While, yeah, you don't wanna skimp on a holster/belt, you definitely don't need to spend as much on the holster as you did on the gun. That's crazy.
I bought this holster/belt off Amazon a year ago, and I think it's held up incredibly well. The leather is thick and stiff, the pattern work is pretty enough for being obviously rolled on, the stitching is good, and the holster is solid. Everything's tight and feels well-made. My only pick is that the line of the cartridge loops isn't perfectly straight.
I don't know why I'd want to spend any more money than that.
I got them off amazon . I think they are Smith and Wesson grips Smith & Wesson K/l Frame Square Butt Revolver Grips Hardwood Finger Groove Checkered Handmade #Ksw10 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AIJZ0YI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gZLQCbQ5ZWG4G

fits good and covers the barrel completely
Disregard the picture, that's the right part#
This is what they look like. They make them in tan and black left or right handed.
That Ruger is made from extremely high quality stainless steel, so it's pretty hard to mess anything up unless you use some harmful chemical or abuse it with tools that shouldn't be used, but you'll be fine. Once you start shooting it, you'll see how difficult it is to clean the cylinder face.
These work very well for a lot of people. Not a necessity, just an option....
I really do not shoot revolvers unless it has a rubber grip anymore. I have the Taurus poly defender. Quite manageable in 38 special. Stout but doable in 357 magnum. It came with the two and three finger grips. Put on the longer ones and never looked back.
My first handgun was a double action 44 magnum. Never had any trouble shooting with the rubber grips. I know people say the wood looks better. No longer care. Tires are rubber for a reason.

In case you don't have it, this works like magic. Just cut off a little square with some scissors and go to town on that cylinder. I use it on my GP100 with wonderful results. Note: Don't use it on blued guns.
My vote isn’t as sexy as the others but this hogue rubber grip feels infinitely better than the stock grips. Plus all your fingers fit. For reference mine is a black TALO SP101 with hammer.
I'd bet it is. I just bought these yo practice with:

Compared to your 642, the majority of the actual felt recoil will be absorbed by the weight. So even the 2" 60 will slap your palm significantly less than what you're experiencing with the 642. Where the 3" shines is sight radius and muzzle stability (and of course velocity). It is noticeably easier for me to get good hits with a 3" barrel. The extra distance between sights makes it easier to notice and correct a slight misalignment of the sights when you're shooting double action. The 3" seems to point better and hang on target much easier, imo. There is also the advantage of longer ejector rod travel. The 3" gun gets the empties out much more positively than the 2". There's also the reduction in muzzle blast with the 3"
Something like the Pachmatr Compact grip with its covered backstrap will do an admirable job of reducing discomfort.
Bullet weight plays a huge factor as well... 110-130 gr loads will but less torque on your wrists than the 158gr loads (at similar chamber pressure).
Yeah I did. I got the one linked below:

It’s not too bad as long as you have extra drill bits (and a chuck small enough to work with them) and go slow. I used a bit as a punch to tap the pin in and out.
Beautiful revolver, I recommend some Hornady anti rust spray since it has no bluing left. I've tried them all, there is a guy who tested them all on steel plates in the rain for a month and it works. https://www.amazon.com/Hornady-9990-Shot-Cleaner-DynaGlide/dp/B000LC9YM2
For a few months I've been using this inexpensive but very good Gun & Flower holster for my J-frame Model 49 and 642.
It's fiber reinforced polymer, similar to Kydex but smoother texture, and isn't thermo-plastic (it can't be remolded by heating). There's a palpable snap when inserting and drawing the revolver past the friction button, same as most Kydex and fiber reinforced polymer holsters. No problems with mine jogging or exercising.
The wide clip needs a 1.5" belt to hold securely. I usually wear baggy casual shorts with belts. For running shorts with elastic waistband I'd need something else, like a belly band, waist pack or the PHLster Enigma.
For sweatpants or attaching directly to fabric, check out the Ulti-Clip, or the Tek Lok by Blade Tech. These clamp tight directly onto fabric. Both get good reviews so pick whichever version best replaces the spring clip on your holster.
And if you replace the G&F holster later, at least for some purposes, you're out less than $20. I have one for my Shield Plus and they're as good as any similar simple but secure Kydex type holster I've seen.
I plan to try something else for when I'm not jogging outdoors, but the G&F has been a good starter.

Don’t get disappointed when you can’t hit the broadside of bars with this gun past 15 feet.
Been training for years, and I have to concentrate hard to hit past 10 feet with this. For most defense purposes, it’s perfect wouldn’t bring it into a war or knowing gunfight. For that, I have other stuff to grab.
For a pocket holster, I’ve tried many, but I keep going back to all these years the good old Desantis Nemesis pocket holster
I went with this, but had to make some modifications for ease of draw (removed the stitching above the hammer).
It is this. I use it daily and really love it.
I also tried these hogue ones at one point. They "fit" but I don't recommend them. There is no way to use the hogue attachment at the bottom of the frame without contacting the main spring and I could feel it affecting the trigger pull.

Just got a speed loader holder today! I went back and forth with different options like the velcro pouches and a 2x2x2 pouch .
Ultimately I just wanted an easier way to carry a speed loader that wasn't bulky. It cost me 10 bucks off Amazon, and seems to hold the loader ok. Definitely had to bend the metal a bit to make it "tighter" but it feels like it can come off rather easy. There is a small rubber square that presses against the holder to keep it steady but that's it.
I carry two more speed strips in a designated pocket or in the "watch" pocket of my jeans.
Anyone else have a better set up or system?
I just picked up my first wheel gun! I traded my Glock 43 for my buddies 642. I loved carrying my 43, and I loved how easy it was to conceal. But deep down I've always wanted a revolver.
I went to the range and fired about 100 rounds through it (ouch) and cleaned her up after.
I just ordered a set of Hogue grips because my pinky does not wrap around the current grips (Uncle Mikes).
I listed the holsters and accessories under the pictures. I usually wear over garments which allows me to carry OWB (3 o'clock), but I have an IWB holster (appendix) I use as well. Ammo rides in a designated pocket for now (strong side). Considering picking up a speed loader pouch but the ones I've seen appear bulky. I've seen a 2x2x2 ammo pouch that may fill that niche.
Any recommendations for grips or holsters?
I’ve used a soft pocket holster for that purpose, but there has to be a good lined one available.
Edit: This one looks decent.
Alright here’s what I’m kinda leaning towards. A kydex Harry’s Icon holster, but I’m also kinda leaning towards this leather one so that I get it timely https://www.amazon.com/Waistband-Leather-Holster-Special-Barrell/dp/B00K95Z6QY?th=1&psc=1
I’ve never used a leather IWB holster for concealed and am honestly a little sketched out by it, but I don’t know that that’s a reasonable fear or not.
Those are great grips. Only thing I added to mine was this front sight:
HIVIZ GPLW01 Ruger GP100 Interchangeable LITEWAVE Front Handgun Sight Green, Red, White, One Size https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MRAPIGC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_MMg.FbMBZ1N21
This is for 4" revolvers, but it's got an open bottom so you could technically still use it. Prob not the best choice but you should have options.
This cheap amazon holster:
Concealment Express: S&W J Frame 442/642 Tuckable Ambidextrous IWB KYDEX Holster - Custom Fit - US Made - Concealed Carry Holster - Fully Adjustable (BLK, Tuck) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079V2X8ZH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pX-lDbJ386DDM
I opted for the ulti clip upgrade. I can wear it with athletic shorts and comfortably go for a jog. I bought the 360 when I started trail running. Not too worried about any game animals, but I wanted something light that would stay put. This holster worked well without a belt. Otherwise, I just threw it in a Galco pocket holster. Still worked great but I bought a 442 recently for dedicated pocket carry. Little more brainless should I need it.
yeah and it'll depend on how tight and fitted the pattern is. This holster, for example, ostensibly fits all 3 but they're cheating a bit with the boning. https://www.amazon.com/Bianchi-Cyclone-Holster-Fits-Python/dp/B005PT05SI

Polar you can find video tutorials online that show how to trace a revolver for a holster. If you've got a decent trace of the GP 100, it'll help you infer if & where its dimensions are significantly different from your pattern, so you can adjust. And if it's a pattern to be fitted by wetting, the leather will be able to be stretched a bit, though less as the leather weight increases.
I take a Talo edition 22 LR in my pocket inside a Desantis X5 holster on my nightly walks. Hindsight I’d have purchased a 22 Magnum. I don’t shoot it that much but palming a 22 LR in the dark when I’m in a pair of running shorts and a sweatshirt if I see a car slow down suspiciously or u-turn after they go by is a nice better to have and not need item. I’m usually covering 4+ miles a night and have other guns including a 21A. But I like my NAA.

I went with safariland speedloaders, they’re fucking great with it. No twisting to release, they’re spring-loaded so all you do is push them down into the cylinder.
Great find on the revolver, almost exactly like mine, but I switched the wooden grips out for Hogue rubber grips. They’re real helpful with heavy .357 loads, or a ton of shooting!
Here. just not that cases like this are for transporting, not storing. Storing guns in these or foam cases is asking for rust.
I've found these Pachmayrs to be pretty good. Your mileage may vary on how you perceive the fit of the grips though. New Pachmayrs don't fit together nearly as nicely as older ones, but they'll do the job, feel great, and have medallions and checkering. I personally prefer their look and feel over comparable Hogues.
I bought these 5 yrs ago. Comes with red, white and green light tubes:
HIVIZ GPLW01 Ruger GP100 Interchangeable LITEWAVE Front Handgun Sight https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MRAPIGC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_lXmjFbV6NKFJ4
It looks like a modded Hogue grip. I have a stock one on my SP101 and love it. More options here.
I think you have the wrong size loader.
You’ll like the Safarilands. You don’t have to twist a knob...you just push them in.
Here’s the size for your gun

If you are extremely low volume, you can get into reloading with a manual, calipers, a scale, and one of these:
With some practice you can make 25-50 an hour with this. It's a little loud but eh I think it's fun.
You should buy at least two so you can compare data. Sometimes they will have somewhat different ranges to work with.

This is a good read to familiarize yourself with carrying a weapon: https://www.amazon.com/Snubby-Revolver-Backup-Concealed-Standard/dp/1581605714
It's based on data from incidents and makes recommendations on what to be aware of, what has failed, and what has worked. An excellent starting point for those considering ccw.
My Smith & Wesson Model 60-7 38spl with 2" barrel used be my EDC gun before I switched to the Glock 26 earlier this year. I still keep it in rotation for times when I want something less bulky. I pocket carry the S&W using an Elite Survival holster: http://www.amazon.com/Elite-Survival-Pocket-Holster-Revolvers/dp/B003C5UR4Y/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1446145872&sr=8-3
I originally used a leather IWB holster on my strong side, but I found it uncomfortable, heavy (this is an all-stainless revolver), and difficult to draw from when wearing a tucked-in shirt over it. While there are downsides to pocket carry, I can consistently and comfortably carry that way. I recently had the hammer replaced with a bobbed one; I'd highly suggest using a hammerless or bobbed hammer revolver if you're going to pocket carry.
As for carrying a reload, if I carry one I usually go for speed strips. I got good with loading from them by unloading the rounds from the cylinder into it before bed, then reloading from the speed strip in the morning. This also loosens up the strip a bit so that it's easier to load. I have some speed loaders, but they're really too bulky for me to carry in a way that's easy to get to when needed most.
