Yes, if he continues to play the game on the Xbox then upgrade to maybe a Thrustmaster HOTAS.

A decent option is the saitech / logitech throttle paired with some custom 737 handles. Just bare in mind both engines with be on one axis and cannot be split unless you buy another logitech throttle, then you will have 6 overall axis.

Unfortunately, seems the fall update will only include support for Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) headsets, not general VR headsets like Rift and alike. See https://www.flightsimulator.com/july-30th-2020-development-update/
> VR support for Microsoft Flight Simulator will coincide with the HP Reverb G2 this fall. VR support will be available on all Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) headsets upon VR launch. Support for additional platforms/headsets will follow.
I can't wait until full VR support is there. I got FS2020, tried it, but it's really not the same without VR so it's back to X-Plane for me, for now.
I have a similar issue. I live In Lithuania (it's in EU close to Russia).. When I noticed 4-8 mbps DL speeds on 100 mbps link... I tried VPNing to some other country. And, surprisingly, it helped. Now in cases like this I usually connect to some Ireland VPN server (I use NordVPN) and my download speeds improve drastically. Up to 10x...
Try it, or, if you are in US maybe try VPN to some other location in the country, presumably "closer" to MS/Asobo servers.. I don't know how MSFS algorithms decide which location to download from, but I hope that little workaround will help you get decent download speed..
It's playable on an X Box controller, but it's a bit twitchy unless you turn the sensitivity down. You're probably not getting any recommendations because there are just so many to choose from.
You can probably pick up the cheapest joystick you can find and be able to control the planes just fine, or spend an absolute fortune on replica flight controls, rudder pedals, switch panels and all sorts.
If this is your first sim, you don't know if you're going to play it much and you don't want to spend a lot then you could go for something like this Thrustmaster stick.
