It could be the VPN you tried. Free ones don’t work. Some are detected. There’s whole websites dedicated to which ones get through and work on Netflix and which ones don’t.

The ones that I use that works on HBO Max is called IPVanish. If it worked on HBO Max Mexico, I’d be very surprised if it didn’t work on HBO Max USA.
