I have never been a daily drinker (3-4 times a week at most). However, I know two guys who does drink kava daily and the only issue for them is kanikani.
One of them has a white collar job and takes care of his skin with coconut oil and moisturizers. It's still obvious if you're standing close to him and taking a good look, but otherwise not bad enough to be embarrassing. The other guy is a farmer and doesn't really care. He could be mistaken for an Ent from LOTR... it looks terrible.
Drink lots of water to stay hydrated, moisturize multiple times a day, take a break from kava at least two days a week if you can (or just have less of it daily).
The vendors listed in the links on the sidebar are probably the most trustworthy that you could find. They do various degrees of testing (visit each vendor for details) and they appreciate the importance of a safe, reliable product. I'm pretty careful myself, and I feel comfortable with these folks.
I think the most satisfactory results come from the traditional prep method - you'll need some medium grind kava (not micronized or instant) and a squeeze bag, which is sometimes included for free, or else buy a 75 micron bag on amazon, like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071CDZPJW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
There are full instructions on the sidebar. Once you have it down pat it's not difficult at all.
I'm not certain but I'm pretty sure it's not practical to grow your own kava. It would kind of be like growing your own coffee, it's possible, but not anything you'd really want to tackle.
Looks very similar to this The problem with 90% of extracts currently available - especially powdered ones - are they're being mass produced in China. An acetone test probably won't reveal any color change because most of them are being produced with acetone (very bad!) so the color the powder is, is the color the test produces - (again very bad that it is not bright yellow). The problem with acetone extraction - unlike water, acetone pulls every nasty thing out of the kava that you normally wouldn't drink by traditional preparation. This is why the test is so reliable. By using Tudei kava (which they almost always do) the extraction is concentrating the FKB compounds among other chemicals that make Tudei inherently bad.
If you're looking for something quick and easy, go with instant greens which are dehydrated traditionally prepared kava juice or possibly micronized kavas. If you're dead set on powerful extracts, at least go with a tincture that can be confirmed based with Noble kava or CO2 that has used Noble kava.
Your local hardware store should sell paint strainers that will do the job.
They look like this: https://www.amazon.com/Strainer-Filters-Elastic-Hydroponic-Gardening/dp/B083LVYSJS/
The common recommendation around here is to avoid extracts, and just use regular Kava root powder from a good source.
I got Kavafied KAVA SUPREME on Amazon a few weeks ago as my first Kava and it worked quite well for me.
General knowledge around here is to avoid extracts/pills etc, and stick with either regular ground root or micronized/instant Kava, and stick with vendors that have a good reputation.
If you just want to buy something that doesn't need extra preparation or extra knowledge, you can just get this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Micronized-Instant-Kava-Powder-Vanuatu/dp/B0165A0SOG/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1516143844&sr=8-1&keywords=micronized%2Bkava&th=1 . That's a well regarded brand around here, and you can just mix it with water/soy milk/whatever and drink it.
You can also just get regular ground root and a strainer (I like this one), and prepare it using the kneading or blending methods. It's not hard but, especially with the kneading method, results may vary.
While costing slightly more per oz, Dua Na Bilo is a much better product.
Wakacon is regarded as quality, but weak in potency. Dua Na Bilo is constantly reviewed as one of the strongest kava's available at any price. If you'd like to read more about it, there are certainly posts here if you search and there's a lot on www.kavaforums.com
It's actually sold out very often so I was surprised Amazon even had any in stock right now. There is a limited supply because it all comes from one farm.
I would suggest a 75 micron strainer bag from Amazon such as: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071CDZPJW?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
It is nylon and the material is very sturdy and to exact specifications. The only issue I had with it is the stitching started to come a little unraveled at the corners which was easily rectified with a little reinforcement hand stitching. I suppose this happens because of the rough handling of the bag through the kneading process. Although, besides the stitching the nylon is not going to overly stretch or tear itself.
Good luck.
I also just purchased and recieved a pack of 1 gallon "bubble bags". They are used to extract the essence from herbs and root powder. They are stacked 5 thick and go from 73microns to 200microns. I am looking to experiment with filtering a batch of micronized that I have that gives me bad GI issues. It seems my body does not like the root material at all. It is better with the knead method but it still persists although slightly in comparison. Basically, I am trying to salvage my micronized while seeing if I can produce a more thoughouly refined grog while maintaining the potency.
Hi there, welcome to /r/kava.
There is a FAQ in the sidebar that I highly recommend that you read.
>It’s like making tea?
No. There are instructions in the FAQ.
>Can someone point me to something specific?
There's a list of recommended vendors in the sidebar. Pick one of the top vendors at random. Buy the first kava you see on their website that isn't labelled "micronised". What you want is traditional grind (aka medium grind) kava powder.
Buy a strainer bag. If the vendor you're buying from has one, buy it. Otherwise, buy one on Amazon. This is the first non-sponsored result I got in my search for an 80 micron nut milk bag: https://www.amazon.com/Pack-Multiple-Reusable-Strainer-Cheesecloth/dp/B01N2Q4O08/
Knead the kava well (watch a couple of youtube videos on it if you're not sure how... search "making kava") and then be sure to drink it on an empty stomach.
Good luck!
If you want a kickass straining bag, get the 75 micron bag at: Amazon Link
I use it to strain 5-6 gallons a day for business, and it handles a tremendous amount of stress
I have tried it ~12 times over the last month or so and I feel like I may finally be starting to overcome the reverse tolerance. The effects are very mild for me now where they were practically nonexistent at first. So many people report nice strong effects from kava I guess I am just an unlucky one with a big reverse tolerance!
At first I found the taste to be near unbearable but I have found a great solution. Orange flavored water enhancer almost completely masks the disgusting flavor for me.
Consider trying Taki Mai Shots and Kalm With Kava concentrate.
The best quality micronised (makas removed from fresh/green root) is made by Gourmet Hawaiian Kava.
Look them up in the Merik index. I had all that info back in the 90's but it's stored somewhere in a file cabinet.
I'm pretty sure that they were all listed in the chemical index of J. Ott's Pharmacotheon.
Basically, solubility in oil more so, than water.
Some are strictly oil soluble (the more volatile oils especially) whereas others are combine well with water.
Working off of memory, it's possible get get a lot out of the plants but a word of warning regarding whole plant extractions and the hepatotoxic molecules in the arial parts of the plant... a few died from liver failure due to such "complete extractions".
I've met people that have tried to market sprays and other extracts over the years... the major limitation is the inherent fragility of the molecules themselves (shelf life)
There's no way around needing a strainer. If you don't have a kava strainer bag, use a doubled-up pantyhose.
Perhaps use the blender method instead of hand-kneading it (use the search bar at the top of reddit or google the blender method). Then, once blended, pour it into a bowl through the pantyhose and give it a squeeze.
If you can't find pantyhose in Italy, use a very thing t-shirt.
If you have time to wait for it to arrive, buy this: https://www.amazon.it/Therpin-Sacchetto-alimenti-75-micron-mandorle/dp/B072QZL53W/
Get some off of Amazon when your order kava and mix a little in with the kava. Guaranteed to make your kava potent. Its just a supplement that helps kava absorbed into your body and makes it easy for kavalactones to pass the blood brain barrier.
I've gotten most of those Kava's from Amazon you mentioned and lecithin has really made a difference. I swear by this one:
My pro tip:
Buy Stone Kava, blend 3/4 cup powder with 24oz water for four minutes, strain through a straining bag, consume 4-6oz at a time over the course of the evening (start on an empty stomach, then eat something greasy/fatty like pizza).
Krunk.
It will be dirt and iron filings from the pounding machine. You can get rid of this with a proper straining bag or a clean kava. Do yourself a favour and grab a bag of this
This is the blender that OP is talking about: https://www.amazon.com/Ninja-Personal-Extraction-Smoothies-BL456/dp/B00Y2U1QUM
>also is "wash" just contact of hot water with the kava powder?
Kneading kava in water, or blending it. Yes, some people use "wash" to refer to that. Traditionally, only room temperature water is used, but you can use warm water for slightly better extraction.
Haha sounds like me about 3 months ago 😅 this totally worked for me. I wouldn't use the ALU ball though as you definitely won't get bang for your buck using an ALU ball. I just found out that these guys include a strainer bag free of charge inside the bag of kava. https://www.amazon.com/Royal-Fiji-Kava-Kava-Kava-Organic/dp/B09VWFJLBF/ref=mp_s_a_1_80?crid=1RECFP7VO6DLY&keywords=kava&qid=1652574222&sprefix=kava+%2Caps%2C291&sr=8-80
Without a doubt this stuff if you're in the USA 🇺🇸 https://www.amazon.com/Royal-Fiji-Kava-Kava-Kava-Organic/dp/B09VWFJLBF/ref=mp_s_a_1_80?crid=1RECFP7VO6DLY&keywords=kava&qid=1652574222&sprefix=kava+%2Caps%2C291&sr=8-80
No need to cold brew the kava root just mix and drink 😃. If you're in the USA I would recommend these guys from Fiji: https://www.amazon.com/Royal-Fiji-Kava-Kava-Kava-Organic/dp/B09VWFJLBF/ref=mp_s_a_1_80?crid=1RECFP7VO6DLY&keywords=kava&qid=1652574222&sprefix=kava+%2Caps%2C291&sr=8-80 Start small with 2tbspns/18oz of water. Let us know how it works for you 👍
Can't see the prices because my stupid browser won't let me change the location to a US zip code as I'm in Australia but both brands a well known go with the cheaper option. I'm biased and always support Fiji products because that's where I'm from originally. Have also tried and tested this stuff from Royal Fiji last I could see was about 48.95 for 1lb. You will need a strainer bag though 👇https://www.amazon.com/Royal-Fiji-Kava-Kava-Kava-Organic/dp/B09VWFJLBF/ref=mp_s_a_1_80?crid=1RECFP7VO6DLY&keywords=kava&qid=1652574222&sprefix=kava+%2Caps%2C291&sr=8-80

Probably more likely to find this at a brewing supply store, or online.
You'd definitely have to play around with the time and concentrations to see what works or doesn't work.
In my experience most cheese cloths have holes too large and let lots of vegetable matter through, which can be upsetting to the stomach.
Grab 75 micron or smaller re-usable nut milk bags instead, like these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071CDZPJW
Or if you're in a rush, nylon pantyhose.
Repost of an old post of mine.
Ok. Do what I do. I have an Aluball and shaker and I've used it zero times in about a year and a half.
That's all I do. It's faster than Aluball. I've gotten 3 washes off an Aluball. It's possible to overfill an Aluball. You can't overfill the full-mesh ball. But it is a sphere, so it can be hard to close if you get it over 2/3 full.
The ball stays close with aggressive shaking.
I got my nut milk sack on Amazon, 80 micron works great in my experience.
Probably originally from Alibaba. Here's one: http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Super-Critical-Extracted-Kava-Extract-70_1349257986.html?spm=a2700.7724838.0.0.CJxTZB
If it makes you ill, don't tell people that kava made you sick.
AFAIK it will happen every time you use those brands. They're poorly made.
Why not just buy one and test it if you're really worried? Is it this one? https://www.amazon.com/Premier-Biotech-Bio-Cup-Opioids-Other/dp/B09CX9XHRP/
So micronized isn’t instant? I’m New to this. Curious about trying Kava and was gonna order this as a jumping off point, until I saw the prices on Lamikava’s site. Much much cheaper.
Also… do you get the shipping insurance? Have you ever had an issue with shipping?

That mixer should take care of any clumps you can throw at it.
It's the upgraded version of the mixer I suggested here:
I just checked the product page, and it doesn't say. But it's very clear that it's supposed to provide "chill". Here's the link, I don't think it's against the rules to post it here. (:
Add coconut milk or coffee creamer to help the taste. Certainly ways to mask it. I used to use coconut cream . This stuff if mainly sugar though. Put enough of this in there and should be fine :)

I mentioned a couple kinds of kava in my original post, the "new" variety is Mo'i from Gourmet Hawaiian Kava. ~40g kava, I do a couple washes typically with around 2 cups of water each.
The bag is relatively new, it's this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZJBG7F9/ref=pe_1098610_137716200_cm_rv_eml_rv0_dp
apparently 200 micron. I do love O'Keefe's as well, but this is not the dry skin thing, this is blotchy red flush almost that is also super itchy. Happens about 12 hours after drinking.
My favorite way to make kava is 4 cups of coconut milk, anywhere from 1/2 - 1 cups of kava. Mixed in a blender. Let sit for 10 minutes. Add 2 tbsp of cacao powder and a spoon full of sugar or Stevia. Mix again in blender. Then I pour that through the strainer for this tea cup: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08FBDSZQF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have to stir it with a spoon to get through the strainer and then mash the kava down to strain out as much liquid as possible.
I have an Aluball and I stopped using it in favor of another similar method.
The Aluball is convenient but i find it takes a fairly long time to extract.
I bought a large tea ball strainer like This one, shake it up in hot water for like 20-30 seconds and pour it through a fine mesh tea infuser (I bought this and it's worked great for almost a year so far) into a cup or bottle and chug.
It's faster, stronger (I did 3ish washes thru an Aluball for 40-60 seconds. Now I do 2 washes for 20-30 seconds and there's very little left after that.), you don't have to screw and unscrew the Aluball. I feel like I can fit more powder in because I didn't want to have to buy a second Aluball like I know some do.
You can use the infuser for tea if you wash it out decently.
That's my contribution.
“Wakacon Kava Strainer Bag Pro” on Amazon.
I don’t use Kava anymore, but the strainer is huge and works great.
It's crazy.. But I love kisa kava. Ive ordered all the top notch and felt nothing. I thought it was reverse tolerance. I ordered this and 2 teaspoons... I feel it. Everytime. Probably something too it??? Bit ive been using for 5+ months happily. Its a bit "groggy or rooty" so i do put it in a blender with warm waterkisas kava
She's beautiful!
I sprayed cotton facial pads with the soap and wiped the leaves down as gently as I could. Start from your highest leaves on the plant and work down. I used a sprayed q tip for the leaf base and axil. I did this 3 times in 9 days. After wiping the leaves, step two was removing the top layer of soil for any mites that might have fallen. I Remove the top 1/4 inch soil. Then spray the exposed soil with soap morning and evening for 4 days. On the 4th day, replace top 1/4" inch with 1/2" soil, then spray with soap. I scope the plant every few days with a 30X, I've been free for about 2 weeks.
Sure here's a link to my favorite one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A80163M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
In my opinion, it's great for chilling and doing random things around the house, or even video games. Just look up the traditional way to prepare it. It's not a ready-made drink like the Kalm drink you bought; it's root powder that you have to prepare with water and a strainer bag.
I had the same experience with that Kalm drink you bought. Makes you feel excellent at first, then terrible, and they're so expensive it's just not worth the money.
They sell it on Amazon but never make enough so it always goes out of stock. I think you have to subscribe to their newsletter to be notified when new stock is available. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DXF7QHF/
This bag? Amazon. Here be the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0784SSKNM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Update: I have since ordered another bag of the cocoa flavor in 8oz size. I know that kona is generally not recommended and that people respond differently to different vendors, I just wanted to share my experience. The cocoa flavor is not bad, I wouldn't say that it makes it taste better but it definitely doesn't make it taste worse. The problem with kona is that they don't really provide a "strain" but I can say that overall this is a pretty balanced Kava--very relaxing but not too "heady". As compared to my KWK Loa Waka that I have tried, the feeling of this is much more pleasurable. KWK Loa left me pretty sick feeling and in a weird sort of emotionless mood. I found it very hard to keep down. Just wanted to share this with anyone who has seen kona on Amazon but has been unsure about purchasing. I would reccommend as a good beginner kava. I am transitioning to medium grind now and just placed an order with Cactus, so I'll see how it compares.

I know people on this subreddit hate extracts, but I'm using Webber Naturals Kava Kava and it for sure has a noticeable affect on my anxiety. I'm in the same boat in needing something quick and convenient. Note: I'm not saying it's as strong as micronized (never tried), but I'm a very skeptical person and not prone to feeling placebo affects and this stuff definitely helps. However, I think it's a Canadian brand so I'm not sure how widely available it in the US.
https://www.amazon.com/Webber-Naturals-Stress-Vegetarian-Capsules/dp/B01N46M6OT
Sorry for the Amazon link, buy it somewhere else if you can.
No Aluball. Just a blender bottle and the spring whisk thing included. Shake it for a minute or 2 in warm to hot water and then pour through a strainer or tea infuser. Might need to press the infuser to squeeze out the goods.
Aluball is more convenient but less efficient and less potent. I used both and the blender bottle is my main method now.
Most Kava keeps me awake, I have learned I have to drink it as early as possible. Kavafied KAVA Supreme puts me to sleep though if I have enough of it. But usually in a sort of unpleasant "I need to close my eyes because they are way to crossed" sort of way. But I like it a lot!
Try using plastic wrap over the top of whatever bottle you are using. If you want something thicker, you can use something like these stretch to fit bowl covers. I like them more because they don't tear as easy. I turn the alluball bottle upside down and bounce it off the plastic instead of the bottom of the bottled.
I blender bottle and Tea infuser. Tap hot water.
Pour the mix through the infuser, then squeeze the juice out. You're left with an convenient, dense infuser-shaped chunk of makas. Those can get frozen (in our 100°F+, 38°C+ heat now, they just dry out) to be reused later for a second or third wash.
For the 3rd wash, I usually add some instant to boost it up to strength. Awa Moi is a top pick for that.
I use this. https://www.amazon.com/Yoassi-Extra-Fine-Approved-Stainless/dp/B01LQ7NQTW
I pour till full, then wait a bit. After a bit it stops draining then use my finger to swirl the kava in the bottom to keep it going. Then finally I press the dregs in the tea filter to squeeze all the drops I can, then rinse out the kava. Repeat until all your kava is processed. It takes about 5 minutes.
Hello! I just started taking kava about 6 weeks ago so my knowledge is limited. For me it kinda feels like an all natural valium/vicodin combo. It helps with my chronic pain and anxiety. I really, really enjoy it. I started, and have stuck with, just regular ground root (medium ground?). I purchased the kavafied nylon bag on amazon for the kneading part. I also like this kava. I've tried about 6 types from amazon and this is the cheapest that I've found and my 2nd. I think it's a good place to start. Hope this helps a little.
You can pick them up on Amazon;
From my experience they are not as strong as some good micronized root, but they do have a noticeable relaxing effect, and are worth having on-hand IMO. Best of luck!
Something like this https://www.amazon.com/Pinfox-Micron-Straining-Strainer-Brewing/dp/B071CDZPJW/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=nut+milk+bag+micron&qid=1556673098&s=gateway&sr=8-6
Or some people just use nylon pantyhose.
My go to Kava is Wakacon (black bag). I had few sessions with Mood and Mind (Here) but I don't think i'd pick it over the Wakacon.
Something like this would be good! Just search for coconut bowl, theres tons of options :D
I've seen references to a 75 micron bag being ideal, although I can't find anything definitive. I am under the impression that a 75 is more coarse than usual.
I've only ever used this one and it seems to be working fine:

is this a good brand sandollars>https://www.amazon.com/Yogi-Stress-Relief-Count-Packaging/dp/B0009F3QKW? will this help me? thank you for your kind reply and your feedback happy new years to you.
Also meant to say yesterday ( Was so tired - still am sorry) I've had 2 years of bs psychiatry and something that helped a lot for the last 7 years called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - this has helped me most in the longterm when I'm sober, because it puts you back in control without meds.
I'd be way worse off without the tricks I know. I was fortunate enough to see someone highly trained who studied under Victor Frankl (Author of "Man's Search for Meaning" - Holocaust survivor...) at USC and to this day I swear by it, but the thought training is a way of life. You have to practice it. Retrain the mind. Anything is possible. The brain just loves reverting to old patterns, so it's hard at first. You have to do the work though and believe in it.
When we take drugs, no one tries to make themselves better so the problem just continues to worsen and then when people stop it takes a lot of re-training. I think a lot of people "wait to feel better". Good luck with that.
He wouldn't prescribe meds, but in this case it was appropriate because the therapist's head wasn't up his ass.
Similar to other commenters, I used to try straining with something like that after brewing and not only was it a huge pain in the ass but I'd still end up with a lot of sediment in my brew and it would mess with my stomach. Recently grabbed a strainer bag off Amazon called Klean Brew (here) that has been working super well. Way better than the kind of stuff i used to use like what you're showing in your pic, and it allows for kneading/squeezing and therefore for proper brewing
I bought these bags on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06X1FZYPW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I put around 3 heaping Teaspoons in the bag. Than put in around 4 cups of hot but not boiling water into my Coffee Carafe. I message the bag than leave for 1/2 hour. Than I knead the bag messaging it for around 5 minutes. I also add a dab of Olive Oil.
The first time I took Kava is didn't do anything but the 2nd I felt an effect. It numbs my tongue which is a sign that I'm doing it right.
According to the literature don't use boiling water as it destroys the Alkaloids. Just leaving the powder in water won't extract the alakloids because the Kavalactones aren't water soluble. By massaging the powder in the bag, you are manually extracting them.
If you want to get fancy they sell Muslin Bags on Amazon. These were perfect for Kava Kava and Kratom tea. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06X1FZYPW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks for sharing your experience!
In terms of nausea, perhaps you need a finer filter to strain out all the makas. I use one with 25 micron mesh. I even filter my micronized kava, as well. I just don't want any of that indigestible cellulose in my drink. The hard fibers do not do well in my stomach.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007WA5D5I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Also, where are you sourcing your kava? I would suggest a different strain/variety, if you have not already tried.
I prefer medium grind. The classic traditional method of preparation that has been safely used for over 3,000 years has never let me down.
Keep us updated on your experiences!
I vouch for the loa waka, and hear cactus is great! I just got this weird one that's highly recommended too, haven't tried it yet tho https://www.amazon.com/Dua-Na-Bilo-Premium-Fijian/dp/B01MSS0ATH/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1489428624&sr=8-1&keywords=dua+na+bilo people said it's better than anything else!
Oh man I hope you didn't order yet then because I would highly recommend spending a bit more on some Dua Na Bilo
This is quite literally one of the strongest kava's out there, sells out all the time (it's only been for sale for about two months and has sold out 3 times already) and considering all of this the price is extremely good.
It seems like Wakacon is $38 a pound and this is about $46 and believe me it's worth paying extra for. I personally would even cancel the order for Wakacon if you already placed it ..
no, never had a problem. I always use a medium grind Kava though, maybe you are using a finder grind or your blender is more powerful than mine?
I use these types of strainer bags
The only label I can see online is this one: https://www.amazon.com/Kava-King-Vanuatu-Blend/dp/B00A7ANUKU This is supposed to be their unflavoured product, which I assumed is the "pure" one. As per label it contains fillers. I cannot remember if I've tried the lateral root one and I cannot find any pics of the list of ingredients online. In any it's no longer available, apparently.
Ok thanks. I had assumed that this wouldn't be as great as the real thing. It's a well known local store that sells it under their brand. I use kratom and steer people away from any kratom extracts as well.
With that said, could you suggest a good sampler from a vetted vendor? I saw the other post about Amazon and I see there is a Kalm with Kava product
However I think would rather get a sampler instead of a bunch of one first.
I have been told Bula Kava House and gourmet hawaiian kava are food vendors, anything you would recommend from those?
Finally should I stay away from micronized kava as well?
Thanks!
Amazon also sells Kava Waka. You get twice the amount for half the price, and the quality isn't too bad. It's not as good as Kalm, but it's worth it to save a few bucks.
I would suggest two products. The co2 extract is to keep under your lip (about the size of a pea for half an hour, I generally do this 2 to 3 times in an hour and half when I use this method). I carry it with me everywhere. The second product is to be mixed as a drink. For the second product, the instant kava, I typically mix it with almond milk, lecithin, and ice to help emulsify and activate the product. (Also a little chocolate or vanilla stevia for flavor.)
No. Cheese cloth will only remove the bigger twigs. The more makas you allow through, the harder it will be to swallow and keep down.
Buy a nut milk bag if you can't get a kava strainer: https://www.amazon.com/K7-0SHH-5IIE-Premium-Food-Grade-Almond/dp/B00158U8DU
I think the Aluball was causing the extreme nausea. I have a very sensitive stomach, and have nausea enough as it is (not diagnosed yet, so not sure why I have it all the time now).
I made Kava again from the Aluball, and then filtered it through a Kava strainer. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N1B3RKA What remained was a ton of mud. So I had apparently drank that before, which may have been bad. Drinking it after filtering made it taste much cleaner, and it gave me no additional nausea.
Today, I made about 48oz of Kava from 3 tablespoons of Loa Waka. This time I did it the "good" way. Kneaded it by hand for about 5 minutes. Excited to see the results of this. The liquid is much, much more chocolaty-looking than what the Aluball makes. I even strained it twice, just to be sure nothing got through.
So grab some of this and then do the squeezing and kneading in then Clamato? I've been drinking kava for a long time and always accepted the taste, but not that I've had their juice - I don't want to go back :). thanks for the recommendation.

> If you ever get a chance to look at the book "Buevers du Kava" (drinkers of kava) definitely flip through it (even if you don't read French
It's a bit pricey for a book I can't read so I'm really hoping they put out an English version at some point.
Those teas are good but hardly a true kava experience (I still drink the yogi tea daily).
I would suggest a kava powder.
I've gotten people into kava with this started kit:
A few recommendations:
1) Double strain, i.e., put your prepared kava through another strainer bag (doubled up if need be)
2) Get a finer filter bag, such as a 10 Micron Size bag
3) Chase your kava with lots of ginger tea. Throw 3-4oz of coarsely chopped fresh ginger in a pot with 3 cups water and simmer for 20 minutes. Add honey and drink during your kava session.
4) Take some high quality probiotics. This will help break down the resistant starch in the Kava which is likely the major culprit.
5) Get a strain that is low in both DHK (Chemotype Number: 2) and DHM (Chemotype Number: 5), such as Mo'i from Gourmet Hawaiin Kava. These two constituents tend to be more correlated with nausea. See more about Chemotypes here.
Traditional prep. Large batches are pretty inconvenient to make with a blender (unless you have some crazy industrial-sized blender), but you can easily make gallons of kava with powder and a simple strainer. I also find it very tedious to strain out the small particles after blending, and it's easy to accidentally end up with some "sawdust floaties" if you aren't super careful.
Lots of people have said good things about this nut milk bag, so I'll report back when I (hopefully) receive mine in the mail tomorrow. Any unused kava can stay in the fridge for a day, since a couple hours won't do much to your kava, but multiple days of storage reduces potency.
Yes, I use the standard root powder. Last night when I wrote this, I was extremely krunk from my 8tbsp/3 cup water brew using this nut milk bag as my strainer bag. I believe I used the Waka kava from Bula Kava House, which is very heady indeed.
That's the source.
After waiting about 30 more minutes and taking one more tablespoon, along with a kava candy I'm really feeling it.
I think I did everything correctly, except I didn't strain it, just straight up drank the sludge at the bottom of the cup. It was pretty nasty, I plan on finding something to strain it with for next time.
I have to say this stuff is good. I'd say it looks a lot like chocolate milk, only maybe a little bit lighter colored. I think it's working great, but it is my first time so I have nothing to compare.
I use the same method as you. Other techniques may extract a bit more from the Kava but in my opinion are not really worth the additional time. I.e. doing a 30 minute soak prior to dumping into a strainer bag might yield something like a 5% increase in strength. The downside is the process takes 30 minutes longer. Kneading for 5 minutes is really going to extract almost everything there is in the Kava. I'd rather just use a bit more Kava to get a stronger cup then have some overly elaborate, time consuming process to make it.
As far as what brand I currently like this stuff:
Probably not the best out there but it's definitely quality Kava at a great price. Plus if you have an Amazon Prime account you get free 2 day shipping.
