Definitely interesting, I have a few questions/thoughts:
What's the quality of the video like in motion? Between the relatively small video size on a phone and the less than stellar reviews of USB video capture devices like that, it seems like it would've been easier to just buy a display like this ( https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0746CM3G7/ ) which is about the same price as the video capture device but gives a larger display (and likely clearer due to not needing to convert the video) and could be easily mounted/wired without needing your phone connected every time you want to use it.
On the software side: I didn't have a chance to look through the code much, but how does the app get a signal to start displaying video? Is it just when the camera starts outputting video or is there separate wiring for triggering it?
I'm in software development, but haven't used Android studio since university. Do you know offhand what version(s)/configurations of Android this supports?
Would this work with multiple cameras (likely with app changes) ?
Though the vast majority of people (here especially) would probably add a backup camera with a new radio or separate display, this is still an interesting and unique solution.

Which head unit does yours have? There are different HUs in the 2nd gen tCs depending on the year. I had the Pt546-00160, which was the standard HU in the 2016 tC. It didn't have RCA or Sub out, so I used an LOC. The performance was not really great as the sub hardly had any bass. It was like the HU was not delivering enough for it to sound good. Did adjust the levels on the LOC itself and on the sub, but that didn't help. What I ended up dong was swapping that HU with an older one from an older Scion tC, which does have RCA and Sub out already. When I switched the HU and connected the sub to the Sub out, the sub was finally giving some output. Even the front speakers have more bass now. Everything else like steering control and the USB all work great, and the lights on the HU even dim with the dash lights when I adjust them. Plug and play basically.
So if you want to install a sub and your HU doesn't have RCA or Sub out, I would strongly recommend going with the aftermarket HU or a compatible factory HU with RCA and/or Sub out.
This is the LOC I used:

Nice, if your camera ever fails though I'd recommend one without the ball mount. I have one like this (not identical, but similar design) for my rear and it's a lot less obscuring: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07SRQH4R7/

I'd recommend getting this. It's called a pedal commander and all it does is increase throttle response. It makes the car a lot more fun to drive. It's just plug and play and they're vehicle specific so the one I linked you is meant for 2011-2016 tCs. Also an axle back exhaust and a cold air intake would also help.

Depending what tool(s) you're using, this story may be applicable to you:

I remember when I did my first oil change on my '12 (same engine so same oil filter housing). I used the generic oil filter wrenches and had a hell of time. By the time I did my second change, however, I had read up on some forums that a guy was custom making a tool to make oil changes specifically on these housings. He ended up selling some himself and I bought one off him. Night and day difference for how easy it was to do with that new tool.

Eventually, he either started working with a company or people started ripping off his design, meaning that you can buy this oil filter wrench for dirt cheap making oil changes way easier and having a tool that's stronger than the generic oil filter wrenches.

(Of course, if you're already using this (doubtful since you said you damaged yours, which I don't think would happen with the above tool) then this won't help)
Looks like he got the same one I got this one I also recommend the Scosche Double DIN kit. It fits perfectly and has CarPlay and a Volume nob for $174.99. I’ve had no issues other than sound, which might be my speakers, or some connection issues with CarPlay where it doesn’t auto launch CarPlay when I start my car with my phone plugged in.

I have a first Gen and got this one & love it! It does get hot AF in summer here in VA though but I still think it's worth the trade off! IIRC they are the same for all the manual tC's but it comes with some other adapters for other sizes.
I'm running the same Fahren low beam set on my '10, as well as the Fahren high beam set and the high beams are IMO RIDICULOUS. I can see objects clearly at ~30-40 yards, and still have light to see well past that. I'll get a pic tomorrow night of them if I'm out. Really happy I made the switch to LED.

Looks like there s only one left in stock.. Not sold as a set of two
head unit This is the one I used. It is a little bit smaller than the original head unit but I also got these. Dash kit They fill in the space between the head unit and the dash. You will need to sand them down a little and glue or use 3m tape to secure them, but it works and looks great in my opinion.
Encase anyone is finding this later I ended up getting this one with a Scosche Double DIN kit and it fits perfectly and has CarPlay and a Volume nob for $174.99 with so far no issues after a week.
This is the same brand with a 10 inch display. My friend has it in his 2017 Brz and it looks very nice the only complaint is that it sticks out a little bit from the actual trim. I didn't get it because I wanted to have a factory+ look to it.
I personally bought one of the universal ones from Amazon and have had no issues. I think it looks pretty good and fits the factory format pretty well. The only thing I could complain about is due to the odd length of the factory radio there was originally some space between the radio and the trim. To fix this issue I bought some cheep spacers from Amazon as well. Other than that it works great and looks even better. universal aftermarket head unit
Im Canadian so idk if the link will work if you’re from the US, I had to buy the 3 pedal set and the foot rest separately. They were a bitch to install because of how awkward it is to work down there and the break pedal has this weird bend so it makes putting the cover on harder, but it is possible.

Hey! Happy to hear you're upgrading your headunit! I've been using a DMCPA79BT unit off of Amazon for the past 6 months in two different cars, and now my tC. It has a few bugs (sometimes when you end a call with someone, it will freeze and reboot in about 2 minutes), but overall it is a fantastic unit for under 300 bucks. For your tC, you will need a wiring harness adapter. Go on Amazon. I found mine for 5 bucks. It's essentially an adapter that plugs directly to the factory clips. You'll then have a bunch of wires coming out of that adapter, and a bunch of wires coming out of the headunit. You'll essentially just match up the colors and connect them. Make sure you double check the wiring diagrams though. If you have a factory subwoofer, and you would like to retain it, take the power antenna wire from the factory side and connect it to the remote turn on wire from your new fancy head unit. I have a 2005 ajd that worked for me, it should work for you. I've had fantastic success with this headunit and despite its few glitches every now and then, if you're on a budget, this is the way to go. On my 2013 the rear has notches on the piston so a brake caliper tool can twist the piston down.
My first idea was the replace the cigarette lighter with this setup but I didn’t want loose cables or have my phone out in the open, then I remembered about the extra 12v in the center cubby.
This is what I used and I bought the 3ft one. It’s just enough length to make it to the head unit when you go straight past the shifter, under the little cubby under the AC controls then straight up behind to the radio/head unit.
Also, the harness(adapter) that someone linked to you below is NOT the one for your tC, it’s for the 14 and 15 tC since they both use the same stereo and is different from the one that is used on the 16s stereo, use this harness

No, not with stock rims, you need something like these hub centric and keeps the 5x4.5(114.3) studs. You are using Amazon, you can set vehicle filters so that it is only for 2014 tCs
I was considering that although I’m not sure If I want to deal with that if I ever need to remove it again haha. I bought some weather stripping on Amazon and basically stuck it to the bottom of that panel so it doesn’t rub against plastic. Here’s the link to the product I used.

I just skimmed through this so I probably missed the explanations, but wouldn't closed-cell-foam insulation work a lot better than the (forgot the name) puffy-cloth-type stuff?

But damn i didn't know the 8.0rs has the exhaust in the middle of the car, thats kinda cool, but i could see how it could be frustrating finding one for it. Oh it comes out the left drivers side, i love the fact no welding was involved , just a simple bolt on.
i replaced both of mine on my 05. they're like $40 shipped on ebay and amazon. you need to buy a pry kit like this to pop it off and then it slides right in.
I got this one on Amazon. Bought my 15 used and it came without the cover. This one has been pretty good so far - never an issue with the rod - it's a mesh cloth, but you can't see through it.
Look into R1 Concepts. I've had their budget (named ELINE) rotors with the basic zinc coating, GEOMET coated rotors, and ceramic pads on my tC2 and they've done great. Not a lot of performance gain, but I put the Injen short ram intake on my 2012. It gives it a louder low grunt and it makes a hissing sound as you accelerate. For the window thing its probably a regulator which is a hard task for non mechanically inclined people so Id as for a quote. Lastly, for the trunk which is common, they sell replacement ones online like this: For 05-10 Scion Tc Rear Hatch Handle Trunk Tailgate Lid Racing Carbon Fiber Look B3721B 05 06 07 08 09 10 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DX9RZZM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FstVEbMDP998Q
One thing I’m doing on my 08 right now is sound proofing the cabin using these sound deadening mats to help with the loud cabin noise on the freeway. LED headlights, tinted windows, and interior led strip lights are a good way to start off too. I wouldn’t do any performance upgrades unless you can really work some magic. Borla axleback gives it a nice low grumble if you’re looking for that, although it is around $500. A great set of tires goes a long ways too and a strut bar if you’re gonna be taking sharp corners!
tC looks really nice after clay bar and wax:)
maybe something like this then? It's not bad for the price. Looks about $75.00 right now.
Otherwise have everyone pack a legit duffel bag. I bet four of those suckers would fit pretty easily in the trunk.
Still think you should pack light though.
Thanks for sharing a the product!
Looks like the same store offers the same product for slightly cheap off Amazon

I havne't done this yet, my vehicle already has aftermarket unit but no steering controls. Also mine is stick and the parking brake was never connected, so I am missing a ton of features on my display as the car has to be recognized as being in park to be used (dvd functionality, setting images as background, changing display brightness settings). I was not the one to get the radio installed, it was in when I purchased the vehicle, but I have been looking in to taking care of all of this. I have a friend that has been working in the car audio installation business for about 20 years, and recommends this one: https://www.amazon.com/Maestro-ADS-MSW-Universal-Steering-Interface/dp/B00J4W10XG/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=maestro%20SW&qid=1552594690&s=gateway&sr=8-1&fbclid=IwAR10rJLYoizEYTevnbPtK1qb6QVcjS0EJVFsSq78xBxfvLuMJnE-m_LnHI4 . Apparently you can set custom controls as well, double tap a button, long hold a button, etc. I will most likely be purchasing this one.

It's definitely not the best at the job, but it does what I need it to
You are just removing the plastic. There are 3 screws to remove. 2 behind the silver handle and one behind the black plate in the door handle. Then pop up the lock/window trim and unplug them. From there there’s the speaker to unplug. I couldn’t get it so I just left it attached. Didn’t make a difference. Then you peel back the moisture barrier. Go slow, you need to reuse it. From there- use a torx screw to remove the 3 screws on the side of door, holding the actuator in. Then pop out the rods. This part was tough..remember where they go too! You also have to loosen the window bolt to actually get it out. I took the whole thing out and had to reset the window track. Not too hard honestly just something extra. After that, replace all the rods into the new actuator (there are 3) and put it back.

if you happen to find it or if you get a new one from a locksmith you can make a second key for only about $25. order this key from amazon, have it cut for $5 and then follow these instructions to program it.

the aftermarket ones have a lot of bad reviews that they stop working after a year. i'm just going to get the oem one which is ~$100.

I use the other one that uses a 3m tape to mount. Works great.
Ah yeah, they probably sent you H11 bulbs, which is what the OEM is but the bulbs in those SpecD’s are H7 bulbs.
Try this, however try it at you’re own risk. A lot of these adapters are kinda cheaply made.
Edit: wait, that adapter might not work. It has H11 female and not male.
I bought them about a year ago but I'll check Edit: I found it on Amazon here. They have other colors besides black as well.
I found this, is it possible to ask for prepainted?
Sorry for the late reply!
Here's the best guide I found, although it still doesn't provide enough detail to finish the job when you do your wiring.
What this guide is missing is you have to pop off the the plastic piece that lies around the trunk latch, and run the wires through a small hole through the bumper up into the small tube that runs the lights from the driver's side to the passenger's side. You will have to cut the plastic tubing that cases the wires and use wire nuts to splice the cables into new connections. Wire colors vary by year and other things, so figure them out by unplugging certain sockets.
This will charge super slowly with most phones, some it won't work at all. I have tried using it when a phone is completely drained, and it wouldn't do a thing.
That port is really for plugging in a USB flash drive.
I use these Anker chargers for Pixels, ipads, and a G7 and a Samsung Edge and it says "CHARGING RAPIDLY" with all of them Amazon Link
