I can definitely relate to that. When I started, I asked some of the staff to help teach me the basics, how to set up equipment, form and they gave me an idea of how to structure my workouts based on what goals I had in mind etc. Of course, not all gyms are created equal but as far as I know the staff are literally there to help. I would suggest going to them with any questions you may have.
Another helpful resource for you is your fellow gym-goers. Many of them will be happy to give you some pointers and little snippets of advice here and there.
I use an Android app called WorkIt which I will link below. It's got descriptions of exercises and workouts, has space for storing stats to track your progress, and even has some preloaded workout programs for you to get started with right off the bat.
Edit: WorkIt app links Android link iOS link
I went to college and studied computer science. However, in my college they mostly taught theory and basic java. The amount 'real world" coding skillz I learned was pretty minimal.
Everything I learned about android specific programming was self taught by reading through tutorials on Google and reading Android Developer documentation. I'm also interested in video game programming so I spent a lot of time making some small games such as space invaders etc.
For me, I learned android specific programming by creating an app called WorkIt in my spare time a few years ago. It was a pretty basic gym/workout tracking app which became somewhat popular (50-100k downloads), so I just kept on adding to it and learning as I went. I have now re-released the app with a more modern material design.
I added the app to my resume and it helped to land me an entry level job as a full-stack software engineer, and it wasn't until then that I really learned how to code.
My advice I guess is just to start programming, even if you don't know what your doing. Choose a small project you would like to do, start a project in android studio and just keep going through tutorials until you can keep adding onto the project.

I have developed my own workout tracking application because I didn't really like what was available for android. It's called WorkIt Gym Log Workout Tracker.
It's free, simple, and does everything I need (track workouts, keep notes, backup data to the cloud, view howto animataions, progress graphs, etc)
You can get the most recent version here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jimber.workit
Please check it out, also if you have any ideas on how I can improve the app, feedback is welcome!
Check out WORKIT.
WORKIT is an android app that comes with preinstalled programs (such as stronglifts 5x5, starting strength and more). But it is more flexible because you can customize your own workout programs and exercises.
WORKIT has detailed records, graphs, stats, and exercise instructions and animations. Backup, restore, and export data features, as well as timer/stopwatch and a plate racking calculator.

I've tried several different workout log applications (Android) and I just wanted to recommend Workit. I'm not affiliated in any way, I was just so annoyed by all the other apps that I wanted to let everyone know about this one, because I like it. The only thing I don't like is not being able to remove an exercise from one of the built-in workouts. I haven't tried creating my own workout yet. After doing 5x5 for a few months, I am using the PHUL workout in Workit.
I also just started last week and am coming from stronglifts - although I must admit, I did that around three years ago. I am also trying to lose weight, 5,2" and currently around 165lbs, lost 10kg by now. Anyway, I did A and B last week, and man was I sore. I started right away with barbell squats, deadlifts, benchpress, cause I would have felt weird doing it "empty". I was sitting upstairs, didn´t want to go to the toilet and pee, because stairs, lol. Did you know that the app workit has the strong curves program included already? It´s awesome, because you have alle the exercises there and can add your weights, reps, etc. There´s even a stopwatch in it (useful for the planks). Without the app I don´t know if I had already started, hehe. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jimber.workit&hl=de I have one problem though, I find it weird to do the supersets, it would mean to occupy two places in the gym and going from the bridges to the rows etc. feels strange. I just did it as normal sets. How do you handle that?
The Work-it app for android has pre-set weight programs like 5x5 and strong curves with pictures and little animations of the exercises.
You can also make custom workouts by adding in exercises from the really comprehensive database.
I tried a lot of exercise trackers and this was the one that had the least amount of fussing around.
I don't know if there's an Apple equivalent.
When I had a gym membership, I used WorkIt, which was perfect (and free!). Gave me graphs and histories of each exercise I did, broken down by sets and number of reps. Also had exercises sorted by muscle group for when I'm looking for something new to try, including animations showing how you should be doing that exercise. It's also pretty lightweight and responsive, which is good for when my cell phone signal was spotty in the gym.

You can create your routines and set days of the week to them. Then depending on which day it is you can complete all the exercises within that routine, so no need to copy paste every day.
Also if you need to compare it to the previous session, you can see what you did last time with a simple swipe.
