As others have said, no SMS fallback. Your best alternative would probably be INVI messages. But as with every chat app you would need to have people install INVI to have that non sms communication which tends to be a lot of work. I have not used INVI. My friends actually chose Allo over other messaging apps.
So, not exactly the same, but you can create your own gifs with Gboard.
They just updated the logo in the playstore!
So I backed up my chats, uninstalled the app, then installed the previous version (24.0.020) and now the AAC decoder warning message no longer appears. This version also doesn't have the transcript feature, so it's gotta be a bug with that. Tomorrow I'll be able to see if the battery consumption improves at all. I'm sure it will if the app no longer holds basically a permanent wakelock hahah
I was having the same infuriating problem. I fixed it by uninstalling Allo and installing the previous version off APK Mirror.
Here's a link to Google Allo variants page on apkmirror if anyone else wants to do the same. You'll just wanna make sure you download the correct variant for your device's processor and display density.
I did loose the last 16hrs or so of conversations because Allo's conversation backup is still pretty spotty but I prefer that to however long it takes for Google to fix the smart smiley issue.
I thought when Google dropped support for SMS in hangouts that they were going to bring it to allo, but sadly not. Instead, dev time has gone to android messages.
I'm sure there's either a technical or business decision that's stopping them from introducing SMS support, but sadly, we on the outside are left in the dark as to what it is.
Have you tried messenger lite?

I have it on my phone since I don't have the Facebook app and I never check it on the desktop.
