If you use silicone cups (like the mini loaf size) in it for the things you want to heat, that should get you on track.

No, haha! There is one slice of cheese. What you are seeing that looks liek cheese is probably the Turkey. This is a turkey, salami, and cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread with some Lusty Monk spicy mustard. The box itself is a lunchbots stainless steel bento box. I grabbed it on sale from amazon a couple years ago. I think the price has gone up since then. Not OP, but I do own a handful of these containers for work. I think they're great and highly recommend them :3 You can pick them up from Amazon through https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z38CX3J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RrczFbDNWJBZ8
I don’t have a Mr. Bento, but I checked out Amazon and they have some videos about how to use the product.

Hope that helps...
Went to Japan for my honeymoon a few years ago and while waiting for my husband to finish his class I went shopping at their version of the dollar store (hyaku yen - or 100 yen stores.) You can find similar on Amazon though: https://www.amazon.com/Torune-Friends-Sandwich-Cutters-Animals/dp/B00SSQ6JT4/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1515709118&sr=8-4&keywords=cookie+mold+bento
or
I don't know if I'm the best person to do a tutorial. I just follow some basic bento guidelines like utilize all the colors of the rainbow (for health reasons too), and the 1 carb, 1 protein, 2 veggies, 1 fruit, 1 dessert (optional) rule for all the ones I make. The other stuff are just punch out stuff from my accessories so I can't claim any artistic talent for that.
looks like this . sooooo tasty
Funny, before even finishing reading your post I was going to recommend rei, cabelas, or the camping section in walmart. They often have the exact same things at very disparate prices.
Amazon carries tons of bento accessories. Refillable mini sauce bottles, seasoning containers, Silicone muffin cups are handy for dividing. Egg molds. Amazon has that same item you showed from rei too.
If all else fails, Amazon also carries a lot of the Shirakiku varieties. These in particular are what I have right now, though I purchased them locally: https://www.amazon.com/Hachimitsu-Umeboshi-Honey-Pickled-Plum/dp/B00886N4D8/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=shirakiku+umeboshi&qid=1554134852&s=grocery&sr=1-1

I know most stores refrigerate them, but being heavily preserved, they're pretty shelf stable...I know when I was visiting Hawaii, Longs (Walgreens) had them out on shelves with no refrigeration, and they were just fine...I flew some home with me cross country, and they didn't suffer in the least.
Hope OP responds and it is easier to buy now, but I used to have the same one and I got it ages ago at a convenience store in China. It came as a set with some gummy hamburgers.
EDIT: OMG found it on Amazon! here
They're for holding condiments and sauces. I got them on Amazon, along with the bento.
My SO bought them for me as a small gift...she ordered them from Amazon. ~$4-6 US (dependent on their dynamic pricing and Prime membership) for 15 bottles in various sizes.
The box contains chicken, broccoli and spring onions with a soy, ginger and garlic sauce and some Udon noodles, along with baby plum tomatoes to snack on.
(No fruit is included because that gets delivered to the office)
OMFG I LOVE THAT GUY.
The squirrel and the bear are from a Mama's Assist set that also came with a whale and a seal. I got it on Amazon but my local Japanese market just expanded their bento section and I the set there too!

They're silicone cupcake liners from Amazon.
Thanks! I like to use the muffin papers because they're easy and cheap. As for the containers, I got them when I was in Japan recently but you can also get them on Amazon as well. The plastic containers are my super shitty last choice alternatives to when my husband forgets his actual bento box at work.
Furikake is easy to make at home. My aunt would make it all the time after making dashi. I would suggest to use mushroom powder instead of katsuobushi (The fish) for that umami.
Admittedly I have never done this with furikake, but I do use mushroom as substitute for stocks in hot pots, soups, etc for vegan/vegetarian friends when they come over.
Here is a link to shiitake mushroom powder. This company also makes others. I will say it is also easy to make your own at home with dried mushrooms and a spice grinder. Best of luck. mushroom powder amazon
It's "instant pickles!" You basically throw salt and lemon juice onto cucumber and cabbage, rub it in, and wait 10 minutes.
Since it's the very first bento, you can actually see it with the sample Amazon gives you: https://www.amazon.com/Just-Bento-Cookbook-Everyday-Lunches/dp/1568363931
Not OP, but amazon has them and in general a great selection of bento products.
I did a lot of food prep on Sunday so that I didn't have to think too much about it during the rest of the week haha. And it's this one! I've seen it in other places, but I ordered mine from Amazon. I'm having to stop myself from ordering a million different boxes, they're all so cute
Yeah!! Warping issue notwithstanding, I absolutely love those boxes. Plus there's such a wealth of cool bentos to look at, from the Clubento boxes on the official site (http://us.monbento.com/en/club/photos/index/category/all/?limit=100) to the Tumblr tag (https://www.tumblr.com/tagged/monbento) to this place. Best cure for insomnia I've found so far! (And I don't mean that in a snarky way; I just find looking at bentos really soothing.)
Here's the link to the amazon page for it.
The bag was probably the selling point for me, it's perfect. It's insulated, and comes with small matching pouch bag with a metal set of chopsticks and spoon.
I have both and it's more about the shape of what you want to eat. If you are eating a traditional Japanese bento (rice with sides) the original a pretty big box. The Monbento Square perfectly holds a standard sandwich on one side and has half for other food, so if you're looking to bring a lot of standard western food with you, pick the Square. I don't think either one is big enough for a standard salad though, because lettuce takes up so much space. I use this when I want to bring a salad. https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Grips-Leakproof-Salad-Container/dp/B014FYZU9C/ref=ice\_ac\_b\_dpb?dchild=1&keywords=oxo+salad&qid=1622803075&sr=8-4
So I’m looking for a bento to use as a lunchbox, and I need one that has an ice pack, but it’s so hard to find… I found this one that has an ice pack, but it doesn’t have a utensil tray, and it isn’t nice looking like those plain black or white ones with bamboo lids that look so stylish.
Ideally I’d want one with 2 levels, 2 adjustable/removable dividers, a plain black or white design with a wooden lid, a dipping sauce container, a utensil tray with a spoon and fork, and an ice pack placed between the levels. Bonus points if it somehow has a handle, too, but that’s a low priority for sure.
Aw thank you! I really have to focus on making the food look nice or I’ll be tempted to eat fast food! (x
I would love to help! It has been like four or five years so I hope they’re the same, in my history it says these are it!! :) I hope that helps!
I put them in neoprene lunch bags. Really durable. I got theirs on Amazon.

We've got a star fish and a hedgehog. They look exactly like the picture. I have to kinda stuff the bento in and stretch the fabric around the bottom a bit to set it perfectly upright, but that kinda doesn't matter. The bentos don't leak even if they get a little kicked around.
I really like this box, it's lasted us three years so far and nothing has broken on it. This is an ECOlunchbox, I got it from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0040MH642/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_nvZtybC1YQGXS
Nice, I didn't catch that edit of yours, sorry.
Actually, the link that is still in your comment is the knock-off version, it doesn't look to me that Amazon sells the real Sushezi or you aren't guaranteed to get one depending on the reseller. Here are the reviews for that one stating the obvious knock-off/quality control issues, 8% 1/5 star reviews. I was about to order it too, but I won't take the chance.
Edit: Where'd you snag yours? :D
I suspect it’s a rectangular lunch set from Lock&Lock like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0089W0SOY/ref=psdc_12900081_t2_B00466I4R0
ETA: I have 2 sets like this and really like them. I just stick the boxes into a larger insulated tote—I lost the bag it came with. These boxes are pretty small however, but you can find slightly bigger rectangular and square sizes on amazon too.
Thanks! Yeah, I love that the divider floats, so you can move it to match whatever the proportions are!
You'll be happy to know it's on Amazon and pretty affordable!

Sure, I got mine on amazon. I love them for this and use them all the time.
Thank you!!! I bought them through amazon and sadly they are not edible (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`)
Mustard and maple syrup salmon, roasted delicata squash, pomegranate seeds, almonds, and this Korean BBQ pork jerky I'm now obsessed with.
I almost got a monbento box, but the price tag did kinda scare me. I ended up getting a Bentgo Box off of amazon instead, and I'm pretty happy with it. Although it doesn't come with chopsticks, just a plastic knife, spoon, and fork. No (re)moveable dividers, but the top container is divided in two sections.
I just came off a low-carb, moderate protein and fat diet. Try cauliflower rice! (riced cauliflower?) Salads are also a nice option and it gives you more of a reason to eat some spinach. Leftover frittatas might be a nice change too. I Breathe I'm Hungry is one of my favorite low-carb recipe sites! I think most of their meatball recipes would probably fit in a bento nicely.
-Chicken nuggets made from recipe in the Just Bento Cookbook with ground chicken, grated celery, and grated carrots.
-Sweet potato fries made using this recipe. I didn't have dill, so the yogurt sauce in my lunch is just plain yogurt, lemon juice, and some tahini.
-celery/peanut butter and grapes/blueberries are pretty self explanatory
It's canned pineapple. The fresh pineapple selection didn't look good at my local grocer :(

These are stackable and come with a bag, and apparently can go in the microwave, but it’s a different design/tone than the one you linked. They also look massive.
thermos makes these stackable, slim ones, but they definitely can’t go in a microwave.
If you're still looking, try this glass one. They suggest that you take the lid off before microwaving though. These are 5 cups, but they also have a 3.4 cup version.
Two of these 5-cup ones fit perfectly in a Titan lunch box. They discontinued the ones I have but the new ones look slightly bigger. They are more expensive now... but Costco has two for $43 right now.
Wouldn't recommend it though, the utensil broke quickly
Take a look at this.

I bought this for my daughter nine years ago, when she was in first grade, and she’s still using it today. When properly set up I can make her a hot lunch (with not-hot components like salad and such) at 6:30am and the temperature is still fantastic when she eats lunch five hours later.
I do have some reusable ones that I also use. They are similar to these😊: https://www.amazon.com/CuteZCute-P-3080-Bento-Green-Cream/dp/B00B4NNQVM/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=30PS15R4CWLEL&keywords=bento+sauce+container&qid=1657746741&sprefix=bento+sauce%2Caps%2C220&sr=8-3
This one fits your dimensions with enough room on top to carry a juice box or a packet of trail mix/nuts/dessert/etc.
I've got this one, and I like it a lot! Not all the compartments are watertight, but some of them are. Just pack with care! It does a great job of keeping soups hot at the bottom.

I got the first one for $17 on Amazon a few years ago. But last week I found 2 more for $6 at Marshall’s.
This one is pretty popular in this sub and I have one myself! (There’s a post I made if you scroll back a bit) It’s light and holds a lot in 3 different compartments, the biggest of which can be split in half as well. It comes with an insulated bag and silverware that fits inside too! I will say that since heavier bentos are much more durable, this one I imagine isn’t quite as durable as maybe a wooden or metal one would be. But I’ve had no issues with mine so far! Definitely recommend!

Both are about 3 inches wide, clamp together securely and are a nice size for lunch. I commute on a bike and they go in my pack and don't seem to kind the jostling.
I love it, it's got a little tray for steaming veggies at the same time as your rice. It also has a delay function so I can set it before I go to bed and it'll be ready in the morning for me to pack my bento.
Also got these molds the other day and they are much more cute than my usual saran wrap method.
For the cutlet, I usually just put it in after searing iy at 350 F with a thermometer in the thickest part and watch until it gets to temp, but the air fryer could totally work great and get it nice and crispy.
It isn't exactly a mini rice cooker but we just bought this aroma rice cooker and it's fantastic. The rice ends up beautifully fluffy and delicious every time, and the steamer basket is really convenient for bento prep. Start your rice, and with about 5-7 minutes left on the timer pop open the lid and drop in the steamer basket with some veggies or pot stickers inside. They'll cook while the rice finishes. Very convenient.
Also, bento&co is a great bento company. We got my husband's bento from there. It looks like a traditional wooden bento but it's made from plastic and is microwave and dishwasher safe, which was very important to us. We also got a few other accessories from there, like textured chopsticks good for noodles and an onigiri holder for extra snacks since he's a big eater.

This box is available on Amazon. I ordered one for my fiancé and it was so nice that I purchased one for myself too! It allows you to take one or both compartments based on how much food you want that day, it’s microwave safe, and also comes with silverware and adjustable dividers :)
I think without a color recommendation my preliminary look on amazon led me tothisand I think this one is cute but also very practical. It says it's for kids but that's actually quite large for a kid's meal. This is grown-up size for sure.
I have this one and I love it. It’s fully dishwasher safe, all the compartments come out, and without its lid it’s microwave safe. It also comes with chopsticks in the lid so you never forget them!

I'm guessing you mean something like this? This is actually the bento box I have. I like it because the bottom part has a fairly tight fitting cover over it so if I happen to have some saucier food down there it wont leak. (Note that if it tips over it may leak a little, but not as bad as tipping over soup). If you don't have much storage space in your kitchen the collapsible bento would be good for you. This one holds like 640 ml total, so if you eat a lot you may need a bigger bento. You can also definitely browse Amazon or Bento and Co for different types of bento boxes (lid with clasps, wooden bento box, collapsible, the tray-like bentos from Bentgo, etc) and choose one you think you'll use. Definitely don't buy the $90 wooden bento boxes, but $15-$30 should get you a good bento box to start off with.

I actually dislike them since I can’t really stack them in the cupboard but they do prevent leakage between partitions.
I found several on Amazon. Just search for 2 compartment bento boxes. I like this one, but if if that one (or any of the others) work for you, you might consider a separate container that fits inside a regular bento box.
Something like this vacuum food jar would be something to consider. It can keep food hot or cold for several hours. Theres no space for a thermos though. If that’s super important, you might want to seek out a vintage style lunchbox. [Shopgoodwill](shopgoodwill.com) has quite a few available along with the classic thermos.
I got the monbento a few weeks back and it is perfect for my needs. It's leakproof so I put it in my bag with my laptop with no worries and I can heat up one container in the microwave. As for size, the 2 boxes together would be way too much for a lunch alone, but if you want to bring snacks with you as I do, then it's perfect for 7-8 school days. Here's some ideas of my portions: https://instagram.com/bentotoday/
It’s Thermos brand, just called “Bento box that can cook rice”. You might be able to find it by product number, which is JBS-360. I got mine on Amazon when they had a sale, listing is here. I wouldn’t pay full price for it, but between the sale and points, I got it for less than ¥2000, which is fair, I think. Thermos stuff lasts a long time — my soup jar is a thermos, and I’ve had it for years and it’s great.
Mizkan Yuzu Citrus Flavored Dressing 250mL, 2 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XSD3L4R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apan_glt_fabc_A0CAK9ABY3KH2DKJSH4A?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It is also pretty calorie friendly. Only 2 tablespoons for 40 calories! I usually end up only using 1 tablespoon and that's enough for a small salad.
Though, if I could just give me a few yuzu, I could make the dressing from scratch, it's very similar to the sesame dressing that is used in Hiyashi Chuka.
So I tried to make them by hand a while ago and they failed miserably… I invested in these onigiri molds and they have 2 sizes and they’re super easy to use! I highly recommend.
I’ve also looked for insulated bento boxes, but I honestly haven’t really been able to find anything at all that’s large enough for an adult sized meal. For all of your other things though, I’ve had a lot of luck with this bento box. It’s completely leakproof, including between compartments, and it’s a great size to carry around in my backpack (I’m a college student). I’ve had some luck just sticking it in a soft lunchbox without much shape to it for the insulation, so the lunchbox doesn’t really take up too much additional space.
I second the recommendation for the Ultimate Bento book! I bought that (it was only $9) and some cute punches for raw veggies. I don’t have children, so I’m just preparing them for myself and my fiancé, but we love them.
I’m sure u/Wanderhoof will have some great suggestions as well. I love seeing their bento on here regularly. Best wishes!
It is obscenely huge.

I got it cheaper from an online thrift bookstore (as a Christmas gift for myself!), but in case you were interested I figured the Amazon page was a good place to start. I bought my first one a few weeks ago from amazon. It's been really nice. It's not the most elegant but it suits my needs and was quite a bit cheaper than the monBento I wanted lol. I'm a larger guy and it holds plenty of food for me and is water tight, microwave and dishwasher safe, and includes utensils and a sauce cup.
There are lots of options out there so thinking of your needs would be a good start. There's glass options, stainless steel, wood, and plastic (that I know of). There's also lots of places to get these. I have one from Amazon (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00W0UFG52/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_5gBGFb8TWPTQG) and one from BentoCo (https://en.bentoandco.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwt4X8BRCPARIsABmcnOpXPN37PQnaE1BBhD3HMwFETCvmq37WhKZ36DoVm3B5Po_0oPjF14UaAuWbEALw_wcB).
The Amazon one is pretty good overall and quite large compared to some bentos. I think it's about 1000ml. The bundle I got from bento co I couldn't find but that is their site. They ship from Japan so it can take a while. I personally shop when there are sales because it can be a bit pricey but I really like their stuff (and they have lots of cute accessories😊). The bento I got from there is smaller (to help with portion control), about 700-750ml.
Anything can serve as a bento really. I think the most important things are size (you want enough food) and if your food needs to be heated (from what I know, traditionally they're not). I hope this ramble was helpful and you have lots of fun with bento.
Recently I was inspired by u/Kogaan’s post here using this same bento box, and decided to buy it myself! I found it on Amazon here!
No real recipe here for the rice, I just made a simple pilaf with carrots, onions, scallions, mushrooms and garlic, seasoned them with paprika, s&p, thyme, and some cayenne. Cooked some jasmine rice right in the pan and done!
Also, if anyone was looking for a box that fits a tube of gogurt, here you go! 😂
Yeah, wouldnt recommend soup lol (they have insulated bowl bento for that though! I use it in the autumn/winter) but I have stored yogurt, pudding, saucy greens, and (thick) chili in mine with the divider cups. It's never leaked. With the seals and such, the lid fits very well, so I'm not worried about spills. I've knocked my bento bag over in class, and had it flop around in my car, but it still hasn't leaked. So I'd say it's pretty leak-proof. For chopsticks, I think Monbento has a pair of collapsible ones along with their cutlery, but it's probably cheaper and just as good to get whatever other brand is on Amazon! Cutlery isnt as hit-or-miss as the boxes themselves, just check reviews to make sure the container properly closes and you're gold. Other thing I would recommend getting is some sort of bag to hold your bento/cutlery. There are the common plain cloth bags with different designs (https://www.amazon.com/MB-Pochette-black-white-bento/dp/B005LUCXRC/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=monbento+bento+bag&qid=1586742309&sr=8-1), and also ones that are insulated. (I have one from this brand https://www.amazon.com/Pouch-Type-Insulated-22x11-5x16cm-Cool-Warm-Skater/dp/B07HGYKQYN/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=sumikko+gurashi+bento+bag&qid=1586742220&sr=8-5 that just has a different design. Mine was cheaper though so you can probably look further and find a cheaper one with prime.)
Thanks! It is glass, yep! I really love them! So far.. zero complaints!

There are many variations, but I use a small insulated lunch bag, which came with a thin reusable ice pack. This is not the exact one I have, but is the same type. There are many variations from many companies. You can slide a couple of this type of ice pack in between items in your insulated bag, and it will be cool 4-5 hours later. You can optionally fill a small plastic bottle with a drink about 3/4 full and freeze it. Put it in frozen, and it will keep things cool.
