon but I have some gift cards to use up so will be going for something like this.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GC9C916/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_50o9EbRSHMCFG
It's probably a bit cheaper to go direct.
Also you can get them in different widths.
Here is the link for Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.parkflowuk.parklook
Looks like iOS will be coming soon
Amazon sells 2 or 4inch thick memory foam mattress toppers for £30-40. When I get a Berlingo I'm just going to use them rather than foam cut to size. I currently use a 2 inch double folded over to sleep guests on the floor and it is fine. one with a thick sheet should be alright but you can possibly double up.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Memory-Foam-Mattress-Topper-inch/dp/B00LTQ46XG?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_3
This app is pretty usefiul for bus times. It's hooked into the arrival time board tracking system. The free ad supported version used to be really unstable but the crashing went away when I bought it (on sale). Maybe it'll have been fixed, but it might be worth a purchase.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fatattitude.buscheckeruklite
I've got this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/West-Biking-Cycling-Hydraulic-Shimano/dp/B01FXA2IHE/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1490430736&sr=8-7
Not used it for Tekros myself but it appears to have the relevant nipples - You're welcome to borrow it if you can get some oil :)
~~Oh, and I'm also selling my copy of Native Instruments Komplete 10 that I bought for £350 though i'll be looking for £100. This comes on 10 discs so it's a bit of a pain installing it that way but I can also transfer the license to you and you can download it through Native Access~~ sold.
Yep that is solid! If you didnt want to carry a cable, locking skewers are always an option if you have quick release wheels.
These 2 are also solid options aswell and cheaper. I use an Onguard pitbull.

You don't need a data connection for GPS. AGPS will attempt to download a file to help predict where the GPS satellites can be found, but this file can be used for seven days. If you're using Android, before you leave, turn on data or WiFi, install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2 and update the AGPS data (tap, spanner, manage A-GPS state, Download), then start Google Maps and cache a map of the area(s) you'll be visiting (menu, your places, scroll to the bottom, offline areas: view all and manage, download a new offline area). Once that's done, all GPS needs is to be able to receive the GPS satellite signals on their dedicated radio frequencies.
SMS only needs data if you're sending MMS (multimedia) messages (including messages with emoji).
