Idk which one of these you would super enjoy but here is a list of all of the EP's i've heard this year. They are ranked from most enjoyable to least. LINK
A much nicer way to organise this would just be to make a rateyourmusic account, rate those albums, and then link your profile in the daily discussion threads! That way you could add some of us as friends and it'd be much nicer to read through. Here's a link to mine so you can see what it's like
Edit: are these all from this year? You could also make a list of albums you've listened to from this year, like I have on my profile!
ok so i solidified my top 50 of the first half of 2017. <strong>lmk whatchu think.</strong>
i think it's been a pretty decent year so far. a lot of releases that i enjoyed, but didn't blow me away like some of the top rate drops of last year.
part of me really wants to go through RYM's worst of all time list but part of me doesn't hate myself THAT much
I only started to pay attention to 2016 releases in December, and it turns out that that's not enough time to really make a fully informed decision on all the music of a particular year. I've managed to listen to something like 80 albums, but this is gonna spill well into January and maybe February. I've just made a rym list to keep track of it properly if anyone wants to have a look. It's the first year I really paid attention to releases from that year, and I'm really glad I did it. I think I might go back and retroactively do 2015 in a few months. Anyways, I'm gonna do 2017 right and actually keep up with releases as they come out. I'm already enjoying it!
Edit: What's up with the font on this subreddit? Is anyone able to tell that I have a hypertext link in there? If not, here's the list: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/mynameiscian/2016-albums
Edit 2: Awesome mods fixed it awesomely
I just added two albums to my 5/5 perfect album club on RYM (which you can read about here).
So I feel like it's a good time to share my full list of all my 5/5 albums. Feel free to post your lists below, excited to see what kind of albums you guys consider ~~"perfect"~~ 5/5 material.
So I've been occasionally posting my thoughts on the /mu/core chart - and I finally finished it! Just worked my way through the rest of the metal section this past week.
In celebration, I put together a RYM list of my own personal rankings of the chart. I think it gives a general idea of my personal tastes and I think it was a fun process. Let me know what you think!
Trigger warning (I'm gonna get this out of the way) - I really do not like Lift Your Skinny Fists, which seems to be the most controversial opinion on the list.
In case anyone's interested, I recently updated my list of favorite jazz albums. Nothing super obscure on here but I figure someone might find a new favorite thanks to this list.
Any thoughts/comments/suggestions? Anyone else put together a list like this? Or what would your list look like if you had one?
Last.fm says i've scrobbled DAMN. 190 times so far. Who can beat me?
the rest have been mostly listens to the stuff on my classics list, which you can read about here.
i didn't listen to any new releases from last week besides DAMN. AMA about any of the rest.
Here are all my 5/5 ratings on RYM
If I had to pick 5, it would be as such
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
Radiohead - Kid A
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Probably a Bowie album or a Beatles album. There are like 6 albums between the two of them that I would consider for this spot (Revolver, Sgt Peppers, Abbey Road, Ziggy, Low, Heroes)
So lately I've been (slowly) going through some of the post-punk classics. Entertainment by Gang of Four, Y by The Pop Group, The Modern Dance, stuff like that.
I really need to dig deeper into the genre. Anybody have some recs? Here's a list of every post-punk album I've rated on RYM for reference.
Bonus points if they are psychedelic, or they mix genres really well.
I don't really have a favorite EP of all time, but I have a handful I consider amazing and essential to hear if you are a fan of the artist.
Burial- Kindred EP
Young Fathers- Tape One & Tape Two
Vince Staples- Hell Can Wait
Summer Salt- Driving To Hawaii
Godspeed- Slow Riot...
Jon Hopkins- Asleep Versions
Milo- Things That Happen At Day
The National- Cherry Tree
Neutral Milk Hotel- Ferris Wheel On Fire
Isaiah Rashad- Cilvia Demo
Edit: Fleet Foxes- Sun Giant
Also, i've only listened to a few, but here is my rankings of EP's/Mixtapes from this year LINK
My top 30 albums mid-way through the year can be found <strong>here</strong>! Please feel free to roast me or leave some rec's.
Honorable Mentions:
Kweku Collins- Grey
Future Islands- The Far Field
Blanck Mass- World Eater
Feist- Pleasure
posted this too late in yesterday's DMD and didn't get a response, so here it is 1 mo time fo yo mind.
was bored and ranked my top 90 hip hop albums of the 10s. only genre restriction was that it couldn't be instrumental.
anyway, roast me.
Please recommend me an album, any album!
This will be the form where I will take albums to listen to and write about in the DMD forums. Be sure to leave your reddit username as well so I can credit you!
Also; so you have a feel of what to reccomend me, here is my RateYourMusic profile.
I got bored and decided to make a list of all the albums I heard for the first time this year.
Feel free to judge me for not having listened to any of these earlier
I was bored so I made a list of my top 50 Ambient albums. I definitely need to relisten some of them, but it's a work in progress. Recommendations are appreciated.
Just recently got back into RYM. My username is Jterp21.
Check out my ratings and yell at me how my music taste is not patrician enough, or just add me as a friend if ya want.
Jterp's Best To Worst: Neil Young Edition
Also, if you are interested in exploring more Neil, I have a RYM list with short descriptions of each album that can help guide you through his work. You can find that RYM list HERE
I'm going to make a quick list of my worst hit songs, just whatever comes into my head first
I'm just now realizing how much people don't like Shape of You. I thought it was kinda well received until now. I like it. The lyrics are kinda...Ed Sheerany, but it's so catchy that I can ignore that.
My top 5 (not including compilations and live albums):
Full list of 5 star albums:
My top 5
NoMeansNo - Wrong
Arvo Pärt - Tabula Rasa (ECM)
Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
Comus - First Utterance
Magma - K.A
I've got but one 5/5 (Nicolas Jaar's Space is Only Noise). A few choice 4.5 picks would be Actress' Ghettoville, Earl Sweatshirt's Solace, The Necks' Aether, and Boards of Canada's Music Has the Right to Children. Hit me up on RYM! I love to see what other folks think on records.
My 5/5 ones are maybe a bit plebish.
I'd pick:
1. Fishmans - Long Season
2. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
3. AJJ - People Who Can Eat People...
4. Radiohead - In Rainbows
5. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Just listened to an awesome 2018 album today, II by the Sunwatchers. Just look at the RYM genre tags for the album to get an idea of what to expect.
Crazy psychedelic fusion of rock, noise and free jazz. The interplay between sax and guitar happens throughout the album and creates some amazing textures, melodies and harmonies. It shot into my top 10 for the year after first listen. Fans of that Lonker See album from this year would probably like this one (though I like this one more). /u/jterp21 check this out.
EDIT: I know some people hate this kind of comparison when it comes to music, but I'm gonna do it anyway. It sounds like Albert Ayler, Avec le Soleil (from the Pas Pire Pop album last year) and Boredoms all got together and jammed. That's the vibes I get from this (just did my second listen).
Lots of Japanese albums, lots of Young Thug and Ski Mask the Slump God.
LOVED the new Beach House. DID NOT LIKE the new arctic monkeys - opening track is a hit though.
Don't have much time for a write up beyond that - but feel free to see my Japanese album ratings >>> <strong>HERE</strong>
The middle part of Long Season gets better on repeated listens imo. That may be because you are expecting the amazing ending, but I'm not sure.
Also be sure to check out the live version from this one, it's amazing.
I’ve been working on putting together a jazz list for 2017. Here’s what I’ve really liked so far, in a general order of how much I liked em. Are their any big albums I’m missing? Have any suggestions?
The two big albums I’ve yet to get around to The Attic and Zimpel / Ziolek so I’ve at least got those on my radar.
While it isn't exactly the same as your list (I only started listening to music about 2 years ago, so it's a far smaller time frame), I made a similar list on rym a while ago.
Just reposting my post about albums, I would still like some more!
Please recommend me an album, any album!

Big changes for My highlights of 2017 so far
Rec me some new shit, roast me, rec me some new chunes, or AMA! :D
Aside from Fela, here's some great ones:
Batsumi - s/t
Francis Bebey - La Condition Masculine
The Pyramids - King of Kings / We Be All African
Solomon Ilori - African Hi Life
V/A - African Scream Contest
Some great stuff on there - Bowie, Kanye, Godspeed, etc.
I think it's a great idea to keep one of these. That way you can track your progress and see how far you've come in the span of a year! I actually took the time to put one together too. Pretty fun experience imo, even if RYM's list function can be annoying
So I'm slowly but surely catching up on 2017 releases. I'm probably still way behind some of the people on the sub who follow modern music closely but I'm getting there! Since I finally got around to a few bigger albums, I updated my 2017 List. If it goes as I'm expecting, that Max Richter might snag the top spot because it keeps growing on me.
Any thoughts?
I've only heard 9 of these - joke's on you amiright? /s
Um well here's my list in case anyone is interested. Literally all the 2017 projects I've heard
Updated my ranking for 2017 movies Please critique my tastes and recommend movies I've missed! I still need to watch A Cure for Wellness, A United Kingdom, and maybe Ghost in the Shell.
Made a top 20 for 2017 so far, check it out if you wanna. Go on, criticize my basic taste and if there's something I'm missing, let me know and I'll give it a listen!
edit: forgot RTJ3, I put it behind Julie Byrne and ahead of Syd
For those that want to dig deeper, RYM user yerblues has an incredibly extensive list spanning almost three decades.
This is also a pretty solid NY Times article on the subject.
Since I just got ~into~ music like a year and a half ago I'm working through a big list while I'm at work. Right now I'm focused on classics, so finishing the Doors discography, Bob Dylan's main discography, and then giving the Stooges a shot
If you wanna rec me anything else here's my rym
No idea how I found this album (I think digging through random RYM lists) but I've become enamored with this random southeast Asian album that has been sitting in my wishlist for awhile.
It's super lofi, with crackly guitars and vocals, but oh my lord the melodies are just absolutely beautiful on this, the vocals are perfect, and awesome guitars just swirling under the vocals, in a beatuiful mixture of lofi psychedelia.
What are some of your favorite albums that make you think "How in the hell did I find this and what are the chances?"
I'll go for an underappreciated album
Sly & Robbie Meet Nils Petter Molvær feat. Eivind Aarset and Vladislav Delay - Nordub. Recently found it, but it's become one of my favorites of the year.
On the extremely unlikely chance that this album somehow gets taken, I'll write on one of the Hampshire and Foat albums from this year (either one).
I’d say the new Julia Holter is imperative to listen to before the year’s end. Other than that i don’t really have an album that fit’s my “style” as I don’t really notice a pattern among my favorite albums of the year. But if any of the albums from my 2018 highlights then go for it!
My five star collection is a random bunch of albums I love but beyond that I don’t take it too seriously. According to RYM my newest addition is Toots and the Maytals’ Sweet and Dandy.
I'm slow to rate things I've had for a long time, so my higher ratings are spare; as it stands, I only have one five-star on RYM (Nicolas Jaar's Space is Only Noise). But the line between my 4.5s (here) and my 5.0s is pretty thin, with the exception of the Avalanches record - I'll probably drop that one soon.
As a few other people here have indicated, I'm not that interested in the idea of a "perfect" record - a lot of my 4.5s I initially found off-putting or disquieting, and not in a good way. But they've grown on me and wormed their way into my life, quietly but persistently and indelibly. I think that's perfect enough.
If you want some real corny but fun stuff, Zen Meditation is a smooth little listen. Steve Roach’s Structures of Silence and Eno’s Apollo are also A+ ambient albums.
Namaste!
I’m almost to 4,000 ratings on my RYM. It’s a dumb little milestone for someone who keeps track of past listens a little too much. So what should I listen to for #4,000? Any big name albums you noticed I’ve missed along the way?
For now I am thinking of Mountain Goats - Tallahassee but I am open for suggestions!
Hi everyone. Thanks for being such a helpful resource yesterday with my search for quality Japanese albums.
I've compiled all of the releases that interested me as well as some of my favorites that I've already heard.
Cheers!
I made a list of my favorites a while back actually! It needs some updating but I think it has a decent spread of styles. What’re you looking for in particular by the way?
Whoops, I realized I read this wrong
So far here’s what I’ve gotten to. Mostly Buarque (my intro), Jorge Ben and Veloso. I’m always looking for more of this stuff tho, I’d be down for some recs... I’ll check out that post either way.
I was waiting for your thoughts! :P What a way to kickstart a dive into these genres! Btw i can't remember if I told you already but Regal Worm is dropping an album early in 2018, so be excited for that!
Also, I really think you would dig these albums Heady Mental and Incitare. They also has a very quirky vibe, and there are some jaw-dropping moments to be had.
What do you guys think about blues? I've been trying to get more into older/traditional stuff (less blues-rock but that's cool too) from the movement thanks to guys like John Fahey, who manage to bring in the influences in fascinating ways. I'm still slowly working my way through this RYM list which does a great job breaking down the different styles imo.
Anyone have any other suggestions to help me along the way?
Hello all! Here is just an update on some of the albums I have listened to recently from my reccomendation list! Please feel free to add more albums that I could possibly enjoy!
Also, please try to take a look at my RateYourMusic.com to get a feel for what you should reccomend me!!
Efterklang – Tripper [Reddit – Bal_u]
Being the xx if the xx had access to a Roland scatter effect, the gimmick turns sour and unpleasant relatively quick.
Gucci Mane – Hard to Kill - [Discord/Reddit - Woolite]
A bombastic Zaytoven railed project that remains varied and arguably refreshing for a 60+ minute 2000's hip-hop album.
Dinosaur Jr – You're Living All Over Me - [Discord/Reddit - Woolite]
After the first listen, the main differences between this and a standard 90's indie rock album are the jarring noisescapes and drawn out Built to Spill-esque guitar sequences.
New Listens rated:
Ziggycore™
The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2 (not a new listen, but BUMPED to z-core)

Pretty Pretty Bad/Not For Me
Turrible

Die
Ah of course they're Scottish, my bad.
If you want some non-Anglophone recs, maybe give these a try:
Leo Ferré (reminds me of Leonard Cohen)
Lenny Valentino (Dream Pop)
This is Russian theatrical Twee pop and it's wonderful.
What's your backlog looking like right now? I have about 40 or so albums right now, of various genres that I'm pretty excited to try.
It seems like my backlog is perpetually in the 35-45 range. Everytime I work through it and delete some, I find a bunch of cool new music I want to try.
I listened to the Kinks greatest hits last week (after not listening to it for 3 years or so), and it was really cool to see their progression from the simple love songs to the more complex and nuanced later stuff. There's a stretch from track 11 to 17 with just one classic after another.
I understand that You Really Got Me was hugely influential for Hard Rock, and it's a good tune, but it pales in comparison to the later stuff.
What's your favourite song by The Kinks? For me, it's probably a threeway tie between Some Mother's Son, Waterloo Sunset, and Strangers.
I actually just put together my top films of 2017 list! You/anyone else can let me know what you think or if you have any recs or questions! I have upwards of another 10 films that I'm still eager to watch that I'll hopefully get to in January!
Oh nice, real bluesy! Tough spread but lemme try.
Jackson C Frank - s/t
Robert Johnson / Blind Willie Johnson - Complete Works (both relatively short)
John Fahey - Days Go By
(There's an awesome blues list on RYM if wanna explore more based off these first few)
Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Song
Kingston Trio - Here We Go Again
The problem is how expansive and diverse abrasive music like metal and hardcore have become. Take one look at the map of metal or the number of flourishing subgenres within metal that rateyourmusic lists (and those are just the direct descendants of metal, many of those have their own subgenres too). It sort of feels impossible for one list to not only cover that much territory, but also to somehow evaluate records that barely sound alike against each other that are still within the metal sphere.
A list that includes Mötley Crüe and Sunn and The Dillinger Escape Plan might cover more area, but the rankings of which would be almost arbitrary with how little those artists sound to each other. And you mention using it as a frame of reference for what you're missing, but then you might go into that list liking any one of those 3 artists and think the list is awful when it doesn't give you other releases you like because of how varied the genre has gotten. (Not you specifically, but a general reader of a list).
Super basic but I really don't think anyone's made a better album than Kendrick Lamar this year. Also I haven't listened to any new albums in the past few weeks as I've been deep diving on some older albums, but I'm excited for the albums that are coming out this June.
inspired by jterp yesterday, i present my updated AOTYSF list. looking forward to y'all tearing it apart.
currently listening to that sinjin hawke album right now, and this has potential to be added as well.
Yeah I've been exploring metal basics (plus more outside the list) over the past few weeks or so. I think I like the more slow-paced/doomy stuff the most but I've liked black metal a surprising amount. The vocals are still a bit heavy for my tastes but it's been growing on me over time honestly. The Burzum album has been my favorite in the genre so far
>Favorite movies
Well here's my 5 stars on RYM. Some highlights:
Aguirre
Airplane!
City of God
He Got Game
Hoop Dreams
Moonlight (Recency bias maybe but this was amazing)
https://rateyourmusic.com/~dawsboss
I've only been rating albums the last few months, and it's biased towards a high rating only because I went and rated music I remember listening to, and I'm obviously going to remember more music that I liked instead of music I hated.
But my 2017 rankings are up to date as of today!
Yeah, that's a common problem for that one because the title is so damn long haha. It's actually this release listed on RYM and is performed by Reinbert de Leeuw.
Hope you enjoy!
I've been listening to lots of 2017 releases. The top 6 albums there are all worth a listen, with Tangible Rays - Seance, and The xx - I See You being my favourites!
I'm also still slowly getting through listening to and rating all noteworthy 2016 releases. Recent additions to the list: Kaytranada - 99.9% (7/10), Run the Jewels - RTJ3 (6/10), Chris Cohen - As if Apart (7/10), Anderson .Paak - Malibu (7/10), and Noname - Telefone (7/10). All good albums, but I still haven't warmed fully to RTJ3 for some reason!
From u/days-of-candy:
> My good friend Shazam says the song is called In Undertow and the album's title is Antisocialites
> Okay, did some additional research and found some more new song titles (not 100% sure they are all on the album though):
>Already Gone
>Antisocialites
>Dreams Tonite
>Echolalia
>Forget About Life
>Hey
>In Undertow
>Lollipop (Ode to Jim)
>Not My Baby
>Plimsoll Punks
>Saved by a Waif
>Your Type
Soulseek is a computer program which basically lets you download anything for free. I just got it yesterday and it literally has everything no matter how obscure. You can download it here and if you have any questions ask away!
Yeah! I'm kinda in a drone hole atm but I can always throw some recs in the wishlist pile! What kind of psych are you into? Do you have a RYM or a Lastfm I can base my recs off of? Here is mine if you wanna look https://rateyourmusic.com/~jterp21
Visitor - [*Visitor EP*](https://rateyourmusic.com/release/ep/visitor_f5/visitor/)
Raum - *Event of Your Leaving*
Pacific UV - *Pacific UV*
Seven Percent Solution - *All About Satellites and Spaceships*
No roasts since 2009 was such a mediocre year I can't give you shit for MPP ;)
Perfume Genius - No Shape
Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
Lorde - Melodrama
Jay Som - Everybody Works
Kelela - Take Me Apart
SZA - Ctrl
Jlin - Black Origami
Björk - Utopia
Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked At Me
Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory
I wrote about my top albums of the year on RYM, so you can check out my top 31 here.
I don't know how experienced of a hip-hop listener you are but if you want a decent amount of variety, I put together a list of my favorites recently that you can check out! It's definitely skewed towards the south compared to most but I'd honestly be shocked if you didn't like something in that top 20.
If you need recs, feel free to hit me up - hip-hop is probably my favorite genre so I'm always down to talk and get others more into the genre!
I agree with you on DnB, I've never been a huge fan of it, especially at its peak. Some of Aphex Twin's more "drill"-n-bass material really turns me off from one of my favorite artists.
BTW, I spent a few hours listening to that Amon Tobin album today. I liked it, but I was hoping it would be more jazzy after how good the first track was... just felt like more low-key DnB with jazz influence. Good, but nothing amazing except for that first song. But his other albums have more acclaim, so I'll have to go through those.
Here are some good lists from a great RYM user with a large knowledge of electronic music:
I don't really listen to leaks
1: Sampha - Process
2: Avec la Soleil Sortant de sa Bouche - Pas Pire Pop I Love You So Much
3: Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
4: Planning for Burial - Below the House
5: Peter Silberman - Impermanence
I've listened to a lot of albums from this year, so I'd like to plug a couple more if that's ok:
6: Rainbrother - Tales from the Drought
7: Pile - A Hairshirt of Purpose
8: Slowdive - Slowdive
9: Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
10: Tangible Rays - Seance
Full list: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/mynameiscian/2017-albums/
Fleet Foxes - Crack Up
DAMN.
Pond - The Weather
Dirty Projectors - s/t
Slowdive - s/t
here's the rest of my list https://rateyourmusic.com/list/three_headed_boy/2017-albums/
it may be easier for you to just go thru and pick the ones you don't know vs. me comparing it to the list you posted to see the differences.
was bored and ranked my top 90 hip hop albums of the 10s. only genre restriction was that it couldn't be instrumental.
anyway roast me.
I wanna just quote jshopa's RateYourMusic review of Ænima which sums this sort of thing up perfectly for me:
"Cookie recipes, old-timey organ intermissions, testicle jokes, stand-up comedy samples, weird messages from a Green Jellÿ members' answering machine, songs about fisting, about scat play, about all the yuppies drowning when Los Angeles falls in the ocean, and about as direct a fuck you to cries of sellout as has ever been written, yet people call this overly serious and pretentious? Come on."
I'm looking for more noodle-y guitar porn like Chon. Most of your djent bands (ie: Meshuggah, Animals As Leaders) are too metal for my liking, so if there's something on the lighter side of things, that'd be a good place to start.
Also, if you guys haven't used Every Noise at Once yet, you should.
https://listnd.com/listened_albums/danguy
Checked out some new releases: Stone Temple Pilots (which I liked), Huey Lewis (which I liked, and I'm glad Huey is still able to work given his health as of late), and Tame Impala (which I liked).
https://listnd.com/listened_albums/danguy
Checked out a few Twenty One Pilots records today. Good stuff, but I haven't fallen in love with anything yet
https://listnd.com/listened_albums/danguy
I had already heard Nine Inch Nails' Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral and most of The Fragile, but I had the idea to listen to the rest of their studio albums and some of their EPs. While Trent Reznor's output has definitely been of a consistently good quality, especially for someone who's been active for at least thirty years, I think I prefer the aggressive material of Pretty Hate Machine, the Broken EP, The Downward Spiral and The Fragile. Everything after that, for all its maturity, didn't leave as much of an impression on me.
https://listnd.com/listened_albums/danguy
I've been on a King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard binge lately, but I also checked out the new Leonard Cohen album. Good stuff.
https://listnd.com/listened_albums/danguy
Albums I recommend:
A friend of mine made a game for android phones called Flappy Pong. Despite the name it's actually a pretty creative idea and the game is quite good for an amateur game designer IMO. It'd be cool if ya'll could check it out.
