So u/deynos74 was right about it being French, and pretty close with late C14th, actually very early C15th, 1412-16 is when it was painted.

Real gold leaf isn’t outrageously expensive (although it’s not cheap either lol). You can get imitation gold leaf as well for much more reasonable prices.
