Speaking from experience, you want the least number of features possible, so that there's less for you to deal with as you're running the game. The only things you really need are playlists, so that you can quickly click/tap on the kind of music you want, and random/shuffle and loop.
Like, I'm talking vanilla music simple, configured to only show playlists.
As a music player, I use Vanilla Music. That one's really customisable.

Best your going to get is Vanilla i think although Vinyl is another option.
A lot of the features you're asking for are only really offered by the top tier Audio players like Black Player, GoneMad or Poweramp though. None of them are Foss though. You may want to look at Shuttle but the Dev has abandoned it (i think) and built Shuttle V2
Unless you need some streaming service, IMHO, Vanilla Music is the best one (yes, I tried Shuttle+, Rocketplayer, Poweramp, Orpheus and some I probably forget).

I'm going to use Vanilla Music until Foobar2000 is working on Android 11. It seems speedy enough and hasn't yet conked out during playback (which is the problem Foobar2000 has with Android 11).
Vanilla. The folder selection can be as granular as you want.

A lot of people have already given suggestions but I'll just throw in Vanilla Music. It's a pretty simple music player but it's open source, has an AMOLED theme and is very lightweight.
I use Vanilla Music. Free, open source, lightweight. There are also optional add-ons to enhance the experience, but it is just a decent music player. But, I consider the Samsung default music player to be better and pretty much complete.
I keep my music organized using directories, so my favorite is Vanilla Music. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.blinkenlights.android.vanilla Has a dark theme. Uses ReplayGain. Open source.
Vanilla Music (Also on F-Droid) - only Material-design music player that I know of that supports ReplayGain. Plus it's Free and Open Source, and actively maintained.
Amaze File Manager (Also on F-Droid) - well-designed, FOSS file manager. A bit lacking if you're into cloud integration features, but does its job as a file manager well.
Overchan (Also on F-Droid) - FOSS imageboard client that supports sites from 4chan to Krautchan, 8chan, 7chan, 420chan, and a bunch of Russian ones.
I like Vanilla Music.
It is, just figured since we were talking about FOSS apps I'd link github, plus that link has nightly builds. Anyways: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.blinkenlights.android.vanilla

Vanilla Music is a super cool opensource and ad-free music player. Give it a try.
I just try this one, free open source and no ads. Seems made in Switzerland.
Vanilla Music, Free, open-source, no ads, active developer.
Vanilla Music is free and simple.
It's also available on F-Droid
I believe Vanilla Music has what you're looking for. Free and open-source.
I use this player. You can use both artist/album or folder structure. Don't know about opus, never tried.
Thanks. Found it in google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.blinkenlights.android.vanilla&hl=en
I just did a search for "android audio normalization" and got a "Five Android apps for audiophiles" link which listed an app at #2 with this screenshot.
For some reason, I think they're referring to "live" normalization as "Reply Gain" on Android. I think they reserve the term normalization for running a batch adjustment on locally stored mp3 files.
I'm honestly surprised an app like Poweramp doesn't have this feature. I remember using that app back in 2010 on my HTC EVO. I found this app when searching for Replay Gain, might be what you're looking for.
