It's easy to reddit.

For the beginners you go to /r/all and find posts you like. Then you visit subreddits where the posts are from and go to /top of that subreddit and subscribe if you like it. After you do that like for 10 to 20 subreddits you'll see your front page full of posts that you like.

A couple of videos showing positive Wine progress, showing people using Linux for gaming shouldn't be moaned about, it should be encouraged. This isn't a subreddit just for native ELF binary games, it's a superset of playing games on Linux.

That all said, not all videos (or posts) have the same value. Some of them have shown "smooth" performance at 360p resolution or that it works but it's glitchy as balls. That something is technically works without crashing isn't news. Save it up and let us know when it's playable.

But megathreads are useless. Just tone out the rubbish.

I also had the same problem a while back. If you want to hide or filter out posts from subreddits, download RES (Reddit Enhancement Suite). Do note that you need to do this on desktop. Once you set it up there, it will work on mobile also.

People make pop culture references because those references let them connect to people with shared experiences in a way they find fun and positive. They create a feeling of belonging to a community.

No, no one is going to be a part of -- or even familiar with -- some references that mean a great deal in the lives of other people. Still, the sharing of references brings happiness to people that do appreciate them.

If these comments are bothering you, you can add the Reddit Enhancement Suite to your browser. It gives you an option to "hide child comments" so that you can easily ignore a cascade of comments that don't appeal to you or distract from the comments you wish to read.

Using RES. One of the tools it gives you is a little tag next to people's names that you can fill in and pick a color for, like so.

I strongly suggest banning repacks entirely. I love Fitgirl and respect her, but people can follow her website and subscribe to the RSS feed.
It feels that filters are now an inseparable part of the subreddit and using them is mandatory if you actually want information about cracks.

Reddit Enhancement Suite is far more effective in filtering unwanted content. You can filter based on post flair and title ("daily releases" for example) only on specified subreddits. /r/CrackWatch filters have to be manually applied and only one can be selected at once, don't work on your account front page or with multireddits.

It's super effective - Let us all try and withstand the urge to reply and just let them think they're shadowbanned or something.

One of the main reasons they post their trash is to engage someone. Don't give them that. Lets let them fester at the bottom of the comment section with a lonely 0 replies.

You can filter out these kinds of comments by using the Custom Comment Filter using the RES addon.

Filter out annoying comments by adding a "Filter any comments where comment contains":

Protip: it's two new lines to put a new line in the final comment, and most importantly, use RES to preview your comment (and improve reddit's interface in general).

There's a feature in RES that gives you the option to block subreddits out of your popular page. If you hover over the r/ there should be a box of info that has the "filter" button.

Maybe they're talking about the new redesign, which would make sense. However, I use Reddit Enhancement Suite & old.reddit for desktop to customize the page to fit my needs, and I've never had a problem at all with desktop for years.

It also depends on what app they're using. The Reddit is Fun app is great too and has almost as much customization as you would get with RES without all the BS the official app has, so I can see why some might say they prefer mobile since it's easier to lay in bed and keep scrolling. For me, I like to multitask on PC with more screen space, CSS / custom layouts and just use RiF when I'm tired in bed or on the go.

/r/help seems to be the proper subreddit for questions.

I'm not speaking for the whole mod team here as they have their own thoughts on this, but my opinion is that we aren't here to curate the subreddit for every single person. That being said, if we notice trends that can affect the sub negatively we will try to step in and take action.

If you don't like a post and feel it doesn't belong in the subreddit, just downvote it and move on. If they get enough downvotes then hopefully they and other users take the hint. People like different things, and ultimately we can't keep creating more megathreads for fluff like this. It's not like the sub is flooded with posts every hour as well so you don't have to constantly sift through posts you don't like.

And for desktop users, you can filter posts yourself using Reddit Enhancement Suite. I highly suggest using this add-on (both for chrome and firefox I believe) as it improves the reddit experience by a ton through lots of customization features.

I don't think anyone's claimed fatphobia isn't real. /r/fatpeoplehate was a real sub so we all know there's people who will discriminate on weight alone. I don't think I've ever seen anyone on this sub claim that the posts here represent all fat people. It focuses on a very specific group and points out their hypocrisies and faulty logic.

Yes, lots of people treat their bodies poorly and yes we only focus on the fat ones. This sub is called /r/fatlogic. If you want, you can make a sub called /r/bodyhamrlogic and talk about your friend and fat people all kinds of other people who harm their bodies while denying any adverse affects.

No one is being picked on because all identifying information is censored so there's no way to know who to pick on. No one is being shamed for being fat. That would be against the very first rule of the sub. So no, no one would shame your friend for harming his body by doing parkour. But personally, if he were my friend and I cared about him, I might try to talk to him and get him to be a bit more careful and mitigate the risks as much as possible. But ultimately, it would be his choice and I would respect that.

However, if your friend regularly went around denying the dangers of parkour and tried to get little kids to join him at the gym to train, then yeah, we'd probably shame him. He's spreading misinformation and it's dangerous. You can do whatever you want to your own body but don't try to push that shit on other people.

If all of this sounds boring to you, maybe you shouldn't visit this sub. No one is forcing you to be here and if just seeing our existence is upsetting, you might consider getting RES to filter this and other offensive subs out of /r/all.

Once installed, reopen Reddit. Find an /r/the_donald post (shouldn't be too hard) and hover your mouse over the '/r/the_donald' link on the front page. A sub menu should pop-up with various options. Click the 'Filter' button to remove the sub. I just did it last night and it's been a breath of fresh air not seeing all the bullshit from that sub.

It adds a ton... and I mean A TON of options for you to customize the site with and I honestly can't use reddit without it.

Here's my settings. Just in case you don't want to go over 5 pages of options. See if they suit you. They are for chrome, I don't know if they work with the other versions. Just import them into RES when you install it.

Yes, especially when it's obvious when it's something like pornhub.com. You knew you were linking to a porn website yet didn't mark it. I'm clarifying this is not allowed and thanks for fixing it.

And again yes, there's lots of rules associated with what you're saying. That's why many subreddits only allow certain domains as well as have things in place to prevent users from linking to NSFW for subreddits. It's less of an issue nowadays since the NSFL shock subreddits are quarantined or gone, but the point still stands.

Reddit Enhancement Suite helps to show which subreddits are NSFW too without having to navigate to them, so there's little excuse to be linking to a NSFW subreddit without knowing.

with minimal effort, we're in near 100% control of our reddit experience:

1 - install RES & use the ignore feature. use it a lot. this alone will filter most of the nonsense.
2 - don't read/reply to threads that seem to be self-evidently low quality or inane; e.g. the umpteenth re-iteration that JP/the sub "doesn't understand post-modernism," or "it's not real Communism, Marxism, etc." this is exactly what u/Seekeroflight means above.
3 - when confronted with difficult or ambiguous claims that could potentially warrant engagement or investigation, check the account details of the person(s) involved. promptly ignore those with a history of dumb, inflammatory or thoughtlessly anti-JP statements. this is precisely ad hominem, and it's absolutely appropriate when attempting to filter through the noise produced in (most) online forums & especially when dealing w/ issues like briganding.
4 - ignore people who use aggressive language or make claims about what's "really happening" in other people's heads.
5 - friend people whose posts you find insightful & spend more time perusing their stuff instead of aggregate subs.
6 - broaden your interest to include other places set up to encourage participation from deliberate, thoughtful people--r/SlateStarCodex leaps to mind.

a parting shot: if you find managing your experience on an online forum to be so difficult & frustrating as to ask/encourage/demand babying, how in hell's bells are you supposed to manage things more complicated & messy by orders of magnitude like your career, health or relationships?

If you're using RES on Chrome you go the RES Settings Console.

From there you go to the "Subreddits" menu and the "filtReddit" tab.

There you can add in rules to filter out either specific subreddits, such as /r/the_donald and so on, or even posts with certain titles.

I use RES to help my reddit navigating. It is quite useful in tracking my up and downvotes per user, along with tagging certain users or blocking others from my reading. There are not a ton of people I don't see comments from, but it helps remove some of the shitposting. Please also report reposts, clickbait links, etc to help the mods weed them out.
The main thing I keep in mind when clicking to the comments on a post is that if they start to annoy me or are just full of shitposts, then I need to just move along. Reading some of the arguments and shit on these threads can be too much, so it is easier to move to the next conversation than trying to save the one that is swirling around the toilet.

In the meanwhile, you could move nsfw subreddits to a multireddit (see r/multihub for examples). you'll have to use old.reddit.com/subreddits/mine to edit multireddits, but you can navigate to them on new reddit from the hamburger menu on the left.

Hey man, semi-related, I don't know if you have this option while browsing reddit as I use RES, but there is an option to slow down streamable links and it's a pretty good thing for those fast paced videos. I recommend it, here is a link.

I'd actually say its a silent minority that patch it out, and a mostly silent majority that use said patch. RES is used by a lot of people.

Sure there are millions and millions more who don't use it, but that's not the point I'm trying to make. I am all for it existing, and even there being a toggle/opt out for it to be (or not be) the default. But I don't want it forced on me any more than you want it taken away.

There's an easy solution to this problem!
1. Install the Reddit Enhancement Suite browser extension if you don't have it already.
2. When you see a post from one of the offending subreddits on r/all hover your cursor over the name of the subreddit until an info box with options pops up.
3. Click the "+filter" button at the bottom of the box. This will block any posts from that subreddit from appearing in r/all for you in the future.

As a fellow mod (on an alt), I recommend reddit enhancement suite to help label harassers/bad-faith participants. I personally don't like banning or muting, but it helps me keep an eye if a thread's being brigaded by "questionable" actors.

Most of the reddit apps are generally not considered very good, particularly the official app. I believe there are a couple of things that are slightly more difficult or complicated to do on a mobile device as well, due to screen size, but overall you aren't missing anything.

If you do get access to a computer, you should install the Reddit Enhancement Suite browser plugin. It gives you a ton of additional ways to tweak the site as well as allowing you to tag users and various other things. It just makes the site much more useable in general. The official subreddit is /r/Enhancement.

Secondly, since you're new to reddit you might want to install the browser add-on Reddit Enhancement Suite, which among other things can:

help you format text (including a preview of the final product),
enable and disable the css on subreddits,
enable night mode (hell yes!),
Never ending reddit (no more need to switch pages),
preview Images, Gifs and Videos and resize image previews.

Use RES and you can tag people. Like I know nimo is an irrational supporter of kanye and in is generally intractable. With a simple tag I can easily remember not to engage with him knowing it won't lead to a productive conversation.

Are you on mobile? I think it can only be done on desktop unfortunately. But, as SpectacularFactor said, you can download RES to add more options to use on Reddit, including tagging and highlighting users, filtering subreddits, and other features.

You can disable the custom CSS by unchecking "Use subreddit style" in the sidebar.

Or you can try tweaking the CSS by installing Reddit Enhancement Suite and going to Options -> Appearance -> Stylesheet Loader

There are literally a hundred thousand people here. A couple of them are dicks. NBD (no big deal).
Those little arrows next to every comment & post are voting arrows. If you upvote something, other users will be more likely to see it. If you downvote it, it may disappear entirely. So, use accordingly.
This forum is a very broad, general interest forum, mostly used by novices, plus a handful of grumpy old know-it-alls. There are other forums: there's /r/Motorrad, /r/motorcyclesroadtrip, and /r/motocamping for example. In general, the smaller the forum, the less it sucks.
RES will let you look at photos and videos without leaving the site. Good piece of software.

The only thing that RES might "help reddit" know is that you use RES, because RES self-identifies when it makes API calls with a parameter like "RES=true" or some such.

I've got an interesting idea for the expansionary period to help our fellow neoliberals combat the trolls and prevent friendly fire.

Most people on here already have RES, if I were to guess. What I would suggest would be reminding our subscribers to tag the more active shills on this sub in order to prevent friendly fire downvotes in the /r/all threads or during periods of heightened brigading. Mods could create a list of very active users and remind people to tag them as $hills or something.

In addition, if we all got Sorostools (formally known as Moderator toolbox) it could go a long way to determining if posters were engaging in earnest or were just trolls. Just tap the [H] button and get a nice digested post history for any user. This could prevent people from being obnoxious to people with genuine questions and reduce the amount of time spent trying to engage in earnest with trolls.

Just a thought.
