The soil is bonsai soil, Tiny Root Tropical Blend. Top 1/2 inch only. The rest is a blend. The first one I planted in a mix 1/3 promix BX and 2/3 Bonsai soil. The water retention was a bit more than what I was looking for. It might be just right once it foliates. Since purchasing the bonsai soil I learned of some cheaper alternatives. I cut the mix with Montmorillonite Clay (Safe T Sorb) for the next three.
I plan two more, but I pushing up against the cold to get one more harvest.
Ps I was thinking of potting in The Mix - think this will work? https://www.amazon.com/Noot-Pre-Hydrated-Mycorrhizae-Fertilizer-Houseplant/dp/B08TRB3N8S/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?crid=54D82WP1YOJN&keywords=the+mix+soil&qid=1660690603&sprefix=%2Caps%2C53&sr=8-6
It was this one by moistenland, it's been working pretty well so far! Not too hard to setup
I dunno about specifically for bonchi's. I use the same nutrients for all my plants. I started using it cause I saw khan Starr use it in one of his early videos. Seems to work really really well.

They have been awesome! See my other post...
Seems expensive at first, but a heck of a lot cheaper than "real" bonsai pots that could be that much or more for a single pot. And i think the aesthetics are decent and the functionality makes up for any lost aesthetics.
The pots are rarely visible as these plants live year-round like this.
The pots are regular generic square pots from a local hydroponic store and the text has been written with a Dymo. Sometimes, the most simple things are the best :-)
this is a little late but would a soil like this work well? peppers are tropical right?
