Berol highlighters may not be what was used in the pic, but it's such a beautiful, bright, crisp, neon yellow highlighter line that almost anything else pales in comparison. Try them out!
But in this case, no, it’s actually quite affordable. You can get a cheap holder for around 5 dollars and a pack of 10 nibs for $7.
It's easy to reddit.
For the beginners you go to /r/all and find posts you like. Then you visit subreddits where the posts are from and go to /top of that subreddit and subscribe if you like it. After you do that like for 10 to 20 subreddits you'll see your front page full of posts that you like.
It's nice to have you here. And have fun
Edit: I forgot to mention one very important thing. To make browsing reddit easier RES is a must. It's much easier with that little tool.
Edit2: One other thing RES has is jumping to next post. So you don't have to scroll down at all, you just press a key (default: 'J'). You can change that if you go to RES settings>browse>keyboard.
It's a (kinda cheap) JinHao pen I got from Amazon - I'll edit this with the model number
EDITS: Elegant Jinhao Black Matte Fountain Pen (it's not that elegant)
I picked up these books several months ago and have been very slowly making my way through them. I try to learn the shape of one letter and put it into practice and just write a lot. I don’t worry too much about sticking to a schedule... just once I start feeling comfortable, I learn a new letter.
I believe it is actually the Pentel Sign Pen . I have a single one in purple and the tips bends and looks exactly like this one does
If you are talking about the ink you can buy from Amazon.
One thing to keep in mind is their is another brand called ‘Coliro’ that has finetec as well but I tried it and didn’t seem to work the way I thought it would. The link I provided looks like the Finetec gold I used but it doesnt show picture of the packaging so I’m not 100% sure.
Thank you! They are BIC Gel-ocity pens (medium point) and they are my FAVORITE. I’ve bought the 12 pack and an additional 4 pack because I like them so much. And they have so many colors! I’ve bought them on Amazon and at Target; I’m sure they’re available at Walmart and any office supply store as well.
Here is the link for the 12 pack on Amazon:

Yes I absolutely can post some links, give me a few!
The easier answer! - The wooden letters are these:
Search for “movable alphabet” it’s a Montessori material :).
They aren’t magnetic though.

The pen in the video is a Pilot Metallic Silver Paint Pen
I highly recommend both the silver and gold from pilot. I use them primarily to paint on vinyl records but the concentration of the ink is amazing. I've used many different kinds of paint pens in my art and these are also the most consistent and vibrant of the metallics I've tried.
Something along these lines, any medium priced brush pen will do, especially if it says "for lettering".
Tools used: Procreate 5x, Apple pencil, iPad Pro 12.9.
The script is Fraktur (Gothic Blackletter) and the brush is one of the flame brushes from this set
It's a $70-ish pen. Realistically, that's equivalent to two nights out, if you go to college in a big city. Or, if you're in a rural area, that's three nights out.
When I saw this post, I thought that I'd found the rare college kids that values a relatively obscure hobby enough that he or she makes it a financial priority, and thought it was both endearing and admirable.
But your abrasive comment completely changed my mind!

For what it's worth, I spent all four years of engineering undergrad using a $30 drafting pencil. I used it for another three years after graduation, until the plastic portion of the barrel literally fell apart. I then bought another, identical pencil but for only $10 this time and use it almost daily. That's cheaper than a 12 pack of the standard 0.5mm mechanical pencil, which I guarantee you won't last you a year and, sure as hell, won't last you 7 years.
Assuming you don't get obsessive about it, having good writing tools is much cheaper, in the long run, than buying disposable tools. When you have a quality tool that fits your needs perfectly, you grow to love that tool and, believe me, you won't lose it. It becomes almost like your phone - you always know exactly where it is. And, again trust me, until you've used a writing tool that perfectly fits your needs, you don't realize how much you're missing out on. Writing suddenly becomes a joy and taking notes, completing assignments, or writing essays on exams often ceases to be just an annoying task you have to get out of the way and becomes something you almost look forward to.
No joke, it can really be a life changer.
These Paper Mate InkJoy Pens and these Sharpie S-Gel Pens are chefs kiss.
With respect to the subreddit name, I'd also like to note that this is submitted with the title "flambe calligraphy". I'm no expert on either subject but from my very small amount of experience, good penmanship and its consistency, and beauty in mark-making are on the same path.
I think it's work mentioning that Western calligraphy and Asian have quite different goals in mind. Where Western calligraphy seems to focus on consistency and uniformity perhaps stemming from the structure of the characters themselves and the practical nature that calligraphers had historically in Europe (this is just my speculation). Of course, these ideals are similarly evident in Chinese and Japanese penmanship for sake of legibility as you suggest, though in the realm of calligraphy I think absolutely a 'prized aspect' of which is uniqueness and expressiveness.
Take for instance this rendition of the Japanese Kanji 「華」 for flower. I would not characterize this as necessarily legible, or suggest that its intention was to be legible, but I think we can agree that it is quite beautiful. I went to Tokyo when there was a contemporary calligraphy exhibit on at the National Art Center and it definitely gets more abstract and less legible than the above example.
I don't disagree that this may not be the best example of penmanship, but I don't think that the uniqueness in OP should not be valued or appreciated. I think at the end of the day, once you've mastered your a's, g's, and d's, it can be interesting to see what you can do differently. Pragmatically speaking perhaps you're right that its no good to anyone... but at least it's interesting.
Thanks! I started out just mimicking photos from Instagram and Pinterest which helped me kind of just get the feel of the nibs.
To practice control, consistency, and flourishing I got these guides:
Inovart Calligraphy Underliners https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005A0IXFY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_.jb8CbP6XV2ED.
You can also make them if you don’t want to purchase them but they are laminated and durable. I also use a little laser pointer from Home Depot to write straight lines. A good way to start is to get vellum/tracing paper and lay it over the guide and practice each letter upper and lowercase over and over until they look the same. You can also purchase letter tracing guides but I’ve never used them. Look up something like “calligraphy letters” to show you all sorts of variations of the alphabet and choose one you’d like to try out.
Videos are helpful and there’s tons on Instagram and YouTube that help give you a visual idea of how to practice. I recommend using the Nikko G nib, which is firm and gives good practice to learn how to create those thin upstrokes and thicker downstrokes with varying pressure on the nib. You can also use the Hunt 101 which is very flexible and easy to use. And the last recommendation is the Brause 361 (or Blue Pumpkin) which is also flexible and holds a good amount of ink. I started out with the Brause and now the Nikko G and Hunt 101 are my faves.
Tip- all nibs come with an oil coating to prevent rust. They won’t hold ink very well until it’s removed. The quickest way is to just run it super quick through a candle or lighter fire.
Hope that helps! If you have any other specific questions, feel free to PM me!
This was the starter kit I got, the paper that comes in the kit sucks, so I recommend getting some parchment paper. I played around with the different nibs to help me figure out what I liked best. Then I bought other kits that had nibs specifically for the calligraphy style I like (copperplate).
/u/arthurspoodles has some good suggestions! If you're interested in dip pen calligraphy, I'd recommend trying out this set from Speedball. It's the one I've been using to learn, and I've found it to be really easy to use!
Shoot, they were $7.99, sorry for the error on that. Here’s the link/description from Amazon.

this exact pen can be purchased with a rollerball on Amazon for $8.00
But it takes a crappy Chinese refills and the end is too narrow to hack anything else into it unless you drill it out or something. You should check out the Parker Urban or (my personal favorite) the Parker Frontier. Both can be found on Amazon as well for less than $15.00, and you can throw pilot G2 refills into them by adding a spring.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Pick up Orgo as a second language, helped a ton for Orgo 1 and getting my base. Orgo one is basically learning the language and rules of the "game" and ORGO 2 is applying said rules to situations and figuring out what's going to happen! Good luck and like everyone said, don't put it off till the last minute!
I've been practicing for about a month or so :)
I'm very excited to learn copperplate but haven't got that far just yet!
My favorite pen is this one. and this one.
I don't have much experience with authentic fountain and oblique pens but I'm working on that too!
I write with my fingers, I keep my arm pretty steady and just move my wrist.
It's just personal esthetic. I just try to do what I think works and looks the best!!
Thank you sooooo much for your interest. :) it means the world!!!
They have these drawing gloves for Graphics tablets. They only cover the pinky and ring finger, but they can really help with smudging with normal drawing or writing. This is a link to a generic one, i haven't tried this exact one however. I'm not sure if they will make them in the correct size for your child however. Might be a neat thing to check out. https://www.amazon.com/Smudge-Guard-SM2-SmudgeGuard2/dp/B00XITP96K
I feel ya -- mediaeval Latin is hilarious when writers get inventive with vocabulary and grammar, but any more Augustine and I might cry. This is 'Winnie Ille Pu' translated by Alexander Lenard (I bought my copy used in a bookstore, but it's available here on Amazon). Have a go at the Latin versions of Harry Potter and The Hobbit as well!
At the suggestion of a few people, I've set up a Patreon page. If you like what I've been doing, please consider supporting it. You will help keep me in ink and coffee (i.e. Supplies) and it's only a $1. If enough people support this, I can start selling prints at a discounted price.
Regardless of whether or not you click the link, THANK YOU. You guys & gals (or however you self-identify) have been amazing. This subreddit has kept me motivated over the last two weeks and no matter what, I'm going to keep going...
TL;DR: Click this link and give me a buck. If not, that's cool.
This paper is from my nomad journal, it’s made to have a vintage look. The black ink does look nice on this paper in my opinion.
You can get this vintage paper look with brownish watercolors on watercolor paper.
Sharpie pens are the best. I write a LOT for work, and it's so enjoyable to write with. Doesn't bleed through the paper, yet still gives a nice, confident line. Not to mention you can get one for under $1.
Edited to add: Amazon link
In fact, we're still waiting for you to explain how "solyndra" was a scandal in the first place.
>Overall, the agency has loaned $34.2 billion to a variety of businesses, under a program designed to speed up development of clean-energy technology. Companies have defaulted on $780 million of that — a loss rate of 2.28 percent. The agency also has collected $810 million in interest payments, putting the program $30 million in the black.
No scandal, just another one of Obama's policies making the country money while trump loses it :)
I see a lower case d with the kind of abstraction or expressiveness you see in Japanese and Chinese calligraphy. I'd say it's quite interesting and would hate to see this kind of exploration banned from the sub. The match cut is a bit cheap but it's fun so what's the harm.
It's a Levenger L-tech 3.0 Stealth FP. Got it from massdrop some time ago. The pen is built magnificently, it's a fully metal body. Though since it is all metal, it is HEAVY for a fountain pen. My new everday carry since it's built so tough.
And I think this is the Disney+ Link—I rewatched it with my husband on Disney+ during the "free first month" trial thing. Its realitively short, and it's easy to binge, I think everyone who watches it/watched it will recommend lol

I felt the exact same when I was an almost-13-year-old! I've always loved cursive and calligraphy. My 8th grade English teacher used to assign handwritten journal entries every week for our reading logs (do you still do reading logs?)
Anyways, I taught myself cursive and used the entries as practice. I haven't gone back since! If you ever want to teach yourself, look into getting a cursive workbook from Amazon! They're super inexpensive. Here's their best seller if you're interested :)
ha yeah I think it's just a pack of this stuff from Amazon! To be fair, I retouched the video a bit to increase the contrast which probably helps. Shooting black with my home setup is usually pretty difficult, no matter how much light I feel like there is, it always seems to come out grainy unless I really push the levels.
Back in the day I worked for an engineering firm and ordered all their supplies. Pen and ink on mylar was standard. We used imbibed erasers from Koh-i-nor. Apparently, they’ve been discontinued and are stupid expensive. I should have snagged about 20 boxes. Lol
Hmm, I’m in Aus sorry and and I just got it from the local stationery store. I don’t know what you got from amazon but this is the pen in my vid: https://www.amazon.com.au/Uni-Ball-153-Signo-Broad-Point/dp/B00KK6X7CW
These are the ones that pop. Liquid ink dry erase.
Its not a fountain pen, but the Pilot V5 are my writing pens of choice.
Pen snob & fellow parent here - I write constantly in my profession, and have yet to use a pen that is worth more than $20. There are some fine art calligraphy pen/ink sets that that are worth a little more, but any script meister worth their salt depends on workhorse products…not ridiculous showboat ponies.
—Zebras are by far the best “click” pen. —I’m partial to Pilot fine point V-Balls for everyday notebooks —Japanese Bemlp pens can be found on Amazon. - also great for taking notes, cursive script…and they aren’t something you see outside of that market very often. They aren’t refillable, but very inexpensive for good-quality ink delivery.
Just don't tell them your own username. ;)
In addition to the G2, I don't really know if they are "fountain pen worthy", but I've always liked the Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pens. I use them for signatures and give them away as gifts.
A six pack is ≈$15 USD.
They are steel nib. They are made to be one-time use. You can't refill them (I don't think?). But they would help, maybe, get a sense of "try before you buy".
Your kid has some serious talent. They're short on context and perspective. That's pretty common for any tween or teenager.
If you know this expression, it might help them: Only a poor craftsman blames their tools.
It would be foolish to buy someone an F1 race car before they learned how to be proficient at kart racing. Focus on fundamentals.
i.e. They need/want "a" fountain pen, but they don't need "the buy-it-for-life" fountain pen...at least not yet, not for a long time.
Good luck with the parenting. :)
The fountain pen I use daily: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SM9CSWT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
$13.26 USD, writes smooth and consistently. Makes a great gift for someone who's earned it by not being shitty to their mom :)
I'm not offering to send your kid to college... just buy them some pens :)
If you want I'll be happy to pick up these Pilot G2s for you kid. Nothing extravagant, but it will definitely be a good start, and way better than "shitty Bics". Send me your PayPal address and I'll shoot you some monies for pens.
I admire this kid's tenacity. However a $1000 pen is ridiculous for an adult, let alone a 12 year old. That said, this is pretty amazing penmanship. I'm a huge fan of the Pilot G2 line of pens. I use them exclusively after a recommendation from Reddit.
I will personally buy your kid some "fancier" pens if they promise to come on this sub and show off their skills. Message me and I'll make it happen.
I've recently ordered this magnetic paper-like screen protector from Stary on Amazon. It has some decent reviews, and I should be getting it really soon. Super excited, and of course I'm not expecting it to be the equivalent of paper or something, but I hope it does the job!
Thank you. People started to talk badly about Fiverr and i didn't create an account yet. Dribbble seems more proffessional. I still don't know how this drafting works but any help will be appreciated.

Hi u/sincerelyanonymus, u/busselsofkiwis, u/calminventor, and u/Lord_Blackthorn,
Thanks for your comments and checking this out. Both pen and ink have pretty humble origins! I am in no position to afford vintage or Montblanc anything, ha! The ink is actually just plain old food coloring. I'll even dilute it a bit to get a lighter color or just to make it stretch, but I "splurged" on my Christmas cards and used pure food coloring here. The pen (which I call Persephone) is merely this cheap beginner's fountain pen, but with some...alterations. I originally got it from a friend who said it was "broken." My idiot self attempted to "fix" it by cutting off the tip of the nib with a pair of scissors. It worked out since the pen is now able to produce the unique, textured writing you see. However, Persephone only writes with the nib facing down to the paper, opposite to how fountain pens regularly write, and can be plain cantankerous to work with at times. I still love how it writes, though. Maybe one day I'll post a video of me writing with Persephone!
Looks a little inspired by Spencerian/Copperplate
If you want practice you can do use these:
There's a book in the set dedicated to birds and stuff.
Elenor Winters has a good book on Copperplate.
Livingston parish. French Settlement to be exact. But Joseph was from Ascension parish by way of Donaldsonville.
Here is a link to the ancestry tree I’ve been able to put together if you’d like to compare to find a common match. Heberts are kind of like Smiths but you never know! If you find a common match, please get in touch. My doors are open to anyone with family ties. I could probably introduce you to a bunch of cousins too. Haha
It's not a gif. Use the u/SaveVideo thing other people have in these comments. It provides a mp4 video download link: https://redditsave.com/info?url=/r/PenmanshipPorn/comments/knp2s6/goodbye_2020/
Then convert that mp4 to gif using this link: https://ezgif.com/video-to-gif
I'm pretty terrible at to-do lists, myself, but I tend to go with having one "permanent" list of things I need to do regularly (anywhere from every day to every week) and one list of one-time things I need to do relatively soon. I add the one-time things whenever I think of them, and check everything off right before bed.
There are also a number of websites you can use that turn to-do lists into games. This is the one I've used, but there are a lot of others, as well. (The one I used is apparently called "Habitica" now, not sure when that happened, but it'll be listed in most places as HabitRPG.)
I used Tombow Fudenosuke for the cursive.
https://www.tombowusa.com/markers/fudenosuke/fudenosuke-brush-pen-2-pack.html
For the print I used Sakura Micron PN

In second grade, the school secretary would come to our classroom on certain days and teach us from this book for a few months. I absolutely hated it. Now, it hurts me to write in print but I've retained my burning disgust and disdain of American cursive.
For the same price as a lamy I'd recommend the Twsbi Eco, which is the pen I used for this! They are not difficult to maintain at all, to be honest the only maintenance fountain pens require is a simple cleaning with water now and again. It takes about a minute and can be done with just a cup of water or even in a sink. Highly recommend!
The lamys are good and if you get one you won't be disappointed, but they aren't really as great of a deal as they used to be, there are so many better pens now!
Here's a link to the pen I have: https://www.gouletpens.com/products/twsbi-eco-fountain-pen-black?variant=14023986642987
Edit: that is by no means the cheapest fountain pen you can get. If you'd rather not risk 30 bucks Amazon has a jinhao X750 for 7.99 on prime. These are fantastic pens for the money and will be able to tell you if you're into fountain pens or not

Thanks! There are a few issues with it. I'm kicking myself for failing to loop over the second D, and my second T has a more cramped tail than the first. That was right around when I had two yowling cats right off-camera begging for attention, ha.
Yeah, that's a flat LED light board like this with a simple template that I designed to go underneath. I have templates for one-line, two-line, and three-line quotes, sized and spaced to be centered on 7"x5" sheets, which is what I typically work on to sell on my Etsy page.
Netjes! (And the book: How to be a straight A student will help you so you don't have to start the day before the test ;) Wish I'd read that when I was still in school!)
I started off learning Spencerian script with this book before focusing more on Copperplate just through referencing exemplars from sources such as The Universal Penman. I'm sure there are a million online sources now, great videos to check out and even more image sources, but that's where I started!
Oh, certainly. It's just Windsor & Newton gold ink. Available on Amazon.

I went back and looked and you are correct the left brain is (opinion) logic dominant and uses language, where the right uses none thus not accessible through direct action. With that said, I'm just a dude who read a book. Which I recommend, more of a philosophy book, but good none the less. The Master and His Emissary, by Iain McGilchrist
I don’t know a whole lot about fountain pens, as I’m new to the hobby, but i would assume you could just get a new converter. It’s not the same kind, this ones a piston, but it theoretically should serve the purpose just fine.
You’re very welcome!
Sorry, idk how to shorten the link or change it to words, but Kuretake carries 2 full-color lines (available in up to 144 colors if I recall correctly) so I wanted to show you the ones I’m talking about: https://www.amazon.com/Kuretake-Fudebiyori-Color-CBK-55-12V/dp/B003AM7BES/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1515697467&sr=8-4&keywords=kuretake+brush+pen
And make sure you don’t get these ones:

(nothing wrong with them- they have a brush instead of sponge tip so they’re harder to use)
I absolutely LOVE lettering and all the supplies; and sharing what I know is so fun, so feel free to message me if you have questions! :) And if you don’t care about color, just trying to get your technique down, I can go crazy with recommendations there!

>Q: This is the book you are writing with a fountain pen.
A: I’ve written every word of it so far with fountain pen on paper. Part of the theory was that it would make me less long-winded, but it hasn’t actually worked. I think it has improved the quality of the actual work somewhat, simply because it is actually easier to edit something on paper than on screen. So usually every page of the original manuscript has been gone over 2 or 3 times before it goes into the computer and then when I type it into the computer that’s another pass again where I can make changes if I want to.
This is the set. I used the "fine" nib attachment to write the above.
Ay, not a dumb question at all. Yes, they were, and it's a Pilot Parallel Pen 6.0mm. Usually one would write with the broad, flat surface but you can also use the corner of the nib for a fine line. It's not the smoothest fine line and can be messy, but it gets the job done.
This is a lab notebook that I bought off of amazon. Some inks bleed, but the lamy stock blue seems okay. Here's an amazon link to the lab notebook https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00653RS24/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Feels plasticy I guess, it's really just a matter of taste. They are not actually cheap, I just don't like them. And you need to tell me where you get such nice pencils for under $10 because amazon has those at $15.
No, but you can use a Pilot CON-50 piston converter to use pretty much any ink with it. As for the white ink, I found a guide detailing several options.
Ahh!! That's it! I used to get these all the time, Japanese stationary stores are really something else. My favorite was very small, but 5 stories tall, and had just about everything you can think of.
Amazon has the pen & pencil: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018RF0IQ/ http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018RHUM0/
Now I just need a justification to buy some. They feel like they most amazing portable pens to insert into moleskin type diaries.
are the holders themselves pretty much all the same and differentiation would be in the nib? I just received this today and I'm worried about the quality (haven't got a chance to use it yet). Any suggestions?
After Al Kitaab 1 we worked through the second Al Kitaab. Now I'm conversationally fluent, meet with a language partner once a week for an hour, and take a class about the media and news, all spoken in Arabic.
I also read Sayyidi wa Habibi by Hoda Barakat, which was a great level-appropriate novel after Al Kitaab 2.
It's modern calligraphy. I would recommend getting this book Modern Calligraphy. Has projects and tons of letter styles. The best thing about it is everyone's is usually a bit different so there is no need for total perfection, just beauty. :)
