Some recent books I've been reading...
The Science of Learning/Hard work/Accomplishment
a. "Peak", by Anders Ericsson -- phenomenal. Completely changed my perspective on talent vs. work.
b. "The Talent Code", by Daniel Coyle. Also pretty good. Talks about the research of Ericsson, which prompted me to get "Peak".
c. "Deep Work", by Cal Newport. Okay. Some real thought-provoking stuff but also long sections I found uninteresting.
d. "The Power of Habit", by Charles Duhigg. Interesting but not great IMO.
Mystery/thriller
a. Harry Bosch Series, by Michael Connelly. I grabbed an audiobook deep into the series at random, liked it, and then read the whole series from the beginning. Outstanding.
b. Mickey Haller (Lincoln Lawyer) series, also by Michael Connelly. I only tried these after I was toward the end of the Bosch series. I may like them even more than the Bosch series, they are great.
c. Joe Gunther series, by Archer Mayor. Meh. Only did one but it didn't hold my interest.

Not gonna go all ‘good bye cruel world’ here, but have any of you heard of or done a ‘digital detox’? My kids allergist at children’s has a huge social media following and daily digital presence and publicly started his time away today. He says he will still be at work seeing patients but will not be online for 10 days. He linked this article:

So, I thought I’d lokk at the web traffic stats for The Ozone and 11Warriors. The links below are from Alexa.com.
For the Ozone, year over year Global rank has dropped by 129,796 to a Global rank of 295,962. US rank is 52,149. They have had a steady decrease since December. I can see a decrease after January, but the decline started in early December, before the Playoff game. It appears to level off around May. Page views and time on the site are down 21%. Bounce rate is 31% and up 2%, but that is less then 11W at 43%, which seems high.
It appears that Mr Ed. does not understand Search Engine Optimization. The top search keywords that lead to the Ozone are: Ozone osu, Ohio Ozone, Ozone Ohio State, Ozone, Osu Ozone. Not Ohio State Football or OSU Football. Compare below to 11W’s search keywords.
It is interesting 6.6% of the people come from 11W to the Ozone.
For 11W. They are at global rank of 42,616, which is only down 32 from the year before. US Rank is 7,802. They also saw a decrease after January, but they saw a large spike upward in late December, where the Ozone started it’s slide in early December. 11W had a strong uptick staring in mid April to be almost flat for the year
11W has less pages views (2.94 v 3.4), but more time on the site (6.04 v 4.22). The keyword search that leads people to 11W are: Ohio State Football recruiting, Ohio State Football, Ohio State Football forum, 11w and ironically, Ozone osu.
Ozone has a better education profile then 11W.

A couple of months ago, I shared the news that my new book on grief had launched. Some of you mentioned you purchased it, but I can't remember who. If that was you and you've read it, could you do me a huge favor and write a review?
If you or someone you know is grieving, this is a life-changing resource and the reviews have been amazing. Here's the link if you're interested:

Speaking of Chic Harley, I read this book a few years ago about his life. The Columbus and Ohio Stuff was both interesting and a fun read. The personal details and walk through Chic Harley's mental illness was quite sad.

I'm one of those idiots driving into a blizzard. I have AWD with snow tires, chains just in case, so I'm not too worried.
For the record, these trips almost never work. Sometimes the road is closed before I get there. Sometimes theres no visibility or high winds, so they don't open much of the mountain
We have our Nest units set cooler at night, but not 55. At 60, the heat almost never comes on, so setting it lower than that wouldn't save much.
Many years ago during an extended power outage in Ohio, I had only our little gas fireplace to work against outside temperatures in the teens, trying to keep it warm enough that pipes wouldn't freeze. Temperature in the house decreased very slowly over a couple of days, so I got to experience extended periods of room temperatures down to about 50 when power was restored.
55 was downright uncomfortable, even when wearing warm clothing. Any exposed skin would feel quite cold, tiled floors and toilet seats were almost painful to come in contact with. 55 isn't a whole lot better than just turning your heating system off, in my view -- it's a number where you think you're saving a ton of energy, but if it actually got that cold in the house you'd probably crank up the heat rather than suffer.
Though I guess it's easy for me to say that when I'm living in a place where A/C runs daily and heat almost never.

Any of you guys cut the cord to PS Vue yet? I am sick of paying Time Warner $235/month for cable, internet and a phone. Looking at Vue, I can chop the price in half at worst (and maybe even further). From the looks of it, the only thing we lose are local ABC and NBC but I can get those OTA.
It looks like this eventually could be useful for cord cutters (but seems like we have a decent guess on network tv coverage.) Seems like youtube tv at $35 a month would be the best package to watch the Buckeyes....they have unlimited DRV, up to 6 accounts, BTN, ESPN 1,2,3 and a complementary chrome cast.

I recently signed up for Ryan Holiday's newsletter for his book recommendations. I'm only a few weeks into it, but I picked up 'The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival' based a newsletter from a few weeks ago. I generally hate getting newsletters, but so far this one seems to be worth it. I picked up a couple of his books too. I'm getting 'The Tiger' today, so I haven't read it yet, but in addition to Holiday raving about it, the reviews are pretty good too.
Here is the blurb about The Tiger from Holiday's newsletter:
Damn this book is good. Just so good. Even if it was just the main narrative—the chase to kill a man-eating Tiger in Siberia in post-communist Russia—it would be worth reading. But it is so much more than that. The author explains the Russian psyche, the psyche of man vs predator, the psyches of primitive peoples and animals—and he does it in such a masterful way that you’re shocked to find 1) that he knows this, and 2) that he fit it all into this readable and relatively short book. I’ve recommended this book to thousands of people and have heard countless times how much they loved it. Not a single complaint.
I also just started 'The Death of Expertise: The Campaign against Established Knowledge and Why it Matters'. It seems like it'll be OK, but I'm not far enough into it yet to know if I'll like it or not.

Guys if anyone is interested in a great book. This was written by a friend of mine Braxton McCoy. I met him thru one of my veteran networking events. I have a young friend who is going through a tough time s he his leg needs to be amputated due to deterioration. He ran over an IED on his 2nd deployment. For those that watched The Outpost he was there on his first. His family is a mess so I have been helping him. He has become almost a son to me. Long story short I got Braxton involved and he wrote in an additional chapter for Josh ( it’s not in the published book). I am giving to Josh for Christmas. I promise you this book will change your perspective on life

B/c some of you are much smarter about this stuff than I....does it really matter which modem I buy if I'm cutting the cord? Wow only stipulates that it needs to be DOCSIS3.0 wth that means. Amazon has this one for $60. Will that suffice or do I need something better? If better should I go for an all-in-one that inclues wifi?

WWI was brutal. Let me recommend the movie The Lost Battalion. I checked to see if you could stream it on Amazon Prime, but you can't. You can pick up the DVD for $6.99: https://www.amazon.com/Lost-Battalion-Rick-Schroder/dp/B00005U8F4/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=the+lost+battalion+movie&qid=1558793394&s=gateway&sr=8-3. It was originally a movie made for television, but it tells a great story about Major Charles Whittlesey. He is both heroic and ultimately tragic. The movie was praised for its historic accuracy. If you get a chance to watch it, I think you would really like it. It is a story in history that needs to be told again and again.
Re: Gillette below, how do you guys shave? About 5 years ago I bought a double edge razor. That was about $40. Blades come in a 100-pack for $10. Actually, just checked, my brand of choice is $8 on Amazon. That's right, 8 cents per blade. I tend to use a fresh blade for each shave, but if you don't care about a perfect cut, you can re-use the same blade many times. It's not an exaggeration to say you can do a year+ on an $8 pack of blades.
I think back to when I bought the Mach-3 replacement packs and just smh. The amount of money I threw down a drain...
This may be of interest only to historians like Scorpio, but I'm nearly done with Conquerors: How Portugal Forged the First Global Empire. Really interesting read, about a period of history (1400s - 1500s) I would like to better understand. Some takeaways:
Portugal went from not knowing if they could circumnavigate Africa to being a major force in the Indian spice trade, over about 20 years. Extremely impressive feat.
Life was brutal in the 1400s. Not news, but a lot of these chapters ended with "everyone was burned alive" or "dozens drowned".
The Portuguese were brutal. One of their most significant leaders of that time wrote a letter to his king explaining how he executed hundreds of Muslims - happy times.
Finally, separate from the book itself - one sees and hears so much about how shitty 2020 is. Global pandemic, economy shut down, etc. "Worst year eva!!" No, no it is not.
For those of you who have Kindle Unlimited, I have enjoyed Genome, by AG Riddle. It's light science fiction - I read book 1 ("Pandemic") a couple months ago then put off the second book. Starts slow, but the plot is very engrossing. Most Kindle Unlimited books have a simple/superficial plot, but this series is mapped out really nicely. Think "the opposite of the Disney SW trilogy."
Friar, I strongly recommend this book. First of three. I just finished it and it is superb.

Very good for you too.
I don't personally. Two rules when connecting in public places. Run a firewall. Make sure anything you're doing that you don't want stolen is done with a HTTPS site.
In general, I say you only need VPN if you want to hide your identity from the server/website you're connecting to. I don't need that. I need the dude sitting next to me at starbucks to not be able to sniff my traffic or hack my laptop/phone. Firewall and HTTPS give me that.
edit - and to distiguish from what zanzibar is talking about above.
Torguard is VPN for general web browsing. You securely connect to a Torguard server which then proxys all your traffic. I don't do that.
Setting up a VPN so you can connect securely to your home network would be useful/recommended. And, many people are familiar with "VPNing into work". This is common and recommended.
Per your HR discuss below, have any of you read (I'm listening to) the book, "Disrupted"?
I'm only about half way into it, but it is hilarious / borderline scary about the ineptitude of dot com start up "entrepreneurs". The HR stories are mind boggling, but for a lot of you in the bigger corporate world dealing with the "average" employee, I'm sure you see it daily.
If you want the book on tape when I'm done, PM me and I'll send it out. It's worth listening to.
you guys would love these...100% grated cheese
Not to go all duke buck on you guys, but I highly recommend this aquapod waterproof bluetooth speaker. I use it everyday in our shower because our shower is also a steam room and is airtight, so you cannot hear the bathroom Amazon Tap very well when the shower door is closed. It's inexpensive, very light and has great sound. I took it on our trip to use in the Air BnBs as well. It syncs immediately. It's a great value and I don't get paid for this.

Read Ball Four in HS. That, and Instant Replay were my favorite sports books.
I just remembered another sports book I liked back then but I bet nobody here ever heard of. It was by Johnny Sample, a "dirty" DB who played for the Jets and was run out of the league. https://www.amazon.com/Confessions-dirty-ballplayer-Johnny-Sample/dp/B00005VOFG
Can only recommend one that I have and I'm not finished yet.
I think this is it. Looks a tad different. Just power washed the whole back patio (huge) beautifully.
That wasn't the description in this book I believe it was an eyewitness account from an embedded reporter. Big difference between a jet an an helicopter.
Me too. Getting one of these to try with the pavers this year.
Also, /r/powerwashingporn (SFW)
I'm sure they work fine. Stores/businesses have been using them for years to boost signals.
I have a different suggestion to consider though...Link2Cell handsets. We have these.
You can link up to 2 cell phones (via bluetooth) and use the handsets throughout the house. So, the outgoing call uses your cell signal...leave your cell phone within bluetooth range of the base in an area of the house that has good cell coverage. The handsets use normal cordless phone (2.4GHz or whatever) wireless inside the house.
I have a stand alone router but it's an older (3+ years) NetGear N300. Using it with the new modem, it will be close to the modem as well. I have an extender in another room that covers the balance of the house. Given this info does that change your thoughts?
Edit: considering this all in one.
Re: my wi-fi / ISP situation, I switched to Spectrum today for phone/internet ($65 / 100 mbs); dropped Windstream ($73 / 24mbs, and went this direction for my space/time continuum. Dude at Best Buy said it was the best way to go for many devices/many users and too much distance between them all.... so, we'll see.
If you want to do it yourself, this is what my BIL used to convert his childhood tapes.
Otherwise, there are services in every town now to do this...not sure how much per tape...maybe $25...wild guess.
Beer guys- check out this DotD from Duke. This thing looks kinda interesting. They have it in stainless on their website.
Mula, of photography interest....I bought a used Soviet era lens for $50. I love it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UHUXI52/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The biggest thing that is unique about this lens is that the bokeh is more circular toward the center of the photo and more oval-shaped toward the edges. It creates a swirling effect.
If you cook with cast iron, this is a great item to use to clean it. Just hot water and this scrubber, and it is clean.

You can get one of these systems (upright or cocktail) for about $650 (on craigslist in columbus) with 60 classic games. That's really cool IMO. Of course, you can get one of these or similar and plug it into your TV for less than $20. :-)
There's a prime music app for your phone too or especially useful if you have and Echo/Dot/Alexa appliance.
The basis for his case is that earth will not be able to continue supporting humans b/c we will exploit all of earth's resources. If you read Ashlee Vance's biography, he gets into the topic pretty well since it's essentially what's driven Musk to do everything he's done with Solar City, Tesla and Space X. It's a fairly quick, easy read.
We use an olive oil diffuser
Don't judge :)
Morning and night for me is a floss pick, electric toothbrush, and a Tung brush.
If you haven't tried the Tung brush, it's amazing for bad breath. The amount of gunk on my tongue is out of control, and scrubbing with a normal toothbrush doesn't do the same job. Plus, the tung brush is flat so it doesn't gag me.
I learned of this when we went on a guy trip to Vegas 20ish years ago and shared a room 4 ways. One of my buddies had one and swore by it. I got one shortly after that and have made it routine since.
Welcome to TMI Wednesday!
My mom and dad were from Mingo County, West Virginia. I am not sure you can get more Appalachia than that. They came to Columbus in 1965 to escape. My dad was part of a much larger movement of people leaving behind coal mines for greater economic opportunities. At the time my dad left, there were still plenty of jobs in his region, but almost everything revolved around working in or in support of coal mines. Everyone knew people receiving payments from insurance for black lung and on permanent disability before they reached the age of 60. It just seemed like the smart thing to do to find work that did not kill you or give you a permanent health problem. In the mid-60s, Ohio had plenty of factories, and Columbus offered both blue and white collar jobs. The smart hillbillies left town. My uncle who moved from the same region up to Cleveland around the same time that my parents moved to Columbus told me just a few years ago that the reason that part of West Virginia looks so bad compared to the rest of the country is that anyone with motivation left. Those left behind for the most part (there are exceptions) had the least initiative. The older generation that felt too old to move continued to try to preserve what was good about the area, but after they died, the next generation refused to pick up their civic responsibilities. This probably seems like a harsh assessment, but I have sympathy for the region. I spent a lot of time as a kid in western West Virginia and eastern Kentucky visiting family. I am sympathetic to those who feel left behind or trapped there; I don't have much sympathy for those who refuse to help themselves.
If anyone is looking to read a good book on the region, here is one that is a bit expensive: Growing Up in Bloody Mingo.
The higher risk was from an accidental detonation due to the B29 crashing because of its inherently unsafe design. It wasn't built to be dropped by air, it was a test stand design.
For more fun, look up the story behind a Titan missile that blew up inside its silo in Arkansas in 1980. The book about it discusses other nuclear mishaps during the Cold War. It was simple a miracle that there was not an accidental detonation or launch during that time frame. The chapters about actual missing weapons is more than interesting.
Amazon Deal of the Day - I have one of these...thumbs up. Yeti knock-off 30oz tumbler
When I read Rhodes' book 10 or 15 years ago, I was floored at how simple/straight-forward the gun-type bombs were/are. Up until that point, I had a vague notion that nuclear bombs were...you know...really sophisticated stuff that required the best of the best minds to assemble them. Nope. There's only one way to prevent a gun-type uranium bomb...prevent someone from obtaining the appropriate amount of enriched uranium. Period.
Of course! Seriously though, not very concerned with Zika. It's winter there and Rio isn't a hot spot regardless (the pro golfers who live in Florida and decided to stay home probably have a greater chance of contracting at this point.)
I'm more concerned with the potential for pick pocketing or outright mugging, but even then, we have 10 people going down so hopefully strength in numbers and avoid the bad areas. My buddy picked up these: https://www.amazon.com/Sanuk-Pick-Pocket-Sidewalk-Surfer/dp/B00375MFBM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470056351&sr=8-1&keywords=pick+pocket+shoes
Since we are recommending books, I'll recommend this one. There was a program on PBS put out by the National Academy of Sciences that was later converted to a teacher's guide. The author addresses each evidence from the program and teacher's guide point by point. The author is a very intelligent guy, not some uninformed hick with an attitude or a conspiracy theorist.
Has anyone else here read the book by Geert Wilders, "Marked for Death?"
Geert is a Dutch politician who has essentially been in protective custody for years because of his outspoken views on Islam.
The book was incredibly informative to me. It blends the origins and development of Islam with recent events (even though it was written in 2012) and very clearly describes how this is all part of their long term plan.
I highly recommend it.

Ah. It sounds like you might need the 75-300 then. But maybe wait to see how far you can get at 105mm.
