I LOVE this player. I just upgraded to a Synology 918+ 32 TB system and an Nvidia Shield from using a Synology 214Play 16 TB system and a WDTV. I was struggling with finding a player with a “simple yet elegant” look because of the control that WDTV offers (and I’ve customized the skin/layout to my liking).
I found your app by downloading pretty much all the media player apps in the Google Play store and working through each of them and yours is BY FAR the best. Please don’t change very much outside of bug fixes and basic improvements.
Two questions about future functionality:
1) Will this support embedded PGS subtitles? Currently DG Media Player does this and so far it’s the only competition to yours for my needs.
2) Will this support embedded chapter files? I know Kodi does this, but it’s not anywhere near as stable as Nova in my testing.
I’m not a fan of MX Player, Kodi, nor Plex for various reasons.
I'm running the latest version of Nova and can still use it as an external player. Although I'm not using the latest Android version on my Shield Pro as I hated the new main screen and the fact it affected some external players like K$di and possibly Nova. So Android 12 could be the issue. Maybe someone with the same issue might make a comment. I can possibly test this for you as I have a Xiaomi 4K Stick in the kids playroom running latest version of Android. Can you mention the other apps that listed nova? Or PM me if your are concerned about mentioning in the comments. In the mean time, have a look at the app "Better Open With" this might help, but can't promise anything. Good luck 🤞 👍 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aboutmycode.betteropenwith
I have just published an update that should improve the scraping.
Note that thetvdb.com is still not ok: poster ranking is missing, many posters not available (returning error on download) etc... This is really annoying and I apologize for the inconvenience.
All: I just pushed a new release that should solve the non scrape issue for tvshows. It should be available soon.
This is not perfect and I am still trying to understand the issue that might be due to thetvdb-java library we are using in combination with thetvdb.com latest backend changes...

Update: v4.16 has been release on google play that should fix nova crashing updating metadata for tvshows due to latest thetvdb.com API changes.
This will however not fix the scrape itself that should be fixed when thetvdb.com addresses their upgrade problems. Note that it impacts other apps than nova as well.

This is due to a change in thetvdb.com site: it is not due to nova.
I will publish a version of NVP soon that switches to newer thetvdb API (but it will not solve the problem seen there).
Another suggestion: On the now playing screen, the name of TV Show episodes that appear at the top of the screen should be replaced from the "TV Show Name - S01E01 - TV Show Episode Name" syntax to just the name of the episode provided by the TheTvDB.com scrapper.
> Subtitles aren't loaded (although they are present in the MKV).
I’m willing to bet it has to do with the PGS subtitle format. I’ve found that Nova can read SRT files fine (default DVD subtitle format), but can’t currently read PGS files (default BluRay subtitle format).
I’ve provided that feedback as well.
If you use MKVToolNix you can determine the subtitle file format.
