I've seen a pretty fair number of '70s and '80s mecha series but that doesn't sound like anything I've ever seen.
Maybe helpful, Anidb's list of shows tagged as mecha from 1975 - 1985:
Daigunder is my best guess.
If you're confident that it aired on ABC Family then you might want to check ANN's page for the network and see if you can find it there. You might also try /r/tipofmytongue.

You can get Tomino's original trilogy of Gundam novels inexpensively on Amazon.
Amazon put it up too. Supposed to get it same day for $2 more vs waiting 2 days from Sentai.
Yeah, Vol 2 came out a few years ago. Its out of stock on Amazon Maybe its out of print?
The 30 Minute Missions line, some of the Iron Blooded Orphans Graze kits, or the Frame Arms line will fit your needs fairly well; the Type 32 is pretty close to the first two pics.
I really REALLY appreciate that, but just hanging on there for now XD
Getting money means tax and paperwork and time, so avoiding it until things really get in gear ^-^ I can do that because i am solo and don't have to pay other people either... yet... First version that i'll share with people will be on itch.io and i'll disable donations for it too ^-^ If or when the time comes for content development, then this will NEED to be a business...
>Japan Animator Expo describes the story:
>People of star similar to Earth, built the civilization on the ground of the various places, like our world was so. And they were led to the global war by science force evolved. But in this star, there is a secret that don't know even for residents.
According to Anime News Network:
>In the interview that followed the teaser, Kenji Saito (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance) revealed that he is directing the game's development team that includes staff members from Bayonetta 2 and The Legend of Korra. The game is single-player only, and the game offers an Autobot-only roster for player characters. The game not only draws inspiration from the original 1980s animated series, but also from the ongoing Transformers comics from IDW.
>According to a previous listing, Transformers Devastation will ship for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on October 6. The game will have five playable Autobots: Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and Grimlock. Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime), Dan Gilvezan (Bumblebee), Frank Welker (Megatron and Soundwave), and other voice actors from the original 1980s animated television series are reprising their roles.
Update to this story: The publisher is now saying that the listing is in error, and the release is not yet scheduled.
Have you tried looking at the discord?
I think you can find someone to form a group there.

Pretty fun AND it's not P2W which is amazing
Found it posted over in [/r/Gundam](/r/Gundam)
In this case I really don't think it has anything to do with origin yet. Hopefully we'll get some info on that soon as well.
"Dead Mech" by Jake Bible is the first of a trilogy of books with an audio release. It's mechs. It's zombies. It's zombies in mechs. XD
Solid mecha action with atleast one twist on the genre that took me off guard.
Combat Frame XSeed, by Dragon Award winner Brian Niemeier.
I really appreciate your recommendations, looking at them all now. Also, thinking of getting this book:
Do you think is a good book to get him into the world? If you are familiar with it, do you know of any model(s) that I could get that might have a character from the same book?
Thanks so much!
Thanks for showing interest! The game is still quite rough at this stage but you can playtest it if you like.
This is the link to the test:

I also remember Mickey Mouse and friends getting their own combining mecha, which you can view here.
MSRP as listed in the article is $39.95, but it's $24.39 on Amazon right now.
I've been playing Halo recently & although it's not in that same mecha genre, he does wear an armored-type suit. Why the game developers didn't have him exchange the suit for something like a mecha once he got on ground somewhere, I don't know, but it would have been awesome to game within something like that.
I don't know if you've ever heard of Drake's Hammer's Slammers, and again it's not mecha, but military. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammer's_Slammers
I would second the Haldeman's Forever War recommendation. Great book.
Something like Mecha Corps might interest you. I have not read it. http://www.amazon.com/Mecha-Corps-Novel-Armor-Wars/dp/0451464311/ref=pd_rhf_gw_p_img_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=196VBX72GYMCZ2F4ZGPE
