The Microsoft Office tablet apps are the best, but if you can't run those or don't want to pay for full features, WPS office is a very capable free alternative in my experience (though it doesn't run well on my underpowered Nook HD+)
Sorry. WPS Office for Android
> "Read PDF files, Read memory, Zoom , Full-screen, Open encrypted PDF documents, Add bookmarks, and Customize bookmark names. Save your spot on PDF doc when file is closed and reopened."
WPS Office + PDF is a free, full-fledged office app for Android. The one problem is, it's from a Chinese company (oh no!) but it can open .DOCX, sync to Dropbox/Google Drive, and is an Editor's Choice app awarded by Google.
Jotterpad Writer (formerly Jotterpad X) has a really good reputation from writers. It happens to be on sale now, too. Supports syncing, .docx, and markdown. Not 100% sure if it supports formatting like italics, because I'm a markdown fan myself.
I like WPS Office's PDF viewer.
It allows copying text, zooming in, changing the PDF background, dark mode, search for text, annotations, and I'm sure there's more.
A WORKAROUND:
Open one document in Microsoft Word app & second document in the "free" WPS Office - Free Office Suite for Word,PDF,Excel app
WPS will read & save in microsoft doc format (i.e.. avoiding Google docs conversion to their own format]
"free": it will bug you to buy missing fonts - you don't need them
PS:
I take it you don't want to work online by opening https://onedrive.live.com/ in two windows in the chrome browser and work on your word docs there ...
ALT+[ & ALT+] to align windows next to each other.
WPS office is so good! Much smoother scrolling through documents than Google's or Microsoft's apps. I love its auto save/recovery, I use it for groceries, I can highlight what I want and if the app is closed my highlights are not lost, at the same time the document does not get overwritten. Unfortunately they offer it as a service, I would totally buy it if it was a once off payment.
I use WPS Office + PDF and Google Docs. I used to use OfficeSuite, but switched two tablets ago... don't recall why. WSP I use when I don't have wifi (Google docs doesn't have to use wifi, but you have to plan ahead).

.ods can be open in normal excel. USeless to convert it.
Also, .ods can be imported in google doc.
Also, .ods can be openned in Android WPS the best office software for mobile IMO : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wps.moffice_eng&hl=en
Personally I'm glad if Google were to step back from ChromeOS on laptops and tablets, because the "all in the cloud"-approach only reminds me of that very creepy "One Tablet Per Student" episode on Person of Interest and the ultimate invasion of privacy it represents. Moreover all the assumptions about the capabilities of those tablets, including the Windows ones, were already somewhat undermined by the discussion of their limited performance on a recent show by Scott Johnson. There are however already good office compatible suites on Android like the one developed by Kingsoft.
Requiring all those features in one app is what will make it heavy. Newer Android versions have a built-in PDF viewer.
I reviewed several all-in-one office suites and found them all lacking. I settled on the Free Office apps that work independently.
if the update removes wps office... wps office saves in a proprietary format?
Can't use the one from the store? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wps.moffice_eng&hl=en_US
Sia WPS Office che Office Suite sono sui 32MB
WPS Office. Fully meets your requirements. Best used with an ad-blocker or completely disconnecting it from Internet access.
My recent critiques of Android office suite tryouts. Note that I was concerned with offline text editing and PDF conversion.
EDIT:
Try WPS Office + PDF https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wps.moffice_eng It does what MS Office do so you may like it.
I use WPS Office for all document related stuff. It has a nice PDF viewer.
Maybe? It's a slightly sketch PDF app that you probably installed.

But it's got 100M+ installs, so probably fine

Microsoft's office apps are in the format of Windows (.exe) which is not supported in Chrome OS.
You have to either use the android version (need Microsoft 365) or the Desktop Version (office.live.com)
I don't remember when I used Office since I moved from office to Google Drive. It was free & compatible with Chrome OS. I have never paid for Microsoft 365 as soon as I started using Google Drive. It even gives more storage options than onedrive (Onedrive - 1/5 GB | Google Drive - 15 GB)
Google Docs, Sheets & slides are great & I would use it....
You can use alternatives from Linux like Libreoffice, WPS Office (Would recommend WPS)
WPS Office is an alternative of MS Office. It also gives a desktop experience in the Play Store app. You can use either the Play Store App or the Linux Version (Translate the page to English).
Hope that helps you.
I've been happy with the free WPS Office
[PS I haven't had to buy any extra fonts yet]
I like WPS Office. It looks good, it's way more than just a PDF Reader and it's totally free without any ads.
i don't exactly get what you mean by Word Processing apps, but i use wps for everything

How about WPS, I know ad is very annoying, but still good for all office documents and pdf file. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wps.moffice_eng
