In their case, and in the case of most cyclists, if you've been doing this for a while, you start to be familiar with the appropriate RPM. If your bike doesn't support cadence then they sell bluetooth cadence monitors that you can attach to crank arms or your shoe.
Cronometer for the win.
It has an online interface as well (which is much nicer than the app). The things I love about this app:
I've tried a few, but this one is by far the best I've come across.
This arrived on Thursday. Used it thrice. Works fine for me and it a decent price. But there are for sure better ones.

With an oversized seat and the wahoo cadence sensor so I can use the peloton iPhone app too as an alternative (there’s a two month free trial which goes back to one month in February)
It’s pretty sweet. Really basic but I’ve gotten some good workouts on it. I need to figure out how to make the handlebars more secure Bc they shift a bit when I’m really going for it. Great iPad/iPhone holder section too
Yoga blocks are my best friends for yoga practices. For me, gripping doesn’t cause pain; however, flat palms kill me. With the blocks, I can bring the floor up to me for better posture and prevent nerve pain. For your desk, I highly recommend wrist bean bags.
I bought this and it’s worked great. The tv I used apple fitness + with doesn’t have airplay so this has saved me from having to buy an Apple TV.

Waterrower Oxbridge (I think)
Bought this bundle which came with the SmartRow pulley pre-installed as well as the longer beams (I’m 6’1”) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0815VW3C7
How much: too much. $1,700 total including taxes.
I personally really like it, and the looks were part of the purchase decision. If don’t care about looks or noise, get something else like the Concept. If you do care about the looks and noise, I do suggest the Waterrower. It fits into any living space nicely design wise and the sound with the water is much more pleasant than other rowing machines.
This thing really shines with the SmartRow app, giving you much more detailed and easily trackable data right on your smart device. https://smartrow.fit/#/home

I had trouble finding some too, finally found some 10lbs on Amazon. Before that I was using old 4lbs I had and a couple of kettlebells for the single arm workouts. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015WE0XCS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
We bought this Sunny bike specifically because it had the longest adjustability for any model from Sunny. My husband is 6'7" and it works for him.
I bought this one off of Amazon and am quite happy with it:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00467H5YW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
TailHappyTV reviews lots of bikes on YouTube. I think he is 6'5" and said he had to lower the seat on this particular bike.
I've only done one strength workout so far, but I bought a single bowflex adjustable dumbell years ago and just modify the workouts to use single arm movements - if you can find a single adjustable like this - that might be cheaper than a set? Mine goes up to 90 but i doubt i'll ever need that high of weight with the AF+ workouts, that's more for single arm bench and heavy rows with a bench to support. Hope you find something affordable and that works for you!
I am cheap and grabbed this. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DR9GS7L/
You can certainly tell it's a budget bike, but it works well enough for what I need.
I have used a cheap dollar store clip stand for about a decade now. It looks similar to this:

I don't own one yet, but this is what I plan on getting.
Inspire Fitness IC1.5 has been a great bike for me over the last 18 months, especially for $399 at Costco. It has its own app which is a mess, but you can use it with AF+ using the Medium, Hard, All-Out judgment methodology or with Peloton Digital by connecting the bike's metrics via Bluetooth to qdomyos-zwift and converting the Inspire ratings to Peloton's in-app.
Both work great. I've been very happy with the bike.

I got this one as the rectangular and found it helped me build my tolerance a bit when placed over a Pilates / yoga mat for extra padding. But it is a little squishy so it was a beginner step.

I have short arms and had trouble reaching the handles on my spin bike. Apparently this isn't uncommon. Some fixes include cutting pool noodles and placing them over the handlebars, using a barbell squat pad (I have this one - https://www.amazon.com/Shoulder-Protective-Ergonomic-Squatting-Weightlifting/dp/B07SFZBLCF ) and rigging up extensions with various tools. I read, I think on the reddit Peloton group, that someone used a handlebar extender that clamps to the actual handlebars, then put a lightweight pipe through it.

https://www.amazon.com/Premium-Large-Exercise-Mat-Non-Slip/dp/B077XN3Q4D
I have the S36 mat as well. It's nice (but more expensive than the same-size Gorilla mat, which I have not tried). It weighs about 20 pounds I think, and obviously remains four feet long when you roll it. So it's certainly portable but a bit cumbersome. I don't think it would work in your bag (well, it looks like it'll go in there, but would stick out above your head as it is 20 inches wider than the Nike mat). Also the underside of it has a raised dot pattern that I expect would be tough to get all the sand out of, if you were to use it directly on the beach.

I bought this in December. I don’t know if Amazon sells the exact version I have anymore. But the tower is magnetic and quiet. It’s got a phone holder which I use for Apple fitness plus workouts. I’d recommend. It’s not some professional set up but I’m no professional.
They break my rhythm and clang.
I still use them but just for 20 or 25 lbs because I don't have individual dumbbells.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B091YNF3L1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Overall, I am satisfied with the purchase, especially at the price point. Like some of its reviews indicate, I do wish it had a bit more resistance built into it. I do not use it as much as I thought I would, but appreciate the variety it brings to my workouts.
Good luck!
>a second hand recumbent stationary bike / rower.
That's interesting--is it something like this? (I have a Schwinn recumbent bike, and it's nice, but I wish I'd known about dual-purpose machines...)
I use the Magnetic Rowing Machine by Sunny health. We got ours on Black Friday for $180 around 4 years ago, and I see it online now between $225-260.
I use this rower twice a week, and my husband uses it about once a week. So it gets used consistently every week.
My personal review is that I like it, it gets the job done and I feel like I get a good workout and can follow along on apple fitness plus very easily.
Some of the cons are that you can’t see your strokes per minute, and the digital board to track distance is not very intuitive, so I just don’t rely on it, and mostly just follow the instructions from the coaches. It can also get very loud as it gets older, but honestly I just use my headphones and it’s fine ( I live in a house, so not sure how it would be in an apartment).
The pros is that it’s cheap and it gets the job done! We initially got it to see if would enjoy rowing, which turns out we really do! This one is easy to move around so we just keep it standing against a wall, and pull it out when we are going to use it. Because it’s magnetic you can up the resistance, so I normally do level 6 and the husband uses it at a 9, so you can share with different people regardless of what level they want to use it at.
Since we’ve had this for about 4 years we are now trying to save to get an actual water rower over the next year. I feel like we definitely got our moneys worth with this one.
I totally recommend it if you are not sure if you like rowing and don’t want to spend too much money on a concept2 or water rower yet.

Just looked….I bought it in 2016. Love it.
Training Tall on YouTube has reviews of cheaper rowers on his channel that are pretty thorough. I don’t have personal experience with anything other than a Concept2, but if was going to go budget, I would stay away from something with a giant tank of water that could leak or need to be cleaned out regularly.
I have an under $500 magnetic resistance stationary bike and would probably look in that direction for a rower. It’s not going to feel as good or be as consistent as a Concept2 or higher end water rower, but it also probably won’t break, or fuck up your body/house.
If you have a costco membership, they sell one for $400 I believe and have an extremely generous return policy. Technically, some of the ones on Amazon have a 30-90 day return policy too.
You can also find Concept2 knockoffs on Amazon for about $550. Initial quality seems fine… long term, who knows?

They have Schwinn indoor bikes that are used in Apple Fitness workouts available in some UK stores. Of course, they’re double or more the budget you mention but seem to be of high quality if you’re serious about training and making that investment. One of the models is also available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07WDC7QRJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_MA72D1A5Q0YYEKPWW8DY
Nothing will overlay into the fitness app. If your bike doesn’t have one built in I recommend this, Wahoo RPM Cycling Cadence Sensor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L9XNFPY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I’ve got a barebones Sunny bike which I love and using this cadence sensor I can watch the video on my phone or iPad and it works for me.

Maybe it's cause I have lighter ones that it might be cheaper. I use Amazon Basics Neoprene Coated Dumbbell 3 lbs, 5 lbs and 8 lbs dumbbells (not that strong unfortunately lol) 😅
I live in an old house with hardwood floors. Everything shakes when I jump. I use thick puzzle mats. They help to absorb the impact and dampen the sound. Plus, I'm old so they're easier on my knees when doing strength or yoga moves that involve kneeling. They're great for HIIT. Mine are from Amazon, but there are plenty of similar options.

Thank you (and everyone else) for the great replies. I am looking to row primarily for weight loss. My excess weight is 98% in my midsection. I have been using Apple Fitness plus regularly for about 8 months and would like to add some variety to my workouts. I am also looking to improve flexibility through my back and loosen up my hips more - that is how I landed on rowing.
Problem with the concept 2 is that it is a bit out of the range I am comfortable spending considering I am just starting out. I don't necessarily have a problem with paying for a high quality machine, but considering I am just starting out I would rather be a bit more conservative. This is the specific unit I am considering on Amazon....

I got suckered into BeachBody by a friend after I had my 2nd kid, and didn't stick with it for long, but the two main things I got from that short-lived experience were 1) work out every morning before anything can get in my way--I do it mostly for mental health purposes at this point!, and 2) the container system for the 21 Day Fix really helped me understand correct portions for my meals. You can get cheap containers on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Day-Portion-Control-Container-kit) ... once you calculate how many containers of each thing you should eat a day, you can plan out your meals. Really planning that out helped me, too, I'd plan the whole week down to my snacks. Then I'd portion everything out ahead of time and didn't think about it again the rest of the week, I'd just pull out my snacks for the day and that was that. I started making better choices from it...instead of a whole bowl of baked ziti (and zero veggies), I'd have a yellow container of baked ziti, and then roast a bunch of veggies and fill up a green container of that. And it was delicious!!! I don't use the containers much anymore, but I still have in the back of my head that most of my meals should be veggies, snacks should be fruit and a protein, and it's okay to have a treat every once in awhile. :) Good luck!
These are the ones I bought - https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BXMCNM8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The price has varied pretty widely. I ended up buying a total of 4 sets over the course of last summer and this spring for when my husband and I work out together. The price has been as low as $35 and as high as $50. Right now they seem to be pretty reasonable.

it was this one and i've had it since July 202 according to Amazon: This price has almost doubled since I bought it, at that price I probably would have not bought the smart row pulley and just bought a water rower

I bought this iPhone holder for my bike. It’s pretty easy to install and remove and holds the phone well.
Giving some serious thought to the Marcy NS-6023RW. l don't need a treadmill because I can go outside and walk even when the weather's not great, and I don't need a bike because I can put my real bicycle on a training stand for indoors exercise. This is one of the less costly water-resistance rowers (like the kind that the AF+ trainers use), and has a decent rating. Any comparisons/opinions on water rowers vs. magnetic or fan?
It's this one (this also comes with the sport cap): https://www.amazon.com/Hydro-Flask-Stainless-Vacuum-Insulated/dp/B01GW2G92W/
No problem, I got this one off Amazon for ~$80 and it works pretty well. There’s another one for $160 but I don’t know how much better it is for double the price.
I use the Amazon Basics dumbbell set and it works alright and isn't a whole lot of money. (Although I paid way less for them in 2018.) I plan on using it until I can get my hands on some of the Helix weights.

If I remember correctly, I had paid around $300 for it.
I would say 6 on a scale of 10 - it doesn’t show RPMs, the LCD monitor is flimsy, the one I have doesn’t have a proper stand for iPad and the seat is uncomfortable. It’s decent for the price I paid so I can’t complain much but I am sure there are better options available now for around the same price.
We have a C2 at home, and I clamp this on it. Works great if your gym will allow you to use it (or if there's something else nearby to clamp it onto).

I bought this Sunny bike (when it was $475) about a month ago and it's been working very well for classes. I did a lot of research and went with Sunny knowing that if you get a lemon you might not get things fixed without a big headache, but I took a chance for the savings over other brands and have been happy with it so far.
I just ordered the Sunny Health & Fitness Spin Bike Belt Drive Indoor Cycle Exercise Bike - SF-B1002 for $349 (Amazon) based on the reviews. Same brand but seems to do a decent job much cheaper. It is supposed to arrive on Thursday, I'll update what I think of it then.

It's not perfect but it does a decent job and it's cheap. Not using a cadence sensor yet- AF+ doesn't seem to require one.
I bought these before the pandemic and I really love them. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J8S38LW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_XdI2FbWPFFD01?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Also note: pre pandemic pricing was $277 but even at $600, they are more than worth it when you consider all the combinations you can have(5-50 at 5lb increments).
I wouldn’t recommend putting your whole weight on them like a renegade row, for instance, but they work fine for goblet squats. I also like how they only increase in size when you add weights — no unwieldy Frankenbell here.
In one of the workouts the trainer said she was using 20lb for heavy weights and I found that worked for me. I use 5-10 light, 10-15 medium, and 20-25 heavy. It really depends what muscle group you’re working. If I’m doing chest presses, I bump them up to 35.
I bought this bike specifically to use with AF+ and I love it. Smooth, quiet, and easy to put together. If you want cadence and such you can find sensors to attach to it for around $80 that can communicate to your iPhone.
